SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego will light up landmarks this week in honor of the 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement.San Diego's convention center Sails Pavilion and Balboa Park's California Tower will be illuminated in purple and gold to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment starting Monday until Friday."This week San Diego will be illuminated in colorful lights to celebrate the single largest expansion of voting rights in American history," Mayor Kevin L. Amid the rollout of coronavirus shots, their focus is now to prevent people from buying vaccines advertised as the real thing.Dr. Timothy Mackey, an associate professor of Anesthesiology and Global Public Health at UC San Diego, said scammers are taking advantage of consumers seeking COVID-19 vaccines because there's a need, but not enough supply."We first saw herbal and nutritional supplements because people were trying to avoid the disease, then a bunch of testing kits we saw when people didn't have access to testing kits,” said Mackey.And now, he said people browsing the web will see advertisements promoting fake COVID-19 vaccines."You cannot get any vaccine on the internet. If you're seeing a post that says you can buy it right away, it's not the real vaccine,” said Mackey.He said falling into a trap could cause serious harm to yourself and others."Middle ground you get sterilized water, and it doesn't work. Then, you go out and risk transmission to others,” Mackey said.Secondly, he said you'd get ripped off and risk having your credit card information and identity stolen. And third, "You get a product that's spoiled or a needle not sterile, and you get another disease or something that's toxic for your body."Mackey said the bottom line is the vaccine will not be available online anytime soon."The vaccine will only be available in registered healthcare facilities and only a few that are specifically validated to distribute the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, San Diego County reported a record 1,478 new coronavirus cases and six additional deaths, bringing the county's totals to 70,709 cases and 966 fatalities.Saturday's new cases yielded a 7% positivity rate out of 21,947 tests reported. The new daily case report marks the third time in a week that the county has reported more than 1,000 new cases. It was also the 11th-straight day the county reported at least 600 new cases.Eleven new community outbreaks were also confirmed on Friday: Three in business settings, three in faith-based settings, two in childcare settings, one in a TK-12 school setting, one in a restaurant/bar setting, and one in a gym setting. A community outbreak is three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the last two weeks.County businesses saw purple tier restrictions go into effect on Saturday, further limiting reopening of the county due to the surge in coronavirus cases seen over the last couple of weeks.California's limited stay-at-home order is also set to begin Saturday night, limiting non-essential businesses between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for one month in counties under the state's purple tier.County public health officials are worried that fatigue is setting in on San Diegans and urged residents to avoid large gatherings this week for Thanksgiving,"The virus is widespread and every element of our community is impacted," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Now more than ever it is vital that San Diegans avoid gatherings and crowds, wear a face covering when they are out in public and stay home if they are sick."Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 continues to rise as well, with 440 hospitalized and 127 in intensive care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some professors at the University of San Diego are using the impeachment inquiry public hearings as a teaching tool.Instead of listening to their professor lecture about constitutional law, students at USD watched history unfold.Sophomore Bryson Patterson says, “Although we are studying war powers now that this has come up, we get to see the constitution in action. So, we get to live it, going on which is pretty cool.”Casey Dominguez, a Political Science Professor, is allowing students to watch the impeachment inquiry hearings during class as part of today’s lesson plan, hoping to help them understand what’s happening.Dominguez adds she hopes her students, “walk away from our class feeling they are competent to figure out what’s going on. And come up with informed opinions about it.”A lesson some of her students say has already left a lasting impression on them. Charlie Young, a Junior adds, “it’s the perfect opportunity to happen in college. These Angels of the Jungle built a hospital and treated these fragile refugees.There are angels out in force every spring at the Embarcadero Marina Park North. The Celebration of Champions honors the doctors and nurses at Rady Children's Hospital and raises the spirits of hundreds of children and their families fighting to live healthy, happy lives. Sports figures and media types running with these champions and honoring those tearfully paying homage to the ones who've passed. It's an emotional day.4th of July is a blast! Snow Summit was a bit colder but a fabulous time as well.Finally we remember a little Lakeside girl: an Angel in Heaven, Hero on Earth, Forever in our Hearts. Kiera Larsen was ten years old when the family SUV began rolling down the driveway toward her playmates. She ran over and pushed two younger friends to safety but was crushed to death herself. Kiera was recognized with a Carnegie Hero medal and a personal letter from then President Barack Obama. We celebrate Kiera. 2918
