BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's police departments will launch a 30-day campaign starting Wednesday to hunt down fugitives who are suspected of having committed a crime known as fake invoice fraud.The campaign will have a code name known as "spring thunder", said Liu Jinguo, Vice Minister of Public Security.While addressing a teleconference Monday, the vice minister said: "As the Spring Festival is drawing near, the demand for fake invoices remains strong. Perpetrators will get on the move."Statistics show that the police across the country uncovered 237 cases involving fake invoice fraud and detained 234 suspects in January. They also destroyed eight large sites making and selling fake invoices, and confiscated more than 12 million fake invoices in the past month.Fake invoice vendors are common in Chinese cities, where they offer receipts used for tax purposes. Such invoices could cause huge losses in tax revenues and could feed illegal activities, such as smuggling, money laundering and corruption.The Spring Festival, or the New Year's Day on the Chinese lunar calendar, will fall Sunday. It is an occasion for reunions of relatives and friends, completed with much fun and plenty of eatings. Spring Festival is the most important event for people of Chinese origin.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. That has been an inconvenience for those investing, buying housing, and doing banking business on the mainland.According to a statement released Friday by the ministry, Hong Kong and Macao residents entered a peak period for mainland card renewals last year.Cards for those aged 18 and above are valid for ten years. Cards for those under 18 years last three years.The mainland entry cards began to be used on Jan. 15, 1999.
