NEW YORK (AP) — This year’s Black Friday was the biggest ever for online sales, as fewer people hit the stores and shoppers rang up .4 billion in transactions from their phones, computers and tablets. That’s just behind the .9 billion haul of last year’s Cyber Monday, which holds the one-day record for online sales, according to Adobe Analytics. Adobe measures sales at 80 of the top 100 U.S. online retailers.Adobe expects online sales to jump to another record this Cyber Monday with an estimated total of .4 billion. Much of the shopping is happening on people’s phones, which accounted for 39% of all online sales Friday and 61% of online traffic.Shoppers have been looking for “Frozen 2” toys in particular. Other top purchases included sports video games and Apple laptops. All the online shopping may have helped thin the crowd at malls on Black Friday.Traffic at stores fell 2.1% on Black Friday from a year ago, according to preliminary figures from RetailNext. It tracks in-store activity at tens of thousands of locations, including specialty apparel retailers, big-box stores and mall-based stores. The drop in traffic helped lead to a 1.6% dip in sales.Online and in-store shopping aren’t always completely separate, though. Many people buy things online, only to head to the store to pick them up. Such sales surged 43.2% on Black Friday from a year ago, according to Adobe. This holiday shopping season may be the most harried in years because it’s the shortest since 2013. Thanksgiving this year fell on the last Thursday in November — the latest possible date it could be.Much is riding on the success of the holiday season’s sales. The U.S. economy is still growing steadily, but gains have slowed since its sizzling start to the year. Economists say strong spending by households is helping to bolster growth and make up for weak confidence among businesses given all the uncertainties about the U.S.-China trade war and other factors. 1967

Nearly two dozen schools in metro Detroit were closed on Thursday due to threats. Detroit Police Chief James Craig said since the Florida school shooting on Feb. 14, DPD received a total of 40 threats, consisting of two bombing threats, 34 shooting threats, and two bombing and shooting threats. At one of the targeted schools, John R. King Academy, class was already in session when the bomb squad arrived at the school on the report of a suspicious package. The kids were dismissed for the day after it was found to be safe.Anyone arrested could potentially face charges of terrorism and making threats online. If convicted, those charges carry a 20-year penalty.Craig said in the last 24 hours, DPD has received 23 threats. Three juveniles and one adult have already been arrested for numerous threats. Craig says more people will be in custody soon."It's going to end," he said. "We know that these types of threats create significant fear." The chief also says any parent found covering for their child could also face charges. 1054

NORFOLK, Va. - The first presidential debate of 2020 was all some voters needed to watch before heading to the polls.“[I] tuned into most of the debate last night, and that really solidified my decision to vote today,” said William Jimenez. But the thought of this year’s election is nerve-wracking for some voters.“Regardless of political persuasion and who you intend to vote for, people across the political spectrum are all experiencing that kind of stress,” said Gary Roftus, the director of Fairfield Psychological Associates.Jimenez says this election is important.“A lot is on the line. A lot is at stake,” he adds.Election stress - according to the American Psychological Association, it’s affecting more than 50% of Americans.Gabrielle Harrell felt the pressure at the polls Wednesday.“It’s been very stressful. As I was filling out the ballot, I was triple-checking to make sure I’m checking the right box,” Harrell said.Roftus says people are already stressed with the coronavirus.“We’ve never had an election where we are told is the most important election ever in the middle of a pandemic,” he adds.As we get closer to November 3, Roftus says politics comes up in his counseling sessions.“Inadvertently or directly because it's bothering them, people are bringing up the election all the time,” he adds.Roftus says the additional voting options are affecting stress levels.“Sometimes some people are uncertain as to where they should vote, whether they should vote by mail, is their ballot going to be accepted?"For people who want to get rid of some of that election stress, voting early is an option.Roftus says it gives some people some comfort and relief. Some voters agree.“I do feel better having done it,” Harrell adds.Experts say it’s also best to take a break from politics if you can, but most importantly, take care of yourself.“Try to get enough rest and eat properly,” said Roftus. This story was first reported by Nana-Séntuo Bonsu at WTKR Norfolk, Virginia. 1993

NEW YORK (AP) — If you were to choose a word that rose above most in 2020, which word would it be? Ding, ding, ding: Merriam-Webster on Monday announced “pandemic” as its 2020 word of the year.Merriam-Webster's editor at large, Peter Sokolowski, tells The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement that pandemic rose to the top in March. That's when the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus crisis a pandemic.Interest in the word on the company's website, Merriam-Webster.com, has been high through the year.Among the runners up for word of the year: kraken, mamba and defund.President-elect Joe Biden's fondness for the word malarkey lifted the word to runner up status as well. 712

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un responded to President Donald Trump's speech before the United Nations where Trump vowed to "totally destroy" the nation if it threatened the United States or its allies. Although the two nations are not formally at war, clearly the two leaders are in a war of words. "The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime," Trump said earlier this week. Kim issued a statement Thursday evening, not backing down to Trump's hard-line stance."I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the US pay dearly for his speech calling for totally destroying the DPRK," Kim said. "Whatever Trump might have expected, he will face results beyond expected." "He is unfit to hold the prerogative of supreme command of a country and he is surely a rogue and a gangster fond of playing with fire rather than a politician," Kim added. Both sides have stepped up their posture toward one another. North Korea has fired missiles over the coast of Japan, and has tested atomic weapons. Meanwhile, the United States has added patrols of the region.  1299
