BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam. 

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government Monday strongly condemned the hostage-taking of Chinese tourists by a former police officer in Manila and demanded the Philippine government thoroughly investigate the incident. A bus with 21 Hong Kong tourists aboard was hijacked in the Philippine capital of Manila Monday morning. After negotiations, six hostages were freed. On Monday night, Philippine police launched a rescue operation and a number of hostages were killed and injured.In a press release, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had telephoned his Philippine counterpart Alberto Romulo on the hostage-taking incident.During the conversation, Yang said the Chinese government had been highly concerned over the incident and had asked the Philippine government to spare no efforts in carrying out the rescue operation under the prerequisite of guaranteeing the safety of hostages.Yang said that the Chinese government was shocked about the incident, deplored the slaying of Hong Kong tourists, and strongly condemned the brutality against innocent tourists.The Chinese government demands the Philippine government launch a thorough investigation into the incident and inform the Chinese side of related details as soon as possible, he said.The Chinese government also demands the Philippine government do all it can to save the injured hostages and properly handle the remaining problems of the incident, Yang said.

Journalistic activities by news organizations and their reporters are protected by law," read a statement posted on the GAPP's website.The statement came after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter of the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.Qiu had previously been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company with fabricated stories.However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.Police officials said earlier Friday that the investigation into allegations of defamation against Qiu and his newspaper would continue.
