He said joining the Navy is essentially in his blood after his dad and uncles came to the United States from the Philippines, joining the Navy and raising him in a structured military way.“He just exposed me to a lot of aviation growing up, so going to the Miramar Air Show pretty much almost every year was one of them and just being in San Diego you have an airplane flying over you every three minutes, so I always looked up and said okay, I want to do that,” said Velunta.He said he wanted to take his goals one step further.“I wanted to raise the bar and be the first commissioned officer in the family,” said Velunta.So, he did. Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, he graduated from Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island. He had to complete 13 weeks of both physical and mental training. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The DMV is apologizing for long wait times as they work through a new queuing system and problems with the REAL ID.Wait times (without an appointment) used to be under two hours, now they're closer to 4-5 hours. The DMV issued this statement to 10News:The issue is employees have to manually enter the ID number given to each customer, since a new system went online two weeks ago. The ID number consists of your initials and the last four digits of your phone number.The process prior was completely automatic.The other issue relates to the REAL ID. Employees are taking more time to explain to customers what they need to have in order to get the ID. It's a saying at the heart of a new experiment called itsblackandwhite.us.Ryan Berman, along with Ahab Nimry and several other marketing and advertising agency representatives say they wanted to figure out how to start a constructive conversation about things like race, implicit bias and equity."For one, getting perspective and understanding a bias you might have because you can't do anything about it if you can't spot it," said Berman.So they came up with a 10 question, online survey that asks things like, "Do you believe hard work puts you on your path for a promotion?Do you have a close friend that is black?""We're not trying to nudge you one way or the other, we're just trying to say hey pick a side lets start talking and work this out," explained Nimry.At the end, you get to see how other people responded and access links to learn more, donate to civil rights organizations, even register to vote.The creators say the idea is to share what they learn and then take all that data and develop a sort of "seal of approval" for consumers to know how different companies stack up."Launching almost a diversity/inclusion certification for organizations," said Berman. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As protesters gather across the country to spread the message that black lives matter and there is a problem of police brutality against black people, not everyone is ready to join in the marches, but there are other ways to help the combat racism. “To make change, to build a movement, it takes all sorts of action. Everyone doesn’t need to go in the streets,” said Dayo Gore, UCSD Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. While many have said they want change both verbally and through social media, she said people of color want that support to be taken to the next level. “This is not enough, your apology is not enough, feeling sorry is not enough, feeling my pain is not enough, I need some actual real change,” she said. To get that real change, people can use their voting powers to elect officials who will be an advocate, which is a point President Obama made in a publication addressing how people can make a difference in combating racism. He also noted that when making demands for officials, be specific with what you’re asking so it’s harder to ignore. Gore emphasized that point, citing specific examples of room for change in the San Diego community. She suggested a community review board that’s independent of the police department to review activity and oversee actions taken by police. She also said funding within the police department could be reevaluated. “Funding other things that will make communities more viable and able to survive, instead of simply policing communities,” said Gore. She also said in order to help get rid of racism, it’s important to first acknowledge there is an issue and educate yourself. “It starts with understanding what the problem is, and then figuring out where you best can raise your voice,” she said. She said another active step to take is speaking up among peers if someone says something racist, even if it’s uncomfortable. “When you’re hanging out with friends, do you say something when people say things racist or make assumptions based off the color of their skin?” she questioned. Gore also suggested people find groups in the community to both follow and support financially. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Patients were reunited with the men and women who care for them on Saturday at The Heart Institute at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The event marked the 34th annual Heart Party. Hundreds of young heart patients and their families showed up for games, gifts and fun. Upstairs, doctors and nurses were caring for a couple newborns who had received heart transplants. For one baby to receive a heart, another has to give it. At just four months old, Zoey has taken part in the Lifesharing program.  553
