Moderator Kristen Welker, with the help of an offstage mute button, helped give Americans a substantive head-to-head debate over leadership that had been missing during the presidential campaign. The NBC News White House correspondent, in her first time moderating a general election debate, kept tight control of the discussion between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden. Trump, possibly deterred by the mute button, resisted the interruptions that led to criticism of his performance in the first debate. Welker guided the candidates through discussions about the coronavirus, climate change, health care and race in America. While Thursday marked Welker's first time moderating a debate between two nominees, she was among a panel of NBC News moderators who led a Democratic debate last year. Welker earned praise from her colleagues both at NBC News and the White House Press Corps. 905

NASA has lost priceless relics of space history, largely because of poor record keeping and follow-through, the agency's watchdog concluded. The inspector general recently found "NASA does not have adequate processes in place to identify or manage its heritage assets."That has led NASA to lose track of items that flew in space, such as "an Apollo 11 lunar collection bag that contained lunar dust particles," and other historically significant items, like a prototype lunar rover that was sold to a scrap yard.NASA told the inspector general's office in a memo that it would develop better processes for dealing with historical items by the spring of May 2020. The agency did not immediately respond to CNN for comment. The rover turned up "in a residential neighborhood in Alabama" and was spotted by an Air Force historian. When contacted by the government, the owner "expressed interest in returning the vehicle to NASA."But the agency lost track of the vehicle because it did not follow through."After waiting more than 4 months for a decision from the Agency, the individual sold the rover to a scrap metal company," the inspector general found. "NASA officials subsequently offered to buy the rover, but the scrap yard owner refused and, realizing its historical value, sold the vehicle at auction for an undisclosed sum."In another instance, NASA lost track of a bag containing moon material, which was eventually sold for .8 million. The "Apollo 11 lunar collection bag" was "seized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation from the home of a former chief executive officer for the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center during a criminal investigation," the IG found, then sold at a Marshals Service auction. NASA learned of the bag in 2015 when the purchaser asked the agency to verify its authenticity, but a judge turned down NASA's request to take possession of the bag, and the unnamed individual auctioned it off.As the Space Shuttle program wound down, NASA improved its processes for keeping track of historical artifacts, the report said. But that has not helped the agency recover items dating to the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions of the 1960s and 1970s.Items from that era, the report said, have shown up in online auctions because "NASA freely gave property as gifts to astronauts and other employees and contractors." 2360

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — After Edmund Zagorski was electrocuted by the state this week as it carried out his death sentence, could we see more electric chair executions in Tennessee going forward? One Nashville attorney who helped craft the state's death penalty laws says yes.Nashville Attorney David Raybin says he thinks more inmates who committed their crimes prior to 1999 may shy away from lethal injection, given the debate over whether the chemicals used in lethal injection may torture inmates to death."In the future, I think more inmates who are eligible for the electric chair will elect to use it," Raybin said.Raybin says he understands that emotion from people who think that convicted murderers should suffer... but he says that would make the state no better than the criminals. 810

Natalie Portman has decided against traveling to Jerusalem to receive the Genesis Prize, the foundation behind the award announced. The Genesis Prize Foundation said Thursday that a representative for the actress informed the organization that "recent events in Israel have been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel" and that "she cannot in good conscience move forward with the ceremony."Dubbed "the Jewish Nobel," the Genesis Prize "honors extraordinary individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews through their outstanding professional achievement and commitment to the Jewish people and Jewish values, such as social justice, tolerance and charity."Portman, who was born in Jerusalem, was named the 2018 Genesis Prize laureate in November. The honor includes a prize of million. Past recipients have included former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and actor Michael Douglas.Foundation officials said the Oscar-winning actress had committed to regift "to philanthropic programs focused on advancing women's equality in all aspects of human endeavor."Portman starred in and directed "A Tale of Love and Darkness," a Hebrew-language film shot in Israel and based on a novel by Israeli writer Amos Oz, in 2015.She is well-known for her social activism on gender equality and poverty issues."I am deeply touched and humbled by this honor," Portman said in a statement in November. "I am proud of my Israeli roots and Jewish heritage; they are crucial parts of who I am. It is such a privilege to be counted among the outstanding Laureates whom I admire so much."Originally set for June 28, the prize ceremony has been canceled. It was to honor nongovernmental organizations working on women's equality and empowerment issues."We extend our apologies to everyone who has been affected by this decision, particularly to the hundreds of international guests who made plans to fly to Jerusalem to honor Ms. Portman and celebrate the contribution of Jewish women to humanity, the main theme of this year's ceremony," foundation officials said in a statement. "The Genesis Prize Foundation remains committed to making grants to advance the cause of women's equality."CNN has reached out to reps for Portman for comment.  2327

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One of four former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd is asking to have his case dismissed. An attorney for Thomas Lane said in court papers that the case against his client should be dismissed for lack of probable cause. As part of his court filing, attorney Earl Gray filed transcripts from body camera footage recorded by Lane's camera and the camera of his partner. The transcripts, obtained by the Star Tribune and New York Times, show that Floyd begged officers not to shoot him during the initial encounter and later pleaded for them not to place him in the back of the squad car because he was claustrophobic and had just had COVID-19.At one point, Floyd said “I can’t believe this. I can’t believe this. Mom, I love you. Tell my kids I love them. I’m dead,” according to the transcripts. The transcripts say former officer Derek Chauvin then told Floyd he was under arrest and that he was “doing a lot of talking, man.”That’s when Gray says Lane asked twice if the officers should turn Floyd on his side, but Chauvin said no and used his knee to pin Floyd to the ground.Chauvin then knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes, which was caught on video and has now been seen by people across the world. Floyd lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead.Gray also filed a transcript of Lane's interview with state investigators.Lane is charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter, as are former officers J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao. Chauvin is charged with murder and manslaughter. 1582
