SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There is a new effort to bring more customers to restaurants struggling in downtown San Diego due to the coronavirus pandemic.Beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, 700 discounted gift cards will go on sale for 40 downtown restaurants, stores, and coffee shops. Patrons can pay for the card but will get a value in what will be called the "Downtown Loyalty" program. The extra per card is being added by the City Center Business District and local philanthropic groups.Sarah Brothers with the Downtown San Diego Partnership said this will help make up some of the restaurants lost revenue. "The sale of the gift cards would bring in close to ,000 which is badly needed," Brothers said. Some of the businesses participating in the program include Blue Bottle Coffee, Cowboy Star, Fogo de Chao, Searsucker, Tajima, and barleymash. For more information on how to purchase the gift cards can be found on the Downtown Loyalty program's website Downtown Loyalty Program. 995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego City Council Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of adding movable tiny homes to the list of options on how to offer more affordable housing to citizens.Tiny houses are similar to granny flats, but smaller. Tiny houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are equipped with the basics for living, sleeping, and cooking. They range in size from 150 square feet to 400 square feet and cost between ,000 and 0,000.Tiny homes can help create an affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.City officials said, “A significant portion of households in San Diego can afford a movable tiny house as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The average cost of rent for a tiny home is 0 a month. A property owner would recover their initial investment in eight years. After that, the rent from the tiny house could help cover their mortgage and other expenses.”Currently, the city allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. With Tuesday’s approval, homeowners can add tiny homes to their properties.“Moveable tiny homes are a great option that naturally increases affordable housing at no cost to taxpayers. It’s a win for the homeowner, it’s a win for the renter, and it’s a win for the taxpayer,” said San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman. “I appreciate my colleagues support for this important housing reform. We must continue pushing for common sense solutions that result in naturally occurring affordable housing.”Sherman has been working to approve the ordinance since 2018, the city said. 1607

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This holiday season, shopping local is what will keep San Diego small businesses alive. The US Census conducted a small business survey showing a third of San Diego businesses were negatively impacted by the pandemic. The effect is visible downtown."The pandemic has definitely taken a toll on the neighborhood, I mean we've had some closures," Gaslamp Quarter Executive Director Association Michael Trimble said.Trimble said four to eight restaurants closed since March in the Gaslamp Quarter alone."Not a large percentage but still any business lost is unfortunately a business that we mourn is not here," he said. While the holiday sale signs are out, the usual crowds brought in with conventions and tourism are nowhere to be seen.Trimble said locals are vital to keeping retail and restaurants alive this holiday season."Watching all these small businesses shut down or close forever during the pandemic, it's just been really sad. So, I don't have a ton of money but Amazon doesn't need my money. You know what I mean? Like, if I can help these little shops with my or my that's just a much better use of my time," Pacific Beach Resident Bree Steffen said. When the pandemic started Steffen pledged to only shop small. She deleted her Amazon app and started exploring her neighborhood, "I feel like this whole underworld of San Diego opened up for me once I started looking at the smaller shops."She said it was a more personal experience, where she found unique gifts that had more emotional value from being hand-crafted.She launched her own small photography business in October. Now she relies on people like her to change their habits and think small."I feel like each time I at least give them a little business it just gives them a little more hope to keep going on and it's like if 100 people give them then that's enough for them to try to weather this storm," she said hopeful it will end soon.Trimble said on November 28th, also known as Small Business Saturday, if you take a picture while shopping or in the area and tag @GaslampQuarter on Instagram you will be entered to win a gift card from local establishments.Trimble said there has been one silver lining of the pandemic and that was testing the outdoor dining concept on Fifth Avenue out of necessity. That paved the way for a long coveted project to turn Fifth Avenue into a promenade. This project received approval from City Council, according to Trimble, and a timeline will be announced in early 2021. 2516

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The owner of Waypoint Public in North Park has found a way to help his business rebound from the Coronavirus Pandemic, while also assisting other businesses to do the same.John Pani invited Dang Brothers Pizza to set up a shop inside his restaurant."I've got a 5,000 square foot restaurant," says Pani. "Doing what we were doing at Waypoint, we could have done that in a 500 square foot restaurant."Pani closed Waypoint in mid-March before County Health Officials imposed a stay at home order. During the closure, he worried about his 130 employees and wanted to find a way to put them back to work.Pani decided to reopen with a limited menu of take-out items that his chefs could prepare. Then in June, he asked a friend who runs Dang Brothers to join him."They're mostly catering and special events. They don't have a brick and mortar shop," Pani says. "I told him, 'Hey man, come set your tent up.' So we craned in a little pizza oven onto our patio and got going."Pani says the response has been fantastic. Now he wants to invite other vendors to set up in his restaurant. He thinks it could create a street-market style environment that will give people a reason to come back to North Park."We have to find a new normal," Pani says. "I don't think we're going to be packing in restaurants any time soon. At least, I personally hope we aren't..."So we have to find a way to hopefully keep businesses alive and still provide the interaction and the hospitality and the food and beverage that people want and need. And we have to do it in a way that is appropriate given the times." 1610
