Scott Thompson never thought making other people smile would be so much fun.“I never thought it would be awesome for myself too. You know, I didn’t know that I would be as happy it as I am," Thompson said.But it’s never too late for an old farmer to learn a new trick.“We started out with a small field, about three or four acres,” he said. Scott and his wife own Thompson Strawberry Farm in Wisconsin, normally a pick-it-yourself berry farm. But because of COVID-19, they decided to plant a field of sunflowers so people could come get out of the house, enjoy the sunflower fields and smile.“People are going to need a release. People are going to need a place to go and we’re just fortunate that we have that opportunity to give it to somebody,” said Thompson.But one field turned into another.“Then we put in three or four more fields,” said Thompson.Turned into 2.2 million sunflowers.“It just kind of added up and kept going and kept going so I just kept planting,” said Thompson.The sunflowers are helping people get out of the house during the pandemic“We just wanted some sunshine in corona, it’s an easy activity to do that’s not in doors,” said Kate Kronstein, who was visiting the field with her mom. “Road trip. Can’t do anything else these days!” said John Poquette, up from Chicago.People have been coming from mostly Illinois, but all over the Midwest to come snip some sunflowers and take a bright bouquet from the farm.It’s per car to get in, and that comes with a dozen pick-em-yourself sunflowers. But Scott says you can do more than just pick sunflowers while you’re here.“Everybody just seems like they have their little niche of what they want to do. I bet we’ve had five or six different proposals, we’ve had wedding photographers, we’ve had senior pictures, family pictures, so we’re really just trying to spread that fun for everyone,” said Thompson.And when you leave, they want you to take two things with you: some sunflowers and a smile.“It made me happy, and it just gave me a reminder that there’s still sunshine out there, even with everything going on,” said Kronstein smiling as she got ready to leave. 2149

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Two people are dead and multiple others are injured following a church stabbing in San Jose, California late Sunday.Police say the stabbing happened at Grace Baptist Church. It is unclear exactly how many people were wounded.Police say there is no confirmation of an arrest after Mayor Sam Liccardo said on Twitter that a suspect had been captured, but later deleted the tweet.Bay Area TV station KTVU also reported that a 22-year-old man was apprehended.Police say no services were taking place at the time of the stabbing, but that homeless people had been brought to the church to take shelter from the cold. 644

SANTA ANA, Calif. (CNS) - The Orange County Board of Education announced Wednesday that it has decided -- by a 4-0 vote -- to file a lawsuit against Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Public Health Officer to seek a court order that sets aside the state orders preventing public schools from holding in-person classes and resuming services on campus.The vote came during a closed session Tuesday night, according to a statement.The California Supreme Court has interpreted the California Constitution to require that California school children have a constitutional right to substantially equal opportunities for learning, and the governor's order will unequally burden the most underprivileged families of California, the bard's lawyers said in a statement.The attorneys, Tyler & Bursch, LLP, of Murrieta in Riverside County, said they agreed to represent the board pro bono "to protect the vulnerable children in California."The lawsuit will also be supported by the nonprofit legal organization, Advocates for Faith & Freedom."California children have a constitutional right to both an education and equal protection under the law. The governor denied them these rights and did so without adequately considering the disparate impact these restrictions would have on the disadvantaged," said attorney Jennifer Bursch of Tyler & Bursch, LLP. "We brought this lawsuit to protect the single mom and her children, children whose parents do not read or write English, and children with special needs."The governor's ban on in-person learning will cause tens of thousands of kids to fall through the cracks and, in many cases, will be harmed for life."The Orange County Board of Education earlier this month approved a non-binding recommendation for reopening schools that would not require physical distancing or wearing masks. SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home.The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house.One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation.The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

Saipov allegedly drove a rented truck onto a well-trafficked bike path just blocks from the World Trade Center on Tuesday afternoon.Eight people were killed and more than a dozen injured as the driver carved a path of destruction through several blocks of Lower Manhattan. Saipov crashed the rented truck into a school bus, left the vehicle brandishing imitation firearms and was shot by police, officials said. He survived and was taken into custody, police said.In carrying out the attack, Saipov relied on the playbook laid out by ISIS in recent years, officials said.
