SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The young woman severely injured in a parasailing accident in Mexico is walking and surfing a year later.Katie Malone's recovery has been a long road. "I survived something I shouldn't have survived," she said.Malone was in Puerto Vallarta in June, 2018 for her birthday. Her parasailing ride turned into a nightmare, "I saw the boat capsize and people on the beach run to try and grab the rope to bring me down." She said the the almost half hour she was in the air she worked to keep calm, thinking about her dog Leroy, and what she was going to wear that night. Her family says the rope snapped and she fell in a tailspin. Katie said it was everything she could do to keep from passing out, or getting sick. She said the next thing she remembered was opening her eyes on the ground with emergency crews surrounding her."My heart dropped to my feet," Katie's brother Brendan said.He started calling and coordinating the trip to Mexico to be with his little sister. He talked about being the megaphone for the family, getting the word out through his music community in Nashville, back home in California and setting up the Gofundme online that reached the world.She underwent three surgeries in Mexico and two weeks in, the swelling in her brain hadn't gone down. Katie's mom said doctors doubled her steroid dosage to bring the swelling in the pituitary glad down and it caused a severe reaction.Katie's mom, Sidona, said she was sick all night and that was the moment they all feared she wouldn't pull through. Sidona said the doctor pulled her aside the next day and said, "you don't understand, she could die and she needs to go home now," urging them to Lifeflight her to the U.S.The family overcame huge struggles, from paying cash for the surgeries in Mexico, as Katie was in between insurance, to finding a way to fly her home. Sidona said certain airlines wouldn't fly that far south in Mexican airspace, and medical airlines wouldn't take her without insurance. Their network of friends and family gave them solutions.The final piece came at the last minute, a ,000 anonymous donation to fund her flight home. Her fight to get back to normal just beginning.Katie re-learned how to walk, drive, and surf over the past year, all the while a smile on her face."Instead of that terrible accident taking control of her, she's taken control of that," Brendan said.Katie says positivity, her family and her dog, Leroy, kept her going. She said she used to take Leroy, her support dog, to the hospital to help others and was thankful he was there for her recovery.She advises anyone facing a challenge that your mind is more powerful than your body and positivity will get you through."I'm not 100% back, I'm getting there, I'm back to work, not full time just part time," she said she's focused on getting healthy. She works as a masseuse, making others feel better.Among her challenges, she has a hard time sitting for extended periods of time, and has to adjust her gait and stance.She hopes her story will change regulations in Mexico so this never happens to anyone else. 3112

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego county Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died following what was believed to be a fight at Pala Casino early Saturday morning.According to the department, the man was taken to the hospital by ambulance from the 4700 block of Highway 76. He was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m.After an initial investigation, the department believes he was in a fight with another man in the parking lot of Pala Casino around 6:30 a.m.The department’s homicide unit is investigating, but at this time, no further details or identities of the victim or suspect have been released. 621

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sisu Academy, a free boarding school for at-risk teenage girls, needs help to get the school year started."We are a little cash strapped right now," says school founder Jabez Labret. "We need to get some cash in the door to get over the starting line so we can access those grant dollars coming this fall to keep the program running."Labret says the school has plenty of money lined up in grants and in-kind donations once classes begin, they need some bridge funding until then.He says the school's mission makes it a worthy cause for donations."This is more than just another school," Labret says. "This is truly about changing these girls' lives."The school will enroll 20 girls this fall, all of them from at-risk situations. They hope to add a freshman class each fall and eventually have 350 students."It could be drug or alcohol issues at home, domestic abuse, homelessness," he says. "It could be that mom and dad both work two jobs and are just struggling to be able to keep food on the table."Labret says a boarding school puts the girls in a stable, focused environment that will help them establish a foundation for the future."We don't just teach the academic side," he says. "We teach them social and emotional skills, the entrepreneurial side, we go out into the community and do community service. It gives us a lot of options to get out of the learning environment."One student who will enroll this fall says she's excited about the prospect."Going to school would help me so that I can get my mind off my troubles at home," says Analys Franklin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. They were riding in a helicopter that crashed in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on country's northern border at 8:35 p.m. Sunday (2:35 a.m. ET), Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement posted on its website."A rescue team was dispatched immediately and they arrived at the Central Island at around 11:20 p.m. and located the wreckage at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors," Kenya's aviation chief Gilbert Kibe said.READ: Pilot, 4 Americans killed in helicopter crash in KenyaStaff at Stapper's graphics company near Mission Hills told 10News that they learned Sunday evening the self-made entrepreneur was killed in the accident.
