SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Neighbors are shaken up after a home invasion in University City. “I wouldn’t have expected it because I feel like this area UTC especially is pretty safe,” says neighbor Alana Schnoor. San Diego police got the call early Monday morning, around 1 a.m, from the home in the 5300 block of Toscana Way.Two men wearing masks went inside of an unlocked apartment. One of them pointed a gun at the people inside, while the other grabbed phones and laptops. Police say one of the victims grabbed the gun and fought the robber. The intruder hit the man with the weapon, and both robbers ran out. “It’s a safe area. I just wouldn’t have expected someone with a gun going into an apartment like that,” said neighbor Amy Kaido. Police say the intruders were wearing green jackets with black stripes and black pants. Both men were in their 20’s. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. San Diego (KGTV)- There are no regrets for a San Diego man who risked his life when he stumbled on a wreck in the middle of last week's rainstorm. "If you ask me, I probably would have done it again," says Victor Ruvalcava. On a rainy Wednesday morning, Dec. 4th, Ruvalcava says he saw a car flip over on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley. The young driver was ejected from the car. "I park behind his car, get out to see if he's ok, I asked him hey is there anyone else in the car. He didn't respond," says Ruvalcava. "I look towards the car, and that's when I get hit by the SUV."He was thrown about 100 feet after that SUV slammed into him. Ruvalcava spent days in the hospital with several injuries, which include a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and leg. While in the hospital, he says the young man he stopped to help, and his family came to visit him. He says they were "extremely thankful." CHP says for safety reasons, they don't recommend drivers stopping to help crash victims on a busy freeway. They should call 911. But Ruvalcava says he'd do it all over again. San Diego (KGTV)- Tenants in Oak Park say they soon won't be able to pay their rent if it continues to go up. Some have seen two increases this year, and they're already living on a fixed income. Tenants held a rally Thursday morning and are pushing for a rent control bill to be signed into law. Assembly bill 1482 would put a cap on rent for tenants in apartments and single-family homes. "My sense of security is pretty much gone," says Sara McTimmonds. "We don't know if we're going to be in or out." McTimmonds has been living at the Olive Wood Gardens Apartment complex for 12 years. It's a low-income housing complex for seniors and those who are disabled. McTimmonds says she's already had her rent increased twice. "In February, and then in July my rent was going to go up from 550 to 900."Renters are hoping for rent protection. Assembly Bill 1482 would do just that. The bill would make it illegal for property owners to raise rents more than 7 percent in one year. Not everyone is in favor of the bill. The California Apartment Association and the California Association of Realtors say they state underbuilt housing for so many years, and that's why rent is so high. "The five percent, plus the CPI may be enough if you don't have significant operational costs if you don't need a new roof, but that's not a certainty," says Molly Kirkland with the Southern California Rental Housing Association. The Senate Appropriations Committee will hear Assembly Bill 1482 Friday and decide whether or not to move it out of suspense file status for the rest of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion.
