Not traffic, honking, planes and helicopters.“It's tough,” Dr. Job said. “It's cold it's rainy sometimes I sit in the middle of thunderstorms hoping for the best sometimes I'm surrounded by animals that are big.”He’s battling the elements in Yellowstone National Park for a purpose; his purpose is to quiet the national parks.“It's an issue,” Dr. Job said. “Over the last decade visitation to the national parks has skyrocketed.”Hundreds of millions of people visit national parks every year, and with people comes noise. Dr. Job manages the Listening Lab, which is part of the Sound and Light Ecology Team at Colorado State University.  The group of students he leads found that noise doubled background sound levels in 63 percent of U.S. parks and protected areas.That’s why Dr. Job’s team spend days in national parks across the country recording their natural sounds. Back at the Listening lab, Elena Gratton is listening through recordings from Yellowstone National Park.“I'll probably go back to these spots and pull out those sounds,” Gratton said.One of the highlights? Wolves howling without any cars or people.She’ll put together the best parts so people who aren’t able to visit a national park can still listen and be transported.“You can see a picture of this place and that's great but it's on a screen,” Gratton said. “But the moment you put these headphones on you can shut your eyes and you can be there.”Jared Lamb is listening for a different purpose. He categorizes the sounds he hears and that information goes to the national parks. They then use it to determine how to better manage noise pollution.“When I first came it was, it didn't really, it didn't really feel like I was doing much,” Lamb said. “It just felt like a lot of numbers. But now after being here for a while I kind of see the implications and how important it is.”Parks then can do anything from unplugging a generator to limiting helicopter tours. It started in New York, but today the group "Survivor Corps" is reaching thousands across the country.Long Island resident Diana Berrent created the group after testing positive for COVID-19 back in March."I wasn't the very first person to get COVID in my county, but I was among the first and at a point where we knew very little about the virus," said Berrent. "And with that came both a responsibility and this incredible opportunity to really change the shape of the future of science and the understanding of this virus through us, through survivors who have antibodies in our blood."On the Survivor Corps website, COVID-19 survivors can connect with research institutions across the country so their blood or convalescent plasma can be used to find a vaccine or treatment."I have now donated eight times, which is the full allotted times I was allowed to at the New York Blood Center," Barrent said. "But every one of those donations can save three to four lives."Her experience has inspired thousands on the Survivor Corps Facebook page to do the same. Like Tracy Eisen, a nurse living in North Phoenix who tested positive for the virus in April. She first joined the group to find support."It did feel at the time that there was a stigma. A lot of people were testing positive but we weren't seeing the numbers in Arizona that we're seeing now," Eisen said. "I went in and immediately posted and got so much support. Strangers really came to my aid."Now that she has recovered, Eisen said she has donated plasma once a week since May."My hope is that I'm helping to save some lives," she said.But many in the group, like Glendale resident Lotus Moreno, are still fighting."I was shocked to hear about how many people who have had it early on and are dealing with what everyone's basically been calling a relapse, because we really don't know what it is," she said.Moreno said she had COVID-like symptoms in February but tests weren't available at the time. She said she tested positive for the antibodies in April, which according to the Centers for Disease Control, indicates she was likely infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 at some point in the past.But three weeks ago, she says her COVID-like symptoms returned. She tested negative for the virus, but says her doctor believes it may be a false negative or post-COVID issues.She says the group is filled with people across the country who share similar stories."To be able to go in and talk to people who are going through it, just a complete mindset change to where you don't feel so isolated and you feel validated because that's very easy to be dismissed," Moreno said.Berrent says they are not medical professionals, but they have been bringing in professionals to join them on Facebook Live videos as an educational tool for members to learn and ask questions."We serve as a great resource for them to come lurk and let them see what people are talking about so they know what their studies should involve," Berrent said. We’re monitoring live brain waves."She says, in a recording of the brain’s waves, she can see certain brainwave activity associated with challenges like depression or anxiety.“If someone has too much or too little of something, that causes them to have symptoms," Myles said.She says with neurofeedback, they then “train” the brain to perform better.A patient sits in a chair with electrodes attached to their head as they watch a screen with headphones on. Their brain is rewarded when their brainwaves are in a certain range with a screen that brightens and audio that plays louder in their headphones.“The brain is training to do what we’re asking it to do," Myles said.Think of it as conditioning, just like any other part of the body.“Your brain is a muscle, just as if you were to have a sprained ankle or a broken leg. You can’t expect someone to run a race with it," Tripp said.Shelli sees the methods they use at The Mind Gym as a way to treat mental health beyond traditional paths such as medication, and a way to reach breakthroughs that can feel hard to find.“It’s kind of like an onion. It will unfold stuff," Myles said. "So the importance of having a counselor while you’re doing neurofeedback is important.”Though it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health says Neurofeedback is an alternative method that has shown improvement in treating many mental health disorders. But its report suggests the benefits aren’t long-lasting.“I’m able to sleep for the first time in my life," Tripp said.Tripp says her sessions twice a week for six months have undeniably worked for her.“Colors are brighter, food tastes different, it’s beyond words really," Tripp said. “To know I could have transformed my life so long ago, nobody should be struggling right now that this is out there.” 2506

  

INDIANAPOLIS – A veteran and retired postal worker missed his funeral after his remains were lost in the mail delivery process.The ashes of Richard Nelson, who once served in the Navy, remain missing.Years after leaving the military, Nelson headed for Arizona and left specific instructions to his family on how he wanted services handled following his death.In July, the funeral home in Arizona mailed Nelson’s remains on August 1, and the tracking number stated it was to arrive in Indianapolis on August 2.Nelson’s nephew, Scott Hare, had plans to drive the ashes to Michigan for services – but he never received the package.The memorial service went on as scheduled and the cemetery plot next to his parents had to be refilled until further notice."I have to keep telling people I don't know anything, there's no closure,” said Hare.Hare said his moments of sorrow were overcome with pride.“At some point, I had to laugh,” said Hare. “He retired from the post office and was lost at the post office. However, doctors are finding women may be finding unhealthy ways to cope.A poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found mothers were more likely than fathers to say they've started drinking more.Substance abuse experts say that in general, women are 1.3 times more likely to increase their drinking while stressed.Experts say women are typically under more pressure to do it all.“There are higher expectations, I think, for women to just really keep it all together, to carry the family at home, possibly to carry the family professionally and financially, depending on the situation at home,” said Stefanie Magalong, Clinical Services Director at Laguna Treatment Hospital.Experts say if women notice they're feeling more anxious and depressed, having less energy and sleeping more, those are signs they should find a healthy way to cope.They could practice self-care by going for a walk, taking a bath, or working out.It's also very important to find support in family and friends.“Really during this time, we need to feel more connected, we need to be talking more to our loved ones and spouses, trying to get support, rather than pulling away,” said Magalong.The first step is to acknowledge we may not be coping in healthy ways, and that this is an unusual time for everyone. 1353
