BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) Friday introduced its new spokesmen, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng and Colonel Yang Yujun, to domestic and foreign media during a press tour to an engineering regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Geng, 50, and Yang, 40, have become the ministry's third and fourth spokesmen.Their appointment came ahead of the PLA's founding anniversary on Aug. 1. Their two predecessors, Hu Changming and Huang Xueping, have been transferred to other jobs in the ministry.Geng told Xinhua that the MOD plans to hold regular press briefings, since 16 other ministries have done so.About 140 reporters, photographers and cameramen from home and abroad visited the engineering regiment building in southern suburban Beijing, watching dozens of soldiers demonstrating a mock rescue operation at a building which was "reduced" to rubble in a quake.Founded in 1964, the engineering regiment trains rescue members for the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR), which was established in 2001 with its personnel drawn from the China Seismological Bureau and the General Hospital of the Armed Police Force.The CISAR has completed six domestic rescue operations in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Sichuan, and six international rescue missions in Algeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Haiti.After watching the simulation training, many reporters held interviews with the CISAR members and enquired as to how they managed to work in the face of big disasters."I felt deeply sad and hopeless when someone died in front of me after the quake," said Gao Yansheng, a 19-year-old CISAR member, who took part in the Yushu earthquake search and rescue operation in April.Another CISAR member, whose name was not given, said he was "astonished and also anxious" during the Sichuan earthquake rescue work in 2008.Liu Xiangyang, deputy director of the CISAR, said in an interview with Xinhua that CISAR members became physically and psychologically stronger after going through the Sichuan earthquake rescue work.CISAR members needed to learn more about earthquakes and put up with more complicated disaster situations, Liu added."It will become a routine activity of the PLA to open its military bases for the media interaction beginning around August 1," said Senior Colonel Li Zhen, vice director with the MOD's International Communication Office. TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday. CHONGQING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- A delegation led by Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) chairman Chiang Pin-kung will arrive at Chongqing on Monday for the fifth round of talks with the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS).The talks will be held on Tuesday, with the much-anticipated Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) and an agreement on intellectual property protection likely to be signed.Chiang told a news conference in Taipei Sunday that the signing of ECFA would profoundly influence Taiwan's economy, particularly in trade and investment, as well as the development of relations between Taiwan and the mainland.He said he expected a positive change of Taiwan's economic development mode after the signing of ECFA.The two sides will hold a vice-chairman level preparatory discussion on Monday afternoon.After the talks, Wang Yi, head of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, will meet the SEF negotiators on Tuesday.Bo Xilai, secretary of the Chongqing municipal committee of the Communist Party of China, will also meet the representatives from the two sides on Wednesday morning.The SEF delegation is scheduled to leave Chongqing on Wednesday afternoon.Since June 2008, when regular talks between the SEF and ARATS were restarted, the two sides had held four rounds of talks respectively in Beijing, Taipei, Nanjing and Taichung.The talks brought about several agreements regarding among other things: mainlanders visiting Taiwan, cross-Strait shipping, air transportation, cooperation in fighting against crime and mutual legal assistance.

CHANGSHA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Ten people have been confirmed dead after two manganese mines in central China's Hunan Province were flooded two weeks ago, local authorities said Monday.Water gushed into the two mine pits run by Leixin Mining Development Co. and Wenhua Manganese Co. in Huayuan County of Xiangxi Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture at about 6:10 p.m. on July 20, trapping a total of 13 miners underground.Rescuers pulled three miners alive out of the mines on July 29 and sent them to hospital. Currently, they are in stable condition, a spokesman with the Hunan Provincial Work Safety Administration said Monday.Rescuers had earlier retrieved seven bodies, and they found the last three bodies on Sunday morning, the spokesman said.Local authorities are further investigating the cause of the accident, he added.
