(KGTV) - A chain reaction crash on SR-125 in East County sent two drivers to the hospital Monday.A 25-year-old woman driving a Hyundai failed to stop in time to avoid hitting a Toyota Camry at the Grossmont Center Dr. exit at 9:10 a.m., CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.The Hyundai rear-ended the Camry, pushing the Camry into oncoming traffic on SR-125.A Chevy Impala driver on the freeway did not have time to react and struck the driver’s side of the Camry, officers said.Officers had to pull the Camry’s driver, a 23-year-old woman, from her vehicle. She was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with moderate to major injuries.The driver of the Impala had moderate injuries.The Hyundai’s driver, a 49-year-old woman, was not hurt.CHP officers do not suspect drugs and alcohol as factors in the crash. 832

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is looking for a man who attempted to rob a Burger King, threatening employees with a gun, in El Cajon off of Old Highway 80. Deputies say the man ordered food and when the cashier told him the amount owed, he pulled out the gun and demanded money. The employees ran to the back and the suspect shot his gun at least once before running off, according to deputies.There were no customers inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting and none of the employees were hurt. The suspect was seen taking off westbound on Old Hwy 80 in a dark-colored pick-up truck. He's described as white or Hispanic, 5'8", and about 200 pounds. EAST COUNTY (CNS) - One person was killed and two people were seriously injured Saturday in a head-on collision in Dulzura, Cal Fire officials said.The collision happened at 6:35 a.m. on state Route 94 near Community Building Road, according to Cal Fire, with one victim taken to a hospital by air ambulance and another by ground ambulance.The California Highway Patrol said a vehicle went off the side of the road about 50 feet down an embankment and was totaled.Traffic on SR-94 was stopped in both directions for several hours while the accident was cleared and investigated. (KGTV) -- In 1987, at the age of six, Cody Martinez moved from Pine Valley to the Sycuan Reservation to live with his grandmother."My dad is Kumeyaay and Hispanic that is my link to my maternal grandmother, who is a tribal member here at Sycuan," said Martinez, the Chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. "Going from Pine Valley to Sycuan wasn't too difficult; both were pretty rural.""San Diego County has the most Indian reservations within the county line in North America," he said. "There wasn't a lot of cultural events that I could recall. The first large cultural event that I could vividly remember was our first pow wow that we hosted in 1989. Today we have a full-blown cultural resource department and museum, and we have monthly cultural events."As Martinez grew older, his interest and involvement in the community also grew."At a young age, I realized that we had our own community, that had its own authority," he said. "We had a tribal council, we made our own laws, and we had our own rules, and I just knew that that's something I wanted to be a part of."In high school, Martinez said he volunteered in the tribal office and sat on different committees. As a young adult, he worked for Sycuan's gaming commission for a few years, then landed a seat in the tribal council as the tribal treasurer.After taking some time off after losing reelection as tribal treasurer, he later took a role in the planning and development department.Ultimately, Martinez would gain support from tribal families in 2014 and make his way into a leadership role, serving as the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation's Chairman.He was reelected in 2018 and currently holds the position."Sometimes, with all the political craziness and COVID craziness, I find solitude and reassurance that we get to manage our own community," he said.Martinez is thrilled to celebrate Native American Heritage Month again, hanging on to the rich history and keeping it alive by passing it all down to the next generations."The cultural exposure, I have two sons, 10 and 12, to their generation has definitely grown, their exposure and access to cultural enrichment. My sons were able to learn how to count in Kumeyaay and basic numbers and directions when they were very young," he said. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Sunday after an El Cajon officer was seriously injured after being dragged by a vehicle earlier in December.According to police, Keani Flores, 28, was a passenger in the vehicle involved in the assault on the officer, Nick Cirello.The driver of the vehicle, David Pangilinan was seen in the Oakhurst area by officers,When police tried to conduct a traffic stop, Pangilinan fled the scene and “evaded apprehension,” police said. Flores was reportedly located at a motel nearby. Authorities are still searching for Pangilinan.Officer Cirello was hit by the vehicle on December 14 on the 100 block of West Washington Street after officers responded to a call regarding a vehicle blocking the roadway with the driver and passenger asleep inside the vehicle.When officers tried to wake the pair up, the driver provided identification for someone else before starting the vehicle.When Cirello tried to stop him, he was dragged before being struck by another vehicle traveling past the scene.Cirello was taken to the hospital before being released on December 18.
