BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- One of China's two leading State-owned shipbuilders, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said Sunday that its profit in 2009 jumped 18.5 percent to 7.39 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars).The Beijing-based conglomerate, which consists nearly 50 industrial subsidiaries and about 30 R&D institutes in northern China, also said its operating income rose 17 percent in 2009 to 120.9 billion yuan.General manager Li Changyin said the CSIC had overcome the impact of the global financial crisis, which crippled the global sea-based trade and brought down ship orders.Li said technological innovations had enabled the CSIC to build 180,000-dwt bulkers, 320,000-dwt oil tankers, 13,000-TEU containers as well as new types of drilling platform which can be used in water depths up to 400 feet (120 meters).According to Li, CSIC had also been actively engaged in non-ship businesses including manufacturing of wind power and nuclear power equipment, accounting for 40 percent of the CSIC's business volume.Li said the CSIC profit target for 2010 was 8 billion yuan. The operating income was expected to surpass 140 billion yuan and the CSIC output in 2010 was likely to break 10 million dwt (deadweight tonnage), he added.The CSIC, which has more than 140,000 manpower, launched an initial public share offer at the Shanghai Stock Exchange in December 2009 and raised some 6.4 billion yuan.The CSIC's main shipbuilding and industrial enterprises are based in cities of Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan and Wuchang.The other major shipbuilding conglomerate in China -- the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is based in Shanghai, whose turf is mainly in eastern and southern China.

That has been an inconvenience for those investing, buying housing, and doing banking business on the mainland.According to a statement released Friday by the ministry, Hong Kong and Macao residents entered a peak period for mainland card renewals last year.Cards for those aged 18 and above are valid for ten years. Cards for those under 18 years last three years.The mainland entry cards began to be used on Jan. 15, 1999.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Most of the melamine-tainted milk products recently resurfacing in China have been recalled and destroyed, and none has been put into market or exported, the nation's food safety office said Friday."Due to early discovery and timely check, as of now, most of the tainted milk products have been recalled and destroyed, and none has entered the market or been exported," said the National Food Safety Rectification Office in a statement.Media reports said melamine-tainted dairy products have resurfaced in several Chinese provinces. Explaining why such cases could happen, the office said some producing and processing companies didn't fulfil the responsibilities for food safety and some violators hid tainted milk products or fabricated test reports to dodge inspections.The office urged related departments at all levels to thoroughly investigate the new cases and severely punish violators.In 2008, milk laced with melamine led to the deaths of six babies and sickened 300,000 others who had been fed with baby formula made from tainted milk. ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries.
