Thousands more people are one paycheck away from becoming homeless.As a county, San Diego has the fourth-largest homeless population in the United States. To help, we've created this resource guide to help those in need for assistance.WHERE TO START Dial 211: You can reach a free, confidential hotline for help with multiple services. Representatives are on hand 24 hours a day to answer all questions. Last year, the hotline received more than 500,000 calls, about a fourth of which dealt with housing concerns. The same services are provided online. Learn more FOR HOUSING City of San Diego: Anyone in need of a bed in one of the city’s four emergency shelters and three bridge shelters will be placed through an assessment, with space going to the “most vulnerable people first”, the city reports. The assessment can be taken at multiple locations around the city, most of which provide other services to the homeless. Learn more San Diego Housing Commission: The City of San Diego also partners with the SDHC to provide care for individuals and families in different stages of homelessness through shelters, help with rental payments, and federal housing vouchers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office released new details about the two victims, an 80-year-old man and his 9-year-old granddaughter, that were killed in a early Monday morning La Jolla house fire.Angie Keefe, her 11-year-old sister, and their father were spending the night at their grandfather's house Sunday. The girls and their grandfather were sleeping upstairs at the home on 548 Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway.The children's father told police he was "downstairs smoking by the fireplace while the decedent was asleep in his upstairs bedroom and his granddaughters were asleep in another upstairs bedroom," the county medical examiner's office said.The children's father told investigators that he poured kerosene on a t-shirt and burned it in the fireplace then fell asleep. The father said he was awoken at around 3:40 a.m. Monday when the fire spread to the living room. A neighbor called police five minutes later while the father tried putting out the fire.With the home engulfed in flames, he ran to the back of the house and yelled for the siblings to jump from the second floor. The older sister jumped into her father's arms but his 9 year-old daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal, remained in her bed.It took crews hours to put out the blaze which destroyed the home."Firemen located the remains of the decedent next to his bed and found his 9 year-old granddaughter in her bed, amongst the debris after the fire had been contained," the county medical examiner's office said. "They were both pronounced dead at the scene."The children's father suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries.The county medical examiner's office said Robert Keefe and his granddaughter suffered "thermal injuries with inhalation of products of combustion." The office lists their manner of death an accident.The San Diego Police Department is handling the investigation. 2065

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California system has appointed its first-ever Black president in the system’s history, Cal Matters said Tuesday.Michael V. Drake will become the 21st president of the University of California.Drake is making the move after leaving The Ohio State University last week. There, he served as the university’s president from 2014 to 2020.Drake was also chancellor of UC Irvine for nine years and served as the University of California vice president for health affairs from 2000 to 2005.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Tierrasanta woman whose toddler died after being discovered in a car was arrested Thursday, San Diego Police said. Police said they waited this long to make the arrest to build evidence for a trial.Twenty-month-old Scarlett was found unresponsive outside the home at 10304 Leary St. on Aug. 5. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child but were unsuccessful. Police said the girl’s mother, Pricilla Marquez Harris, called them at 12:45 p.m. that day to say she could not find her daughter. Harris later called back to say the girl was in her Nissan Altima and not breathing. RELATED: San Diego police: Child found inside parked vehicle in Tierrasanta dies Two days after the girl died, Harris’ cousin and the cousin’s boyfriend suffered possible drug overdoses at the Tierrasanta home. Harris was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation the same day, officials confirmed to 10News.Harris is charged with child endangerment, inflicting great bodily injury on a child under the age of five years, and personal infliction likely to produce great bodily injury or the death of a child.
