(KGTV) - The bluffs that collapsed in North San Diego County Friday, killing three people, are a known trouble spot to a local geologist.Former San Diego State University professor Dr. Pat Abbott has led several geology field trips to Grandview Beach to point out unstable cliffs. Abbott described the cliff as a “solid mass of sand grains cemented together” that suddenly gave way on a sunny and warm afternoon. Waves erode the shoreline in addition to groundwater that seeps into the bluffs, leaving behind white streaks of salt and creating cracks, Abbott said. Can you afford an electric car?EVs tend to be pricy to buy but can be more affordable to lease. Finding federal, state and local government incentives can also reduce sticker shock. And, even if the monthly payment is higher than a comparable gas car, operating costs are lower.Gas vehicles cost an average of ,356 per year to fuel, tax and insure, while electric cost just ,722, according to a study by Self Financial. How far do you need to drive on a single charge?Although almost 60% of all car trips in America were less than 6 miles in 2017, according to the Department of Energy, the phrase “range anxiety” scared many would-be early adopters.Teslas became popular in part because they offered 250 miles of range. But the range of many EVs between charges is now over 200 miles; even the modestly priced Chevrolet Bolt can travel 259 miles on a single charge.Still, EVs have a “road trip problem,” according to Josh Sadlier, director of content strategy for car site Edmunds.com. “If you like road trips, you almost have to have two cars — one for around town and one for longer trips,” he says.3. Where will you charge it?If you live in an apartment without a charging station, this could be a deal breaker.The number of public chargers increased by 60% worldwide in 2019, according to the International Energy Agency. While these stations — some of which are free — are more available, most EV owners install a home station for faster charging.EVs can be charged by plugging into a common 120-volt household outlet, but it’s slow. To speed up charging, many EV owners wind up buying a 240-volt charging station and having an electrician install it for a total cost of ,200, according to the home remodeling website Fixr.4. What will you use the car for?While there are a few luxury electric SUVs on the market, most EVs are smaller sedans or hatchbacks with limited cargo capacity. However, the coming wave of electric cars are more versatile, including vans, such as the Microbus, and trucks, such as an electric version of the popular Ford F-150 pickup.5. Do you enjoy performance?This is where EVs really shine. According to automotive experts, electric cars beat their gas counterparts in these ways:Immediate response with great low-end acceleration, particularly in the 0-30 mph range.Sure-footed handling due to the heavy battery mounted under the car, giving it a low center of gravity.No “shift shock” from changing gears in a conventional gas car’s transmission.Little noise except from the wind and tires.Other factorsOnce you consider the big questions, here are other reasons to make an electric car your next choice:Reduced environmental guilt. There is a persistent myth that EVs simply move the emissions from the tailpipe to the power generating station. Yes, producing electricity produces emissions, but many EV owners charge at night when much of the electricity would otherwise be unused. According to research published by the BBC, electric cars reduce emissions by an average of 70%, depending on where people live.Less time refueling. It takes only seconds to plug in at home, and the EV will recharge while you’re doing other things. No more searching for gas stations and standing by as your tank gulps down gasoline.No oil changes. Dealers like a constant stream of drivers coming in for oil changes so they can upsell other services. EVs have fewer moving parts and require fewer trips to the dealership for maintenance.Carpool lanes and other perks. Check your state regulations to see if an EV gets you access to the carpool lane, free parking or other special advantages.Enjoy the technology. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- As San Diego County inches closer to finally being removed from the state’s watch list, it remains unknown what exactly that will mean for businesses that have been waiting to reopen indoor operations.“We have asked the state for guidance for what they think the policy will be, the process will be, for potentially reopening some of the entities that faced additional closures,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.In the meantime, some cities across the county have been working with businesses to ensure they can still operate outside during the challenging time. Some of those businesses appear to be thriving.“More people are coming out to eat, and as you can see, we’re already almost full here,” said Mia Davis, the owner of Mikko Sushi in downtown Escondido.Davis and her sister-in-law, Minky Jeon, opened Mikko Sushi in February, but just one month later they were forced to shut down indoor dining due to the rising COVID-19 cases across the county.They moved to take out orders only, a struggle for the new business owners.“We were devastated actually because we were just finally starting to build our clientele,” said Davis.Then the City of Escondido stepped in to help businesses move outdoors quickly and easily, making all the difference for business owners like Davis.“The City of Escondido went out of their way to help us,” she said. “They really helped expedite the permit process, and I didn’t have to pay any fees.”Davis told ABC 10News, she was not only able to keep her original staff employed, but Mikko Sushi became so busy with outdoor dining, that she had to hire more employees.“Every Friday night we have a big waiting list,” she said. “I’m thankful that local customers really been supporting us, and I can’t complain.”A walk down Grand Avenue in Escondido reveals how locals have embraced the opportunity to dine outside. The sight is something that brings Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido, much joy.“We’re really happy and proud to be able to support our businesses in that way,” said Tarrac. “The city really took strong, swift action and worked with very closely with our Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Association to allow for and facilitate the permit process to allow for our businesses to operate outside. We expanded that to salons, to restaurants and other retail as well.”During a time where there are many uncertainties for small business owners, Davis said the opportunity to try something new and succeed is rewarding.“I’m thankful that our business is doing well during this pandemic, and I’m thankful for what the city did,” said Davis.The City of Escondido recently launched a grant program to help small businesses. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's 24-hour security in Washington extends to at least some of his personal trips, according to a letter Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse sent to the department's inspector general and shared with CNN.The letter, written based on information that Whitehouse says he confidentially obtained from an unnamed source, raises new questions about the cost of Pruitt's unprecedented EPA-funded security, and alleges that Pruitt has used his security detail while on non-official business, including trips home to Tulsa, Oklahoma, a family vacation to Disneyland and the Rose Bowl game.Whitehouse, D-Rhode Island, says the new details should be added to the inspector general's ongoing investigation into Pruitt's travel expenses and use of a 24/7 security detail. The documents, he wrote, raise concern "significant agency resources are being devoted to administrator Pruitt's 'round-the-clock security, even when he is traveling on non-official business."Whitehouse adds, "While I consider matters of personal security to be extremely serious, personal security should never be used as a pretext to obtain special treatment."The letter alleges that six weekly schedules and other explanatory documents that were provided to him show that Pruitt used between two and three dozen different agents during a six-week period.Asked about the letter, the EPA told CNN that "Administrator Pruitt follows the same security protocol whether he's in his personal or official capacity," but declined to further elaborate on those protocols.The EPA has said that Pruitt has faced unprecedented threats, including direct threats on his life, leading to equally unprecedented security measures.CNN reached out to the EPA's Office of Inspector General, which did not comment on the case.Pruitt has been under increased scrutiny for citing security as the reason he flew first class on the government's tab, racking up nearly 0,000 in travel costs. On one trip to Italy, from June 5-12 of last year, his security detail alone amounted to more than ,000.Several Trump Cabinet members have faced criticism for their travels. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has several open investigations into his use of private aircraft and attendance at political events. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price left after probes of his use of private planes. And recently fired Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin began his downward spiral after an inspector general report found he used agency funds on a trip for his wife.Whitehouse's office would not allow the documents or schedules to be reviewed, saying they contain sensitive security information. In addition to the family trips to Disneyland and the Rose Bowl game, the letter also alleges the security officials accompanied Pruitt on a trip to a December 29 University of Kentucky basketball game in Lexington.Whitehouse's letter also states that "more than one source" says Pruitt "frequently requested per diem lodging expenses in excess of the federal government's established daily rate."Pruitt's travel and security costs have gotten the attention of the EPA's inspector general and his fellow Republicans, including House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, who recently made Pruitt turn over all of his travel records for his first year.In a letter to Gowdy, Pruitt said his security team required him to be near the front of the plane for a quick exit in the case of an emergency. However, Pruitt did not turn over the waivers that are necessary to fly in an upgraded cabin.Whitehouse's letter asks the inspector general to see if Pruitt flies first class on non-official trips, and if so, whether the EPA pays for the security detail's flights, accommodations and per diems.Pruitt told CBS News recently: "There's a change coming" in the way he travels, "including flying coach," and in the way his staff will accommodate security threats.In October, CNN reported the EPA was beefing up Pruitt's 24/7 security, hiring a dozen more agents. At the time CNN calculated salaries alone for the full team would cost at least million per year, according to figures compiled from public documents. Those numbers do not include costs such as training, equipment, and travel.CNN also reported that some agents were pulled from other EPA jobs where they had been charged with investigating environmental crimes, and Whitehouse asks the inspector general to look at the impact of the shift in personnel.The-CNN-Wire 4496
