SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Food and Drug Administration has recalled several types of tattoo ink after determining they were contaminated with bacteria. One of them is the popular black ink made by Dynamic Color. The FDA found that two of their lots tested positive for microorganisms. The recall includes all bottles of Scalpaink SC, Scalpaink PA, and Scalpaink AL basic black tattoo inks manufactured by Scalp Aesthetics. One lot of Color Art’s red Solid Ink-Diablo was also included. Tattoo shops across the country were contacted through their local health departments about the recall. One of the largest tattoo parlors in San Diego, SD Tattoo, says they got the email Wednesday morning and immediately searched through their inks.They did have the Dynamic black ink, but tattoo artist Nicki Ninteman said, "We checked all the lot numbers and all of ours are clean, so we’re good."She said they didn't have either of the other two brands in the shop.According to the FDA, people who have been tattooed with contaminated ink can experience rashes or lesions of red papules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The "Idaho River" has dried up.Repairs to a water transmission line in North Park are nearly complete, days after thousands of gallons of water flooded the neighborhood.Crews were out Friday replacing the broken 90-year-old, cast-iron pipe with a new PVC pipe and repaving the large hole formed at the intersection of Idaho Street and Polk Avenue.A portion of the road over the pipe's location Saturday morning remained closed off for crews to complete spot paving and cleanup.NORTH PARK WATER MAIN BREAK: 542

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open.  The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13.  It's been a controversial project from the beginning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The city of San Diego may turn to homeowners to help chip away at the housing crisis.On Wednesday, the San Diego Housing Commission floated the idea of offering loans to homeowners in the city to build backyard granny flats to be rented out as affordable housing. The plan could help homeowners pay their mortgage while also providing more low-income units to those who qualify. "They present an opportunity to increase production at potential lower costs in a faster time frame and with a smaller environmental footprint," said Jeff Davis, the housing commission's chief of staff.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: San Diego's housing market cooling down, new report showsThe commission pitched the idea to the city's Land Use and Smart Growth committee Wednesday. Councilmembers on the committee appeared to be in support of the idea. The idea comes about a month after Poway Mayor Steve Vaus floated a plan for his city to pay to build granny flats in backyards to be rented as affordable homes. The city would take a cut of the rent for about ten years before the homeowner gets it outright. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The environmental community is concerned that individuals using masks are disposing of the face-covering properly.Dimitri Deheyn is a Scripps Institution of Oceanography research scientist and studies biodegradable objects, something disposable masks are not. He said around the world, researchers are seeing an increase in trashed masks on beaches, which will ultimately end up in the ocean and harm wildlife and our ecosystem.In addition, when the disposable masks are thrown away, the string can become a danger to animals if not cut, so he said if you have to use disposable masks, cut the string that goes around the ear.Deheyn has been working with a company based in Austria called Lenzing that typically makes eco-friendly comfortable clothing from fibers that can degrade, making them better for the environment. He said the company shifted to making biodegradable masks when the pandemic hit, and he’s helped test them.“Basically test them, we put them in the seawater and see if they degrade and yes they degrade,” he said.He said there are U.S. companies that make a similar product, and this is what people should be wearing instead of disposable masks. He said reusable masks are another solution to helping save the environment.“If you are acting as an individualistic human being, and you oppress nature, at the end this could be very bad for us as a human society,” he said, encouraging everyone to do their part. 1457
