WAUWATOSA, Wis. — A 3-year-old in Wisconsin can see for the first time thanks to a new procedure.  McKinley Sovey is the youngest person to undergo this type of gene therapy. Her parents Parker and Julie Sovey have been watching her progress."There was that moment when she did look at me for the first time," said Julie. "I was like I think this is working. I can't even really explain it.  She's 3 years old and she looks at mom for the first time. It was a really really cool moment and it was the moment I was waiting for."McKinley was born practically blind. The most she could see was the contrast of light. When she was a year and a half, doctors discovered she inherited a retinal disease.  "Six months after that FDA approval, and then less than a year after that she's having the procedure, so it's been like rapid fire," Parker said. Dr. Stephen Russell works in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Hospital. He performed both of McKinley's eye surgeries with the gene therapy earlier this month.  "Complicated drug because it has multiple parts to the drug and complicated surgery because to make sure we delivered the drug to the appropriate tissues," said Russell.Russell said he is basically forcing DNA into the right cell."We had to do a surgery just to put the solution in the appropriate spot, which is in the area underneath the retina," he said. "At that point, it's just fingers crossed that this gene ends up in the spot that it's supposed to," said Julie.The Soveys knew there were risks and potential complications.  "It's terrifying," said Russell.They were hoping the therapy would at least help McKinley maintain the little vision she had. After the first eye surgery, mom and dad didn't notice a difference. But it was shortly after the second surgery they knew it worked. Parker said she was moving with a purpose."She walked into the kitchen, pulled a chair out, stood up on the chair and actively feeling like the toaster and the coffee maker like she knew those were there and she wanted to get up and be able to feel them," he said.McKinley's depth perception is also changing."Being able to see things further away has been really neat and it's also been kind of scary because I feel like I'm having to re-childproof the house for a 3-year-old," said Julie."She use to feel around for whatever it was she was eating," Parker said. "Then she'd put her hands in it to see what it was and then she'd put the spoon in it, and then usually it was dumped by the time it got to her face."McKinley will still likely be visually impaired, but her parents said any progress is a bonus."She may no longer need to be a braille reader," Julie said. "I don't know if she'll need to use a cane to navigate."They said their daughter is becoming more confident and her personality is even changing."This is kind of part of medical history," said Julie.McKinley has some checkups scheduled, but doctors hope she won't need another surgery. 3071

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Better Business Bureau is warning the public about multiple contact tracing scams.The BBB says scammers are taking advantage of people’s fears about contracting the coronavirus as public health officials roll out contact tracing programs.These programs are developed to help slow the spread of COVID-19 by informing people who may have come in contact with someone who has tested positive.According to the BBB, the scam takes two forms – through messages or via phone call.The unsolicited messages can come via texts, emails or social media messengers. They claim that you’ve come in contact with someone with COVID-19, you’re instructed to self-isolate and link is provided to learn more details. Don’t click the link. It may contain malware that downloads to your device.The phone version of the scam involves a robocall claiming to be part of “contact and tracing efforts,” according to the BBB. Again, the call informs you that you’ve been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. After electing to speak to a representative, the “contact tracer” asks you to verify personal information. While contact tracers do normally reach out by phone, be sure to hang up if the caller doesn’t meet certain guidelines.The BBB says this how to tell a real contact tracer from a scammer:· Contact tracers will ask you to confirm your identity, but not for financial information. Tracers will ask you to confirm your name, address, and date of birth. In most cases, they will already have this information on file. They will also ask about your current health, medical history, and recent travels. They will not ask for any government ID numbers or bank account details.· Contact tracers will identify themselves: The call should start with the tracer providing their name and identifying themself as calling from the department of health or another official team.· Contact tracing is normally done by phone call. Be extra wary of social media messages or texts.· A real contact tracer will never reveal the identity of the person who tested positive. If they provide a person’s name, you know it’s a scam.· Think the link may be real? Double check the URL. Scammers often buy official-looking URLs to use in their cons. Be careful that the link is really what it pretends to be. If the message alleges to come from the local government, make sure the URL ends in .gov (for the United States) or .ca (for Canada). Weeks ago, it was thought that the US was on its way to reopening the economy with the coronavirus no longer posing the threat to the nation it once did.And then increases of testing have shown in recent weeks the virus is not only more prevalent than previously thought, but is spreading at a faster rate.Last Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the states bars to close. Fellow Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida made a similar announcement, prohibiting on-site alcohol consumption at bars.Come Monday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey also closed bars in his state. The sudden reversal came out of necessity as all three states are concerned that hospitals could be overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.So what makes bars uniquely dangerous?Bars are largely places meant for extended social interaction. That has led to several recent outbreaks of the virus.For instance, there were at least 100 reported cases tied to an outbreak in the Tigerland nightlife district in Louisiana. A group of 16 friends all tested positive for the virus after a visit to a bar, according to local reports."It seems like the largest growing sector of cases in the United States seems to be in the 18 to 40 year old range," Zach Jenkins, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Cedarville University. "Bars also seem to be a common source that infections are springing from. In my estimation, what we're seeing is the direct result of lockdowns easing up. Bars were physically closed throughout the country, people had minimal to no access to alcohol, and many people canceled their vacation plans. "Bars are often social experiences by nature, and younger crowds are more likely to frequent them. When alcohol consumption is added to the mix, people are less likely to keep their distance or practice other behaviors that limit the spread of the virus. Another layer to consider is that many bars lack outdoor seating in larger cities may have limited outdoor seating. Add all of that together, and you start to see why bars seem to be such a hot spot for activity."The CDC still encourages people to remain six feet apart and wear masks in public settings, which could be a challenge consuming alcohol while in a crowded bar.The CDC has released guidelines for the public to decide on whether it's safe to visit places such as bars and restaurants.
