SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Police are investigating a reported scam that seems to be targeting the elderly.Frank Dabalack says someone knocked on his door Monday at noon, claiming they could fix a dent on the back of his car for 5.  “I’ve wanted it fixed for a long time and here’s a guy who came over, it looked like he knew what he was doing,” Dabalack said.But once he agreed and the man and his crew began work the price kept jumping to nearly 0.“I was angry with myself,” Dabalack said, “because I knew it was scam, and I’d been scammed.”He found out with the help of his neighbor, who he asked to come over.  She took a closer look at the men’s repair work. She says they were damaging the car instead of fixing it. They covered the back of the car with some gooey residue but never touched the dent.  One of the men also took pliers to the grill and started bending it out of shape.When she started asking them questions, they took off. Dabalack says he wrote them a check for 5 but was able to cancel it with his bank.Martinez said when police arrived, they said they were familiar with the scam. The men look for handicapped plates on cars in driveways and try to trick the owners into paying large amounts of money.“Frank is from a generation where people kept their word, not scammed the elderly,” Martinez said. “Frank is like a dad to me. I don’t like anyone doing that to him or any senior.”  1445

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego home values continue to grow as the market shows signs of slowing, according to a report by Zillow. The company says the median home value in San Diego currently sits at 1,500, rising just over one percent year-over-year. According to Zillow, at this time last year, home values were growing by about 6.1 percent. San Diego’s housing inventory also increased over the last year, jumping six percent. According to the site, there are 531 more homes on the market than last July. In the rest of the U.S., the median home is worth 9,000, up 5.2 percent from a year ago. By this time last year, home values in the U.S. rose at 7.7 percent. Despite the slowing trend, Zillow says home values are still growing in 48 of the top 50 markets. Zillow says San Jose and San Francisco are the exceptions, indicating stabilizing values following a period of extreme growth. 906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans will now be able to pay for a Lyft the same way they binge-watch their favorite series.The ride-sharing company announced Tuesday it is expanding its subscription-style All-Access plan nationwide, allowing customers to pay for a set of discounted rides.The All-Access Plan will allow users to purchase 30 rides up to each every month for 9. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria says the city's convention center shelter for the homeless will be funded through at least the first month of 2021.Gloria said in a release that he's directing staff to provide funding using money previously slated for shelter operations in November and December that wasn't spent due to cost-saving measures and other factors, as well as a state grant specifically for funding homelessness-related services."I am committed to protecting our homeless neighbors from COVID-19 while keeping a focus on connecting them to long-term housing," Gloria said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police arrested nine people suspected of driving under the influence Saturday night. According to the department, the checkpoint was held on the 1400 block of G Street between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. A total of 2,403 vehicles went through the checkpoint, police say. More than 400 vehicles were screened, 13 drivers evaluated and nine people arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. San Diego Police said in a news release that they plan to conduct another DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Halloween. The department also plans to increase patrol on Halloween to screen for intoxicated drivers. This week, companies like Uber are offering tips on how to get around for Halloween.
