SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego native made history at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, becoming the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish what many consider the world's most grueling endurance race. Roderick Sewell crossed the finish line of the 140-mile triathlon race in 16 hours and 26 minutes and immediately embraced his mother. The two lived in San Diego homeless shelters when Sewell was growing up."It's amazing to see how far we've come in 20 years," said the 27-year-old.It's even more amazing when you consider that Sewell had never completed a marathon before Saturday's competition. The Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 114-mile bike ride, and ends with a 26.2-mile marathon.On top of that, Sewell had only six months to train after receiving an invitation from the Ironman organization."I had no bike. I didn't own one" until a few months before the competition, said Sewell. Sewell raced with strategy help from his longtime friend and mentor Rudy Garcia-Tolson. Garcia-Tolson became the first above-the-knee double amputee to finish any Ironman 10 years ago."Back when I first met Roderick, he was about 8 years old. He was actually petrified of the water," Garcia-Tolson said. "Whatever life is throwing at you, mental or physical challenges, you have to fight and get over those and strive for better."Sewell, whose legs were amputated at 2 years old because he was born without tibias, credits much of his success to the San Diego-based Challenged Athletes Foundation. He was introduced to the group at 8 years old."I didn't do any kind of sports. I wasn't very physically active," he said. "And then I started with them and got started in every sport I could."CAF gave Sewell his first running blades at a time when he and his mother were living in homeless shelters."If I can inspire someone, it's a blessing," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego pilot is attempting a historic flight to promote global peace. Robert DeLaurentis will first be traveling to the South Pole and then to the North Pole, connecting the only two places on the planet where peace exists. "It's a mission of global peace. We like to say oneness. One planet, one people, one plane," said DeLaurentis.They have been working on upgrading the 1983 aircraft for several years now; DeLaurentis named it Citizen of the World. "It's like taking a classic car and turning it into a race car. It's been talking to us, letting us know what needs to be fixed or replaced," DeLaurentis says.It's not the first time DeLaurentis has attempted an ambitious journey. In 2015, he circumnavigated the globe, braving a failing engine at one point. "My dad says he'd prefer I have a country club membership than do these flights!" jokes DeLaurentis.But it was on that trip he learned no matter where you live, we're all more similar than we may think. DeLaurentis will be the first to complete the journey with this class of airplane. And will also be the first to use biofuel over the poles, which is better for the environment.He'll have a NASA experiment on board and will also be testing the air for pollutants every step of the way.DeLaurentis will face harsh conditions in the South Pole, like extreme winds and weather fronts. But despite the dangers, he says this is what he's meant to do."People work hard, and they get to the point where they decide they want to do some other things, for me, it's just to go out in the world and maybe make a difference. So I'll take my chances."The San Diego pilot is getting help from over 90 sponsors to make the trip a reality. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

A wreath hanging on the side of her home was on the ground. A lighted garland was cut and left in her yard.
