SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A flying eye hospital is bringing medical care to countries in need. One of the doctors who boarded the Orbis International plane in November is from San Diego.“Orbis International is a unique nonprofit focused on training eye surgeons around the world in advanced techniques of surgery," said Dr. Srini Iyengar, an Encinitas-based Oculoplastic Surgeon who volunteers for Orbis. The ultimate goal is to reduce blindness in countries with inadequate access to care.“In the world, preventable blindness is something that is a big concern, not only for the individual but also populations. Every blind person takes two people out of the workforce, not just them, but also someone who is caring for them," said Dr. Iyengar.The nonprofit just returned from Ghana, where 4 out of 5 people are blind from preventable causes. The plane has an operating room in front and a classroom in the back. “Local doctors, they come to the airplane, and they sit in the front seats and watch on the screen what’s going on in the back, and so they’re watching live surgery being performed," said Dr. Iyengar. The local doctors can then train more eye professionals in their country, helping people long after the plane takes off. Dr. Iyengar says both kids and adults receive care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A football player was badly injured during a Homecoming football game at Scripps Ranch High School Friday night. According to a witness, the injury happened five minutes into the second quarter at the 30-year line. The witness told 10News the wide receiver laid on the field for 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived to rush the student to the hospital. School officials and the victim's sister confirmed to 10News that the football player is expected to be okay. 493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A chlorine spill that prompted evacuations in University City was contained Monday evening. 30 gallons of chlorine spilled in the pump room of the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center's Friedenburg Pool about 3:30 p.m. on Executive Drive at Regents Road, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Just after 4 p.m., the department said about 40 children were sheltered in place while crews developed a plan to mitigate the situation. The location is near corporate offices and housing, including UC San Diego's Mesa Residential Apartments.No injuries were reported.Chlorine spill contained to 30 gallons at the JCC pool. No injuries. Among girl names, Olivia was second with 235, according to the county, with Mia, Isabella, Camila, Sophia, Sofia, Victoria, Mila and Charlotte rounding out the top 10.Liam led all boys' names with 242, followed by Noah at 202. Other top 10 boy names were Sebastian, Mateo, Benjamin, Daniel, Ethan, Oliver, Alexander and Logan.It was the third consecutive year in which Emma led all girls' names and the second consecutive year that Liam led among boys. Noah has placed either second or first among boys' names in each of the last four years, according to county data.Nationally, Liam and Emma were second and third, respectively, among names for boys and girls born in 2018, with Jackson and Sophia topping the list, according to the parenting website babycenter.com.In total, 41,555 babies were born in San Diego County in 2018.
