LOS ANGELES (AP) — Helen Reddy, the Australian-born singer who scored an enduring hit with her feminist anthem “I Am Woman,” has died at 78 in Los Angeles.Reddy’s children announced their mother’s death Tuesday evening, saying that while they are heartbroken, they “take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever.”The Australian-born singer enjoyed a prolific career, appearing in “Airport 1975” as a singing nun and scoring several hits, starting with “I Don’t Know How To Love Him" from “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1971.She won the best female pop vocal performance in 1973, thanking her then husband and God, telling the audience “because she makes everything possible.” 700

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Travelers coming through Los Angeles International and Van Nuys airports and Union Station beginning Wednesday will be required to sign a form acknowledging California's recommended 14-day self-quarantine in response to rising coronavirus rates. The form will be available at travel.lacity.org, Mayor Eric Garcetti said during a coronavirus briefing Monday.Garcetti urged people to not travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, not even to go across town because of how widespread COVID-19 cases have been and that it's too dangerous at this time.Garcetti said he is confident the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which is slated at Tuesday's meeting to discuss coronavirus- related restrictions and closures, will make the right decisions."I know this is not popular with everybody, but if we don't take these actions now, when will we?" Garcetti said. "I know there may be some push and pull ... but I think the policies that (the county Department of Public Health) adopted are clear."Garcetti said when local government has hesitated implementing COVID- 19 restrictions, businesses have had to remain closed for longer because of the spread of the virus. But he also said he knows businesses are struggling."I've spoken with our City Council President (Nury Martinez), I've spoken with our county supervisors, and know that if those orders do come down, where we have to stop outdoor dining or limit the hours of other businesses, we will take the funds that we have in business assistance and surge them into those industries to get us through this period to keep those businesses alive to protect those jobs and to make sure that they can stand up again," Garcetti said.Garcetti said Los Angeles County could be out of hospital beds for coronavirus patients by Christmastime, if the rate of COVID-19 positive cases continues on its current trend.Field hospitals may have to be established if that happens, Garcetti said. However, Garcetti said he doesn't think the U.S. Navy's hospital ship Mercy will need to return. It docked at the Port of Los Angeles for use in non- coronavirus cases over the spring and summer as safeguard against a lack of hospital beds that did not materialize.Garcetti said he had a discussion Monday with President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris regarding the state of Los Angeles and its fight against COVID-19, telling them the virus will spread further if people don't follow health protocols."It doesn't matter what you've done last week or last month," Garcetti said he told Biden and Harris. "COVID doesn't care what we've done before today."COVID only cares how we are acting right now, and the moment we stop acting to protect lives, the moment we ignore the numbers or hope that somehow they will just go away is the moment lives are lost."COVID-19 testing sites in Los Angeles will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving, but will reopen Saturday, Garcetti said. 2968

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board. There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan. There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash. One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds. The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. I was in the right place at the right time," he said. The investigation into the landing is ongoing. This story was originally published by Corey Crockett and Cristian Benavides on WPIX in New York City. 2123

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Rosemary Bieker is the owner of a boutique store called Ivy Rose.“Ivy Rose has been in business a little over three years, and it’s a boutique full on on-trend clothing for women of all generations,” Bieker said.Bieker was inspired to start her own boutique after helping people look their best as a personal shopper for 15 years.“The store is a culmination of everything I’ve done in my career.”However, owning a small business is a fairly new endeavor for Bieker. So when the pandemic hit, it hit hard.“Business is down 50% from last year, so that in itself is a financial challenge,” Bieker said.Even with gloves, hand sanitizer and social distancing rules to stay safe, the truth is, fewer people are out shopping. Bieker says she had to learn how to do business virtually. The first step was upping her social media game.“I think I worked harder from March 17, when we were closed, until we reopened, than I ever have in the history of my store. Because you’re learning – like I didn’t know how to make a video, let alone a video of myself."After improving her social media, she knew she had to dig a little deeper to keep customers engaged. However, she didn’t want to go the e-commerce route – selling clothes through a website.“My passion is working with people and helping them one-on-one and wardrobing them and getting the feedback from them," Bieker said. "And e-commerce you basically put things in boxes, you ship them out.”Bieker doesn’t stand alone. Director of Denver Metro Small Business Development Center China Califf says most small businesses in retail thrive on the one-on-one connection with customers. That’s what sets them apart.“Maybe they didn’t have a product line that transitioned well to e-commerce but I’ve seen a lot of businesses that have been like ‘OK, now I have to enter into that space so I’m going to create something that’s aligned with what I already sell in my business and we’ll start with that,'” Califf said.Califf says the small business development center has received request after request of businesses seeking support to move business online. The center offers free consulting from industry experts and provides training courses. At Ivy Rose, Bieker found her own creative online solution. She calls it virtual shopping.“I schedule an appointment through Zoom," Bieker said. "And then what I do is I tour the store with the person just like if you were walking through the store yourself. So I go from rack to rack to rack. And that sounds overwhelming, but really it isn’t, especially if you’re interacting with the person.”Then Bieker rings up the purchase and can get it to the customer through shipping, curbside pickup or delivery if it’s local. Califf says the challenging growth small businesses have faced this year will help them in the future when competing with large companies that sell their products online.“It’s here to stay probably because when you think about diversifying your products and your sales channels, this is a good way to do it," Califf said. "And it’s an unfortunate time for people to be forced into that, but some of it will be lasting.”Bieker says her system has attracted new customers from out of state and she’s confident virtual shopping will continue even after the pandemic.“It’s fun. I enjoy it. It’s not that much different than someone being in the store.” 3377

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A police investigation confirmed suicide was the cause of death of a Black man found hanging from a tree in a Southern California city park last month. Los Angeles County sheriff's officials made the announcement at a Thursday news conference. The body of 24-year-old Robert Fuller was found early on June 10 in a park near City Hall in Palmdale. Sheriff's deputies found no evidence of a crime and an autopsy conducted the next day produced an initial finding of suicide. That outraged Fuller's family, who said he wouldn't have taken his own life. They said authorities were too quick to dismiss the possibility it was a crime. 656
