(KGTV) -- One thing Ernie Togerson, VP for Teague Insurance, and his partner knew when COVID-19 hit, was they wanted to help."We were talking about it and said I really want to do something in the La Mesa community because we're in the La Mesa community." What they didn't know, was how long they'd be helping, for."When we were at 20 weeks the head nurse said 'I never have to worry about folks calling in sick Thursday nights because they know they're gonna get a meal'," Togerson said.23 weeks later, they're still giving free meals to Sharp Grossmont's Intensive Care Unit every Thursday at 8 P.M. on the dot. "We get a chance to talk to them and ask how it's going." COVID hit home for Togerson, his son's an ICU nurse in Michigan. "I told my son we want to do something he said 'bring them meals for the night shift because the day shift gets all the love, and the night shift gets the leftovers'."All of the meals they donate are from restaurants that Teague Insurance covers. While feeding nurses, they're also helping local restaurants, many hit hard from the pandemic.So far, Teague has given out over 300 meals for frontline workers since the start of their efforts. LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Virgin Hyperloop says it made history on Sunday by testing human travel in one of its hyperloop pods for the first time.The company says its two-person pod traveled 107 mph on its 500-meter DevLoop test site in Las Vegas, where more than 400 unoccupied tests have been run before.The first two people to ride in the new form of transportation were one of the company’s co-founders, Josh Giegel, and its director of passenger experience, Sara Luchian.The occupants made the maiden voyage on the newly unveiled XP-2 vehicle, which Virgin says was custom-built with safety and comfort in mind.Virgin says its vehicles glide using no-contact electromagnetic levitation through a vacuum environment that reduces air pressure down to the equivilanet of 200,000 ft. above sea level. That lowers aerodynamic drag allows for higher speeds to be achieved using minimal energy.According to the company’s website, the system can propel passenger cargo pods at speed of over 600 mph.The company says two-person pod was built to demonstrate passengers can safely travel in a hyperloop vehicle and that the final pods will be larger, seating up to 28 passengers.Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group, said in a press release that he hopes the hyperloop will change the way people live, work and travel in the years to come.“I can’t tell you how often I get asked ‘is hyperloop safe?,’” said Jay Walder, CEO of Virgin Hyperloop. “With today’s passenger testing, we have successfully answered this question, demonstrating that not only can Virgin Hyperloop safely put a person in a pod in a vacuum environment, but that the company has a thoughtful approach to safety which has been validated by an independent third party.”This isn’t the only stride Virgin has made with its goal of establishing hyperloop systems across the world. LAKESIDE (CNS) - A pileup on a rain-slick stretch of state Route 67 north of San Vicente Reservoir left one motorist dead Monday and another seriously injured.The chain-reaction series of crashes took place shortly before 7 a.m., when a 37-year-old Alpine woman lost control of her northbound Toyota Yaris near Foster Truck Trail in Lakeside, sending it veering sideways into the path of a southbound Chevrolet Silverado 3500 pickup, according to the California Highway Patrol.The resulting broadside collision fatally injured the driver of the subcompact car, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said. Her name was withheld pending family notification.Following that crash, the truck, which was towing a trailer, careened onto the northbound side of the street, where a Chevrolet HHR station wagon hit it head-on.At that point, a Chevrolet 1500 pickup struck the back end of the HHR, and a Toyota Prius hit the right side of the Chevrolet 3500, Garrow said.Paramedics took the unidentified driver of the HHR to UCSD Medical Center in San Diego for treatment of major injuries. The other two motorists and a passenger in one of the vehicles suffered minor injuries in the wreck and did not require hospital care."It is believed all parties involved were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision," Garrow said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in this accident, according to the CHP. 1420
