BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China and India have agreed to enhance political, economic ties and bolster people-to-people contact during a meeting between Indian President Pratibha Patil and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here on Thursday.It is the Indian president's first official visit to China and the first visit to China by an Indian head of state in the last decade.In the meeting Wen proposed the two states treat bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, enhance high-level communication and bolster cooperation, in a bid to benefit the two peoples and the world."Practicing mutual respect conforms with the fundamental interests of the two states and peoples and will spark new hope for human beings," Wen Jiabao said in the meeting.Patil said India and China share broad common interests in the bilateral and multilateral fields.She pledged to boost high-level contact, cement economic and trade ties, promote two-way investment and people-to-people contact, and strengthen coordination on major international affairs with China.In her meeting with Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, Patil said all the parties of India support the development of relations with China.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said to promote peaceful co-existence and common development of the two countries meets the fundamental interests of both sides, and complies with the mainstream trend of peace and development in Asia and the world."China and India do not pose as threat to each other and their common interests far outweigh differences," he added.Wu said he hopes the two sides understand and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle their differences, and seek common development and a win-win situation."A good China-India relationship makes both winners while a confrontational one makes both losers," he added.Patil said the two countries had conducted sound cooperation not only in bilateral field but also under multilateral frameworks including BRIC and G20.The cooperation between India and China in the Copenhagen climate change summit served as a good example of bilateral cooperation in global affairs, she added.Patil arrived here Wednesday for the week-long state visit.

GUANGZHOU, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen fishermen were confirmed missing Thursday after a fishing boat on the sea near Shantou City of south China's Guangdong Province went missing, a spokesman of the Nanhai Rescue Bureau under the Ministry of Transport said.The spokesman said the boat "Yueyangxi96160" along with several other boats, were being used for fishing on Wednesday afternoon, but was discovered missing when the others returned to port.The bureau sent a search team out at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday after it received an emergency call from the other boats, the spokesman said.The rescue work is ongoing.

VIENNA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming stressed here on Wednesday that China will continue to stick to the policy of opening up and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) in the country.Speaking at a joint press conference with Reinhold Mittelehner, the Austrian economic affairs minister, and Christoph Leitl, president of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Chen said the Chinese government will step up intellectual property protection, and that all foreign investment enterprises in China will be treated equally.He called on Austria's small and mid-sized businesses to invest in China, especially in western China where "there are better chances."China and Austria should amend their agreements on investment protection for better results, Chen said.In addition to cooperation in traditional industries such as machinery, auto parts and transportation infrastructure, China and Austria can also cooperate in clean energy and environmental protection, Chen said.Chen was leading a trade mission to Austria. BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China expressed its concerns Thursday about a Chinese coal ship that ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia.Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a regular press briefing China is paying close attention to the incident and has taken immediate action to deal with it.China is concerned an oil spill may pollute Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Jiang said, adding that the related shipping company and Australian authorities should enhance cooperation to appropriately address the issue.Jiang said China's embassy in Australia contacted local authorities and urged them to ensure the crew's safety.Australia has taken rescue measures in time, she said, noting that the body of the ship has been kept stable and the crew are safe.The Chinese-owned, 230m-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island shortly after 05:00 p.m. local time on Saturday. About two tonnes of fuel oil have spilled, creating a slick about 3 km long and 100 meters wide.The vessel, carrying 950 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tonnes of coal, was bound for China.
