BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- A total of 248 people were arrested in China last year for involvement in food safety cases, food safety authorities said Sunday. The country dealt with 130,000 cases involving food safety last year, including 115 criminal cases, according to a statement of the National Food Safety Regulating Work Office. The cases touched upon such areas as production of edible agricultural produce, food production, food circulation, catering services and food exports and imports,"No major incident occurred last year, and the overall food safety situation maintained stable," said the statement.Last year also saw a nationwide crackdown on "gutter oil", usually made from discarded kitchen waste that has been refined, after media reports that it was commonly used by small restaurants.Since July when the State Council, or Cabinet, ordered the eradication of "gutter oil", 165.7 tons of edible oil has been confirmed to have been disqualified and produced by unknown sources.Chinese authorities since July last year have also cracked down on the use of undisposed tainted milk powder produced before the melamine scandal of 2008.About 2,132 tonnes of melamine-tainted milk powder was seized in the latest crackdown, the statement said.A total of 191 officials were punished for failing to do their duty in food safety enforcement, with 26 of them fired, it said.In July last year, Dongyuan milk powder, produced in west China's Qinghai Province, was found to contain excessive levels of melamine, a toxic chemical normally used in the manufacturing of plastics, which triggered the nationwide crackdown. It is the latest blitz on tainted milk products since 2008 when melamine-tainted milk powder killed at least six infants and sickened 300,000 children across the country.

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Stardust spacecraft depleted fuel and ceased operation on Thursday after a 12-year run, the U.S. space agency said Friday."This is the end of the spacecraft's operations, but really just the beginnings of what this spacecraft's accomplishments will give to planetary science," said Lindley Johnson, Stardust-NExT and Discovery program executive at NASA headquarters in Washington."The treasure-trove of science data and engineering information collected and returned by Stardust is invaluable for planning future deep space planetary missions."Artist's concept of Stardust spacecraft nearing EarthLaunched on Feb. 7, 1999, Stardust flew past the asteroid named Annefrank and traveled halfway to Jupiter to collect the particle samples from the comet Wild 2. The spacecraft returned to Earth's vicinity to drop off a sample return capsule eagerly awaited by comet scientists.NASA re-tasked the spacecraft as Stardust-NExT to perform a bonus mission and fly past comet Tempel 1, which was struck by the Deep Impact mission in 2005. The mission collected images and other scientific data to compare with images of that comet collected by the Deep Impact. The Stardust-NExT met all mission goals, and the spacecraft was extremely successful during both missions. From launch until final rocket engine burn, it travelled approximately 3.54 billion miles. After the mileage logged in space, the Stardust team knew the end was near for the spacecraft. With its fuel tank empty and final radio transmission concluded, the most traveled comet hunter will move from NASA's active mission roster to retired."This kind of feels like the end of one of those old western movies where you watch the hero ride his horse toward the distant setting sun -- and then the credits begin to roll," said Stardust-NExT project manager Tim Larson from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Only there's no setting sun in space."

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- The PlayStation Network's shutdown caused by hacker's attack has cost Sony 14 billion Japanese yen, or 171 million U.S. dollars.Sony revealed the figure on Monday as a part of its overall loss in the massive earthquake and tsunami, 3.2 billion U.S. dollars, in the company's fiscal year ending on March 31, 2011.The 171 million U.S. dollars cover the lost revenue, the customer compensations, the security and legal enhancement fees and the free games the company offered as a goodwill gesture. The cyber-attacks, which kept the PlayStation Network offline from April 20 to May 15, involved the theft of personal data from more than 100 million accounts of the gamers. But the crisis was far from over yet."So far, we have not received any confirmed reports of customer identity theft issues, nor confirmed any misuse of credit cards from the cyber-attack," the company said, "Those are key variables, and if that changes, the costs could change."

BRASILIA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A nationwide program aimed at providing internet access to 80 percent of the country's population by 2014 is forging ahead in Brazil, Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo said on Tuesday. The National Broadband Plan (PNBL), with participation of 13 ministries, is coordinated by Bernardo, who explained details about the project on Tuesday along with Joao Santana, president of Telebras, the state-owned enterprise responsible for managing the project. The authorities have criticized companies that offer internet service for failing to spread internet use in Brazil, offering an expensive service with prices amounting to about 50 U.S. dollars monthly, inaccessible to low-income families."We ended 2010 with 34 percent of Brazilian households with Internet access, and service is also very poor. Almost half of connections are of 256 mbps. We are out-of-date, with the aggravating circumstance that the connections are very expensive," Bernardo said.To speed up the process, the government started negotiating with concessionaire phone companies to improve the service quality and lower the price to about 30 reais (18 dollars), which would allow 80 percent of the population to access internet."During (former president) Lula da Silva's government, we developed a program to interconnect all schools with internet access, but we also want the private sector to do its share," he said.
