BALTIMORE, Maryland — In the early hours of Jan. 19, 2015, the 15-foot Christmas tree proudly displayed in the Great Room of a large Annapolis, Maryland mansion caught fire.It spread through the home killing Sher Grogg's brother, sister-in-law, and their four young grandchildren.“They just didn’t have enough time to do anything, and it was under three minutes and everything was gone,” Grogg said.It's painful for her to talk about, even more distressing to see rooms engulfed in flames, but as an advocate for Common Voices, a coalition whose mission is a fire safe America, she witnesses fire demonstrations.“Oh, it’s horrible. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg.This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers.The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. Sprinklers decrease the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent.Grogg also wants to remind people with this upcoming holiday season to water your tree every day, get rid of it right after the holiday, and unplug your tree every night.National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 13. BALTIMORE, Maryland — With no real place to call home, 67-year-old Randolph Cockrell slept on a porch on Oakmont Avenue Tuesday evening."I didn't know whether the person was still living or what?" recalled Tanya Teagle, who saw police standing over a body in her yard across the alley the next morning, and later learned it was the homeless man known in the area as Mr. Randolph, "He was the neighborhood nuisance.  He would mess with everybody, but you just ignored him and go about your way.  Sometimes he joked with you.  Sometimes he argued with you, but he was a fun person.  He didn't really do too much to bother anyone."That is, until somehow he appears to have drawn the ire of 19-year-old Dion Dixon."The suspect, Mr. Dixon, in some way confronted him,” said Interim Baltimore City Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle, “We don't know what the motive was, but he began assaulting him, chased him and ultimately beat him with a brick."About a mile from the crime scene, friends of the victim's family say Randolph's alcoholism landed him on the street."He would drink too much... get a little belligerent, but most of the time, it was because he was drunk... not that he wanted to harm anybody. He wasn't hurtful,” said Krystal Turner.In fact, some say they had seen Randolph and Dixon together in recent days, laughing and hanging out together, which makes it all that much more disturbing that the teen could be capable of beating him to death with a brick."He walked around with a walker so he could barely walk,” said Teagle, “He's not going to do anything to hurt anybody, because he's incapable to me.  It was real sad to hear someone did that to him — somebody that's defenseless you know?"Dixon is being held at Central Booking on a series of charges including murder and assault. 1840

(KGTV) - A nine hour standoff in Bonita has finally come to an end.Deputies have taken 37-year-old James Gilbert, who was wanted for a domestic violence incident, into custody.He has been booked into San Diego Central Jail on charges of making threats with a weapon, making terrorist threats and resisting arrest.Gilbert refused to come out of the home for hours.A San Diego Sheriff's Department SWAT team brought in two BearCats, made multiple flyovers with a helicopter and even called in a bomb squad.Two blocks of Allen School lane were blocked off all day due to the incident.Witnesses say a man believed to be the suspects brother tried running past the Sheriff's tape, ignoring deputies who tried to stop him.That man was handcuffed and taken into custody.Nearby Ella B. Allen Elementary School and Daly Academy were put on heightened security in light of the crisis. Children left the campuses safely after school let out. Deputies were able to get Gilbert out of the home shortly after 6 p.m.10News is monitoring developments in this story. 1072
