They say it's only making the homeless problem worse. Merle Jones moved to this East Village high rise for the views and the lush lifestyle."It's categorized as a luxury apartment complex, and there's nothing really luxury about it at all right now," said Jones. Homeless people frequent the streets and sidewalks outside the property. "There was a knife fight that broke out and that was in the afternoon," said Jones. "My girlfriend she's not even comfortable walking outside alone so its an issue."In an effort to fight the deadly Hepatitis A outbreak,  more shelters and housing solutions are popping up downtown. One of them is a 16-story high rise for low-income families on 14th and Commercial Streets. "I don’t believe that's a good idea," said Jones. "I think they need to clean up the area because when you have that type of housing, it attracts attention from other areas."The high rise is one of five Father Joe's projects to add about 2,500 affordable housing units. One-third of them would be downtown. More than 500 people signed an online petition to move more housing solutions to other parts of the county. "I think it would be a nice distribution of the concentration of it so that way it's not just one area and one area's problem," said Jones. For now, he's stuck paying high rent for a view he's not happy with.  "I pay quite a bit, so I expect a certain level of lifestyle when I'm living here," said Jones. "When my lease is up, I do plan on moving towards the other end of downtown that’s a little safer and a lot cleaner."The building is set to open January 2021.  1830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft could shut down in California as early as Friday due to a judge's ruling ordering the companies to classify their drivers as employees, not contractors. Uber and Lyft have warned their users and drivers about the possible shutdown. Both companies have appealed the ruling. The issue stems from Assembly Bill 5, a law that classifies contractors as employees, giving them the right to unionize, have access to minimum wage, overtime, paid sick leave and workers compensation benefits. Some Uber and Lyft drivers are in favor of AB5, but many others say they would like to continue working as independent contractors because of the flexibility the job allows them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue responded after a man reportedly got his hand stuck in an industrial tortilla press Thursday night.According to the department, the incident happened just after 5:30 at Tortillera La Perla on the 3100 block of National Avenue in San Diego.The man has been carried out of the factory, but a piece of the equipment is reportedly still stuck to the man's hand. While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away.
