DENVER – Time Magazine has named its first-ever "Kid of the Year" — 15-year-old Gitanjali Rao from Colorado.Gitanjali, who lives in the Denver suburb of Lone Tree, was chosen from a pool of more than 5,000 nominees for her "exceptional leadership" in finding solutions to societal problems such as cyberbullying and water contamination, according to a brief description of the selection process from Time."It was exciting. DENVER — A mom-to-be is counting her blessings after receiving a generous tip from “Catfish” host Nev Schulman, who has the same birthday as her due date.Zulia Reyes works at the Smashburger at the Denver International Airport. She’s been a server for nearly a decade and has worked at the burger restaurant for more than a year.She said she’s met celebrities while working, but her connection with Schulman took it to another level when he asked her when she was due.“I told him Sept. 26," she said. "He’s like, 'That’s my birthday.'”Reyes is 32 weeks pregnant. The two took a picture and after Schulman left, Reyes discovered a big surprise on the table.“The tip was 6 — for my due date, which is Sept. 26, which is his birthday,” Reyes said. “It means the world to my baby and my family. We never expected this to happen to us.”Schulman left a note at the end of the receipt reading, "Congrats on your baby girl! Fingers crossed for 9/26, Nev.”Through tears, Reyes admitted she had lost hope on Monday.“I had one of those days where nothing went right for me at work,” she said.Her husband is out of work as they prepare for the arrival of baby Zulia. DENVER, Colorado — Police officers found the body of 7-year-old Jordan Vong inside the family’s home while executing a search warrant Tuesday night and announced a 16-year-old girl had been arrested for investigation on first-degree murder charges in connection with his death.Denver Police Division Chief Joe Montoya said officers found Vong’s body concealed within the home during the search. He said that Vong’s body was discovered around 9 p.m. and that police believe it was “intentionally concealed.”Montoya said that they discovered additional evidence overnight that led them to take the 16-year-old girl into custody Wednesday morning. He said he could not say anything further about her relationship to Vong because she is a juvenile.Vong was reported missing around 4:30 p.m.?Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, they learned the child had been missing for a few hours already. Police said a family member made the report, but he did not identify the reporting party. Police, family and community members began an immediate search of the area where he was last seen, near his home at Chambers Road and Bolling Drive in the Montbello neighborhood. But the search came to an end when police announced they located Vong’s body at a Tuesday evening news conference.Two girls at Greenwood Middle School, which sits right next to the elementary school, said they befriended Vong after seeing him playing alone on the school’s playground.“We would play tag with him, and I remember asking him what’s his name. And he would say, ‘Jordan’ all smiling and happy,” said 13-year-old Luz Padilla. “When we asked him who were his friends, he would say, ‘I don’t have no friends. You guys are my only friends.’”Gisele Perez, who lives close to Vong and is also 13, said she decided to play with Vong because he was always alone.“When we played with him he just seemed really happy. DENVER, Colo. – A group of entrepreneurs is launching a new app that directs users to Black-owned businesses.“The app is across all 50 states. We just got a notification today about a Black-owned business in Ireland,” said Mariam Kazadi, the co-founder of the BBLK app.The app uses GPS to find Black-owned businesses near you. Or you can search through businesses that allow you to order online. It is organized by the type of service.As communities push for racial justice, there has been growing momentum to support Black-owned businesses. Yelp saw searches for “Black-owned business” spike 6,000% between June and August.Companies rarely identify themselves through Google searches as being minority-owned, which can make it difficult for consumers to find them.“Black-owned businesses not only don’t get visibility, but they don’t get funding. So, we want to put the Black dollar back into the community so those economies and communities can grow,” Kazadi said.The BBLK app is free for users and businesses.
