The vast majority of domestic terror events that have taken place in 2020 were conducted by white supremacist groups and other "like-minded extremists," according to a study by the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS).The CSIS, which describes itself as a "bipartisan, nonprofit policy research organization," added in its study that while there has also been an increase in terror plots conducted by "anarchist" or "anti-fascist" groups this year, they accounted for 20% of domestic terror plots. In addition, the group said the number of domestic terror incidents that have taken place in 2020 is "relatively small" compared to other periods in U.S. history. In all, the CSIS reports that 41 terrorist attacks and plots between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31 were connected to white supremacists, violent far-right groups and people who indentifty as "involuntary celibates," or "incels." Twelve attacks and plots were linked to far-left groups and anti-fascists (antifa). The think tank added that far-right groups and far-left groups were each responsible for one fatal attack in 2020.The CSIS added that left-wing and right-wing violence are often intertwined, creating a "security dilemma." Both sides have rushed to arm themselves, and the arms race "inadvertently threatens the other side.""Since it may be difficult for individuals to distinguish between offensive and defensive arms, even efforts by one side to protect itself may motivate others to arm, creating a spiral of actions that leads to violence," the CSIS said. The findings by the CSIS stand in contrast with past statements from President Donald Trump, who often conflates violence from white supremacists and other far-right groups with violence from far-left groups, like antifa.Following the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, in which a counter-protester was killed by the member of a far-right group, Trump said during a press conference that he thought there were "very fine people" on both sides of the conflict.During the first presidential debate, when he was asked to denounce the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, Trump told the group to "stand back and stand by." He followed that up by saying that political violence "is a left-wing problem."Trump formally denounced the group a few days later. 2322

The Special Counsel's Office is hoping to deny an attempt by several media organizations, including CNN, to unseal documents in the Russia probe, by arguing that the documents need to remain private because of the breadth of still-secret parts of the ongoing investigation."The Special Counsel's investigation is not a closed matter, but an ongoing criminal investigation with multiple lines of non-public inquiry. No right of public access exists to search warrant materials in an ongoing investigation," Robert Mueller's team wrote in a filing Wednesday night. The prosecutors wrote in the firmest language yet about how their yearlong investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election continues and includes several interconnected parts, some of which may link back to searches of the belongings of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort that were also used to build cases against him unrelated to his work for the campaign.Manafort faces criminal indictments in Virginia and DC federal courts related to his foreign lobbying business from before the campaign. He's pleaded not guilty in both.Prosecutors have previously revealed that the Justice Department directed Mueller to look into allegations that Manafort coordinated with Russians during the campaign, yet they have not previously hinted that others besides Manafort could be central to the Russia probe. Wednesday's court filing acknowledges multiple relationships that are part of investigative threads."The investigation consists of multiple lines of inquiry within the overall scope of the Special Counsel's authority. Many aspects of the investigation are factually and legally interconnected: they involve overlapping courses of conduct, relationships, and events, and they rely on similar sources, methods, and techniques. The investigation is not complete and its details remain non-public," prosecutors wrote. If they were to be unsealed, "warrant materials reveal investigative sources and methods, preliminary factual and legal theories, and evidence that has already been gathered -- including from grand jury processes. They show what has been searched -- including electronic facilities where the search itself is protected by a non-disclosure order -- and indicate what has not been searched. And the dates and volume of warrants reveal an investigation's direction."The Special Counsel's Office said it wouldn't oppose formally unsealing two search warrants that were made public through recent court filings in Manafort's case, though parts of them remain heavily redacted.CNN, along with The Associated Press, Politico, The Washington Post and The New York Times, initially asked the court to unseal all the search warrants used in the investigations and other sealed documents related to Manafort's two federal criminal cases. 2838

The walk to school turned terrifying for a Rochester, Michigan teen who says he was shot at after he stopped to ask for directions.Fourteen-year-old Brennan Walker missed the bus and tried to walk to school, but got lost after he couldn't remember the route. The freshman wasn't hit, as the shot missed him as he ran away. The situation began when Walker's alarm didn't go off. After missing his bus, he thought he could walk the roughly 4 miles to school.Once he became lost, he stopped at a home and knocked."I knocked on her door a few times and she came down yelling at me before I could say anything and she thought I was trying to break into her house," he said. "I was trying to explain to her that I wanted to get directions to go to my school. I told her no, I go to Rochester High I’m just looking for directions to Rochester High."Walker and his mother, Lisa, say the security video from the home shows the woman then yelled for her husband."The man of the house came down, pretty much just grabbed the shotgun to shoot at my son," says Lisa Walker."I saw it. I saw him holding it like this through the window and I guess I put my hand up, I don’t really remember, and I started to run," Brennan Walker says. "I looked back behind me I saw him aiming at me and I turned back. I turned back and I heard the gunshot. And I tried to run faster."The man has been taken into police custody."If someone is running from your house and chase them outside and shoot at them, you’re going to have criminal charges coming from us," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. Both Walker and his mother believe race was a factor in the incident."After watching the video and hearing the wife say 'why did these people choose my house' I knew it was racially motivated. I don't know what other these people she could possible have been talking about. He was by himself," Lisa Walker said."I didn’t want to believe that that type of stuff could happen here," said Brennan, who said he is just trying to process the shock of what happened."I don't, I don't know how you process getting shot at for asking for directions," he says. 2159

The sky is lovely, dark and deep. But these golfers in Hawaii have rounds to go before they sleep.Stunning photos taken at Hawaii's Big Island on Tuesday show golfers coolly hitting the links even as a monstrous ash plume looms behind them. The eruption of the Kilauea volcano has already destroyed houses, caused evacuations and threatened to wreak havoc on Hawaii's tourism industry. On Tuesday, a plume of ash from the volcano rose 12,000 feet into the air, dropping ash on sections of the island. The US Geological Survey issued a red alert on Tuesday warning of an imminent major eruption. But clearly, not everyone was so worried. 646
