When it comes to actually fixing her bike, however, she’s a little less confident.To help learn the tools of the trade, Onwuzuruoha comes to the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective on Wednesday evenings during WTF Night, a program offering a safe earning environment for women, transgenders and femmes. And the idea is to give those groups a safe place to work in.“Oh, I love it,” Onwuzuruoha says. “It’s a great place for women, trans, and femme folk to work and not feel intimidated or frustrated.”WTF night has been happening in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2002. Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective Workers say it’s now becoming a nationwide movement with more bike shops across the country hosting events geared towards helping these groups. “It lets women and those that have normally had a wrench torn out of their hand or have been degraded as, ‘Oh, I’ll do that for you,'--it really allows them to build confidence to be able to maintain their own bike,” says Kendra Davis, a Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective volunteer.Davis and her team say they are helping put the power back in the hands of people who may feel marginalized by men in bike shops. Sperling became famous in the 1980s for his ubiquitous commercials featuring before and after photos of his clients, ending with him proclaiming “I'm not only the Hair Club president but I'm also a client" as he showed a photo of his previously bald self. Governments are stepping up surveillance of airline passengers from central China and taking other steps to try to control the outbreak. Here’s what you should know about the illness:WHAT IS THE NEW VIRUS?Scientists have identified it as a new coronavirus. The name comes from the Latin word for crowns or halos, which coronaviruses resemble under a microscope. The coronavirus family has many types that affect people. Some cause the common cold while others originating in bats, camels and other animals have evolved into more severe illnesses such as SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — or MERS — Middle East respiratory syndrome.WHERE DID IT COME FROM?The first cases appeared last month in Wuhan, a city in central China’s Hubei province. Many of the first people infected had visited or worked at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, which has since been closed for an investigation. Chinese health officials say they believe the illness first spread from animals to people. They now say it can spread between people.HOW WIDESPREAD IS IT?China has identified 440 cases and nine deaths, most of the illnesses and all of the deaths in Hubei province. Cases have also been confirmed in Thailand, South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and Taiwan. The outbreak coincides with China’s busiest travel season as people visit their families or go abroad for the Lunar New Year holiday. That travel rush is expected to spread the disease more widely.WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?Common symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough and fever. Shortness of breath, chills and body aches are associated with more dangerous kinds of coronavirus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In serious cases, the virus can cause pneumonia.HOW IS IT TREATED?There is a test to identify the virus, but no vaccine to prevent an infection. House lawmakers have passed a bill that makes animal cruelty a federal felony.The so- called "PACT Act" specifically bans crushing, burning, drowning and impaling animals, among other things.It would also allow officials to go after suspected animal abusers who cross state lines.But according to its co-sponsor, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., it would also close a big loophole.His office says the bill would specifically ban animal cruelty recorded on video.Previous laws have de-legalized creating and selling those videos, but not the acts of cruelty in them.Another co-sponsor of the bill, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., says the legislation sends a clear message that our society does not accept animal cruelty.Violations of the bill could lead to prison for up to seven years. 796
