AKRON, N.Y. – 2020 has been a bit of roller coaster and for some, there's been more downs than ups.Before the pandemic, a roller coaster is exactly where you could find Eric Hall and his family. One summer day in 2019, something was getting in the way of his ride.“The guy did everything he could to get me in,” recalled Hall. “Which was not only super humiliating and humbling, but obviously at the same time it was very eye opening for me because something that I love to do, especially with my family, now my weight and my health was restricting me from doing that.”Hall knew he needed to change. But changing takes time, time he didn't think he had.“Prior to the pandemic, I was kind of hoping for more work from home, that's not necessarily what I had in mind was this,” said Hall.With an opportunity to be more healthy. Hall jumped on it. He insists he's not a paid spokesperson, but he swears by the app Centr. It's Chris Hemsworth's fitness app.“It wasn't like these like gargantuan bulky bodybuilders,” added Hall. “It was real people.”Hall weighed 330 pounds at his heaviest. Now, he weighs 165. He believes more time at home helped make that transformation a reality. Hall wants everyone to know losing weight can be done, just start slow.“It's not nearly as complicated as you think it is,” added Hall. Although many companies across the country are having a tough time staying open during the pandemic, there is some good news: The Small Business Association is finding some people are opening new types of businesses.Many of these new small businesses are being helped by loans, which the SBA said aren’t difficult to get currently."A lot of people are being entrepreneurs and they're coming up with new ideas so you see a lot of people making masks, you see people making shields, you see a lot for 3D printing businesses starting up. So that’s a great thing, that’s entrepreneurship. Whenever we’re given a problem, people come up with a solution," says Charles Abell with the U.S. Small Business Association.Abell says new tech companies are also thriving because it's a business that can be run remotely."You see so many new tech businesses starting up and that’s a great thing. There's a lot of need for medical tech, so people are coming up with new apps on how do we track our area with the COVID-19 virus," says Abell.He says it can be tough for some people who are finding themselves out of work and an expert in just one industry to suddenly pivot to another. The SBA says some are turning their hobbies into businesses."They have a great sauce or they have a great product that they can make at home and they can use Amazon and do the shipping services to market their products. So, I think a lot of people are being very experimental right now," says Abell.People who focus on delivery services are also finding business is booming. And many of these businesses are benefiting from easier access to loans."This is an amazing time right now. A lot of people are refinancing their homes and getting the lowest interest rate possible. Well, guess what, starting your business is a very similar process," says Abell.The key right now for people who are thinking of starting a brand new business is to think through your plan and funding needs. And make sure the business can thrive in the current state of our economy."It's good that they have a business plan and have someone helping them with the business plan to make sure it's sustainable," says Abell.The SBA has free tools available to potential, new and longtime business owners on their website. They encourage new business owners to use every resource available to them so that their brand new company can not only survive this pandemic but for many years after. 2436

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — One northern Kentucky family honored their lost wife and mother by paying it forward to brighten the morning of dozens of people.The Peters family celebrated what they called "Family Friday," where every Friday they put aside distractions and did something together."Our family began our Family Friday in the drive-thru at Dunkin'," 11-year-old Davis Peter said."Every Friday, especially when he was out of school, we would make sure we would enjoy time together as a family," Barry Peters, Davis' father, said. Then, in June, Laura Peters, Barry's wife and Davis' mom, died after going into cardiac arrest at 41 years old. "Since then we have learned to walk in a new normal," Barry said. Barry and Davis wanted to honor Laura, so they made a trip to Dunkin'.Laura "ran on Dunkin'," Davis said, getting coffee there at least four times a week. With that in mind, Davis and Barry did some math to figure out how much Laura would have spent at Dunkin' over six months."Since it's been six months, that would be four medium coffees a week at a piece for the last 26 weeks, equaling 8," Davis said. Barry and Davis then made a trip to Dunkin' with that money."I need you to take the 8; that's how much coffee she would have drank over the last six months," Davis said. "I need you to pay for everyone behind us until it runs out."Barry and Davis then watched from the parking lot as cars rolled up and ordered their morning cup of Joe."Every time somebody pulled up and we'd say, 'You're paid for,' everybody's mouth just fell," Amanda Jones, a shift leader at Dunkin', said. "Then when we told them why, what had happened, everybody was teary-eyed.""I don't remember one person who didn't honk their horn and be thankful," Davis said.
