SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fire Prevention Week arrives during what is typically a warm and dry month in San Diego County. Santa Ana winds can wreak havoc on dry brush, which is especially built up after last winter’s heavy rains. ReadySanDiego created a four-step process to help you prepare your family for a disaster. Make a Plan Survivors of the 2007 Cedar Fire had just minutes to escape flames right at their doors, leaving belongings behind. Experts say you should have items to get through three days independently, along with the family heirlooms you can’t replace. Creating a plan also involves a discussion with your family. You’ll want to determine a reunion location and practice evacuating over several routes. The County of San Diego created a form to help you. Learn more here.Build a Kit Do you know what you would need to get through the first 72 hours after a fire? In addition to basic supplies like medicine, cash, and flashlights, comfort items like blankets and earplugs could make an evacuation shelter more tolerable. You also need to remember items for your pets. See the full checklist here. Stay Informed Alert San Diego is the phone system to notify you of any emergency or disaster. You must register your cell phone, VoIP phone number, and email address. Landlines, whether listed or unlisted, are automatically part of the system and do not need to be registered. Sign up for Alert San Diego here.Get Involved The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) was created to help you keep others safe during a crisis. The course is an all-hazard training designed as a realistic approach to an emergency. Learn more here. 1648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Logan Heights say people are living in RVs parked on their street, leaving behind trash and at times, even dumping human waste. The piles of trash on Logan Avenue include bags, clothes, and paint or plastic food containers. Some of the RV trailers even have cobwebs. A city ordinance says cars are not allowed to park continuously on any public roadway for more than 72 hours. Homeowners say the vehicles are sometimes ticketed and moved for a few days before they come back. In June, the city opened a safe parking lot in Misison Valley for people living out of their RVs. Neighbors say the issue has been reported to the city's Get It Done app multiple times and they've even reached out to their council member, Vivian Moreno.10News reached out to Moreno's office, and a spokesperson said they've reported the issue to the San Diego Police Department. The spokesperson added that they would continue to report any complaints and violations to the appropriate authorities. 1017

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Do you know how to survive a rip current? The common occurrence at San Diego beaches accounts for 80 percent of all rescues, the U.S. Lifesaving Association reports. Rip currents are currents of water that flow out from shore, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers away from land, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 63 people in California died in rip currents between 1999 and 2013, second only to Florida in fatalities. You can greatly increase your chances of survival by swimming at a beach with lifeguards, the USLA says. The odds of drowning while swimming at a USLA-affiliated lifeguard protected beach is 1 in 18 million, the group claims.Anyone in the water - or thinking about getting into the water - should look for a gap of seemingly calm water between areas of breaking waves, a difference in water color, or a line of foam or debris moving out to sea. What to do if you’re caught in a rip current:*Don’t try to swim against the current*Swim parallel to the shoreline before trying to head back in to the beach*Float or tread water if the current circulates back toward the shore*If you can’t make it back to shore, yell and wave for helpLifeguards also encourage you to call 911 or get help from a professional. Many people have died trying to rescue rip current victims, NOAA experts say.Need more information? NOAA has an online training program called Break the Grip of the Rip. 1457

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded Tuesday afternoon after a brush fire broke out near Scripps Mercy Hospital Tuesday afternoon. According to fire crews, the fire broke near northbound SR-163 and Washington Street. At this time it's unclear what caused the fire. Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the area as passersby drove on the roadway.  381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hospital beds are filling up quickly with available capacity at zero in Southern California.ICE Nurse Peter Sidhu is overwhelmed. The Los Angeles County RN says their hospitals are on the brink of their limits.“We’re having an influx of patients like I’ve never seen before,” said Sidhu. “We’re running out of space. We’re converting any and every room into a patient room.”He feels more protected after getting the vaccine Thursday but says being short-staffed is a whole other threat. Sidhu also serves as treasurer for the UNAC/UHCP nurses union. He says hospitals have been facing systemic nursing shortages since the early 2000s.“You’ll be lucky to even get a restroom break. You’re on your feet, you’re running, patients are being intubated,” said Sidhu. “We don’t have enough staff. We didn’t have enough staff to take care of our patients before we had COVID.”California groups counties into five regions as part of the new stay-at-home order. On Thursday, the Southern California region available ICU capacity hit zero, even though availability for San Diego County is about 16%. That’s in part because other counties contribute to our region’s total. Inyo County only has two ICU beds open as of Dec. 18. Imperial County has no beds left.“You can open up empty wings, you can convert auditoriums, you can see what some places are doing which is parking structures and tents,” said Sidhu. “But, you can’t replace nurses.”While there are still some ICU beds open in San Diego, they’re filling up quickly. Scripps hospitals tells ABC 10News they’ve requested additional ventilators and respiratory therapists from the county.“We’ve constructed temporary negative pressure rooms, added surge tents at our emergency departments, and expanded COVID care to additional hospital floors,” said Scripps spokesperson Stephen Carpowich. For people who still aren’t being safe, Sidhu as this warning.“I’m looking at the kinds of patients that we have. They’re younger than I thought they would be. They’re healthier. And now they’re all suffering from COVID,” said Sidhu. The county says they’re holding off on some vital procedures like organ transplants and cancer surgeries in non-COVID patients to make more room. 2239
