SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Voting will look a little different this November. States are turning to stadiums, drive-thrus and possibly even movie theaters as safe options for in-person polling places amid the coronavirus pandemic and fears about mail-in ballots failing to arrive in time to count. The primary season brought voters to an outdoor wedding-style tent in Vermont and the state fairgrounds in Kentucky. The general election is expected to include polling places at NBA arenas nationwide as part of an agreement owners made with players to combat racial injustice. While a surge in mail-in voting is expected, some voters may feel more comfortable casting ballots in person following recent mail delays. 717

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A judge in San Diego ruled Thursday in favor of media outlets and ordered the unsealing of 17 search warrants containing details about a synagogue shooting in a San Diego suburb that killed one worshipper and injured three others, including the rabbi.Superior Court Presiding Judge Peter Deddeh said he will review the documents with prosecutors and redact the names of witnesses and investigators before releasing them next week.Deddeh said he saw no legal reason why the warrants should remain sealed. There were no objections by prosecutors or defense attorneys.Law enforcement obtained warrants to search the car, home and locations visited by suspect John T. Earnest.Police say the 19-year-old nursing student opened fire at Chabad of Poway on April 27 during a Passover service. He has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.Prosecutors have said the gunman fired at least eight rounds before he fumbled with his semiautomatic rifle and fled with 50 unused bullets. The search warrants could help answer questions including whether the suspect got a hunting license to be able to legally purchase the weapon since he is under 21.Lawyers representing the media outlets, including The Associated Press, have argued the documents should have been unsealed 10 days after investigators filed them in court.Other media involved in the request are San Diego outlets NBC 7, KFMB News 8, Fox 5 San Diego, and the San Diego Union-Tribune.Attorney Elizabeth Baldridge, representing the media, said unsealing the documents is important to ensure oversight of the judicial proceedings, especially in high-profile cases such as the synagogue shooting. She wrote in court filings that mass shootings and attacks motivated by religion and race have become common in the U.S., and the "public has a substantial interest in understanding the motivations behind these crimes and obtaining transparency in the process of bringing alleged perpetrators to justice."She added that unsealing the documents will also be "therapeutic" for families and the community. 2088

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old La Jolla man who was wearing a Jesus costume when he sucker-punched a San Diego police officer at a Gaslamp District Halloween street festival was sentenced Thursday to 270 days in jail, which will be served on weekends.Eric Van Vleet, who was arrested in Idaho's Cassia County four days after the Nov. 1, 2019, attack, pleaded guilty last year to a felony count of battery on a peace officer resulting in injury.San Diego County Superior Court Judge Melinda J. Lasater ordered that Van Vleet serve his time in county jail on 35 consecutive three-day weekends, totaling 105 days, with the rest of the time earned through custody credits. Lasater, who also imposed five years of probation, ordered that the jail term be re-evaluated and potentially modified after 15 weekends.RELATED: Man in Jesus Halloween costume accused of punching San Diego police officerDeputy District Attorney Will Hopkins said San Diego Police Officer Ben Hall and his partner, Kristen Robinson, witnessed a fight break out among several people outside the Atomic bar about 1 a.m.Hall pepper-sprayed the combatants, including one man, who punched his girlfriend after being blinded by the mace. When Robinson went to detain the man, with Hall assisting, Hopkins said Van Vleet -- who was dressed as Jesus Christ with devil horns -- yelled, "(Expletive) the police" and punched the lawman in the side of the head.He then walked away from the ruckus, disappearing into a crowd and getting into a ridesharing vehicle, and eventually left the state. According to the prosecution, surveillance footage and bar tabs helped investigators identify Van Vleet as the suspect.Hall was taken to a hospital for treatment of a roughly inch-long laceration and other trauma. The officer missed a week of work with post- concussion symptoms, according to Hopkins.Hall and Robinson called the incident "an ambush" at Van Vleet's sentencing hearing, and said it left them with doubts regarding what they could or should have done differently to safeguard themselves that night."I don't hold any grudges against you, but I believe in accountability," Hall told Van Vleet at the hearing. The officer said he hoped Van Vleet's sentence "shows that we're protected by the same laws we enforce."Van Vleet tearfully apologized to Hall, Robinson and a handful of other San Diego police officers in attendance."I don't want you guys to feel fear for doing what is your chosen calling, to protect the people," he said. "I'm more than willing to be accountable for my actions." 2563

San Diegans were reminded again this weekend that what was formerly known as Qualcomm Stadium is not the city's most glamorous place. The lights just turned off in the middle of San Diego State’s game winning drive against Stanford on Saturday. But the aging San Diego Stadium, as its currently known, appears to be primed for yet another new chapter - even as public officials debate how the site should be redeveloped.  San Diego County Credit Union, which already sponsors the Holiday bowl, is stepping up with 0,000 to place its name on the stadium until the end of next year.  But that's not all.  The credit union’s proposal to the City Council outlines plans to market the venue. The goal is to bring in even more events, including concerts, soccer games, weddings, birthday parties, fireworks, corporate softball, seminars and team building.  Its four key objectives are: Introduce, build and increase awareness of SDCCU StadiumPromote and Increase awareness and attendance of evnets atking place at SDCCU StadiumPosition SDCCU Stadium as the most desired venue in the city of San Diego host any and all types of eventsDrive additional revenue to the stadium. Isidro Cardenas, who enjoyed the tailgate scene at charger games, says he'd like more activity at the stadium “I’d like to see it used for the local sport avenue here in our San Diego County,” he said. “Whatever we can do to help along, so now that the Chargers are gone bring in more colleges to play there. The proposal also says the credit union would install five ATMs on site. The City Council will consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday.  A spokeswoman for the credit union said more details would be released if the city council approves the naming rights plan.   1810
