SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shopping trip in City Heights ended with a flurry of anti-gay slurs and a road rage assault. On Tuesday afternoon, Marco Aguirre spent an hour shopping, before heading back to his truck, parked in the 3700 block on University Avenue."I back out and lightly bump the car behind me," said Aguirre, 49.Aguirre says he saw two men emerge from an older-model, red sedan. Aguirre apologized, offering to show his insurance, but the men were agitated."The driver came on my side and the passenger came on the other side. Both of them were screaming," said Aguirre. With his cellphone, Aguirre, who is openly gay, capturing the profanities, including a string of anti-gay slurs. Aguirre was frozen. "I feel terrible. Panicked," said Aguirre. He says the slurs continued for about 15 minutes, before he decided to get out of the car to assess the damage."I see no damage to my truck and no damage to their vehicle," said Aguirre. Aguirre says when he stepped onto the sidewalk, he was attacked."One of the guys grabbed my phone and smashed it into the sidewalk. The same guy punched me in the face, under my left eye," said Aguirre. Aguirre says the two men got in the car and took off, leaving him with swelling under his left eye. The incident also left him determined to find the two men."It's not right. I need to take a stand. This is my neighborhood, and I don't want to feel threatened in my own neighborhood," said Aguirre.Aguirre says he actually recorded the entire episode up until the phone was damaged, but only a minute or so ended up in the cloud.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1654

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Amid coronavirus fears, retailers in San Diego County and around the world are trimming operating hours to focus on cleaning and restocking. Some stores are even closing until further notice. The shopping frenzy continues as residents prepare to hunker down for weeks at a time. Many not being able to get essentials they so desperately need. "All the toilet papers were gone, and they were limiting the number to one per client," shopper Midori Kato said. Some said they found a way to bypass the chaotic crowds. "Because I live close, like 300 feet from Ralphs, I finally figured out to go at 11:30 or midnight," one man told 10News. But not anymore. Many grocery stores announced they are shortening their operating hours. Von's supermarkets are now open from 7 am to 9 pm. Ralph's parent company, Kroger, announced nationwide, that they will only be open from 8 am to 8 pm to focus on deep cleaning and restocking shelves. Trader Joe's stores began limiting the number of shoppers in their stores. Starting Monday, they will only be open from 9 am to 7 pm. Some shoppers said, instead of rushing into stores and hoarding up supplies, we need to work together. If you have to have a loaf of bread, and your neighbor doesn't have any, give them half," shopper Gloria Mitrovich said. But some companies are not taking any chances and have decided to close their stores entirely. Effective immediately, Apple announced that its retail stores would be closed until March 27, 2020. Nike said beginning Monday, all retail stores outside of Asia would be shut down, also until March 27, 2020. The apparel company, Urban Outfitters, closed all of its stores globally until at least March 28, 2020. They said employees would continue to be paid during the shutdown. However, all three companies said their online stores would remain open. 1861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. Campa-Najjar chose Bolland.RELATED: In-Depth: How the Electoral College works"He called me and said, 'hey you want to do this,' I’m like, 'you mean the Electoral College the thing that everyone hates? Sure let's do it,'" said Bolland.Bolland said he’ll be flying to Sacramento on Dec. 14 to cast his vote. That vote, however, can only be for one person."I don’t even have any choice about who to vote for because California, like 48 states, is a winner-take-all state. So Biden won California, I’ll be casting my vote for Biden regardless of what my political views are," said Bolland. He added that he’s honored to be chosen in such a historic role, but acknowledges the flaws in the Electoral College system."Politically, I’ve had my concerns and questions about the Electoral College. It’s fundamentally anti-democratic," he said. The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers in 1787. They wanted to find a balance between giving too much power to the people with a simple popular vote, without giving all of the power to Congress. The Electoral College was their solution.Bolland points out that it makes some votes useless.“Last night, Joe Biden won by like 60 something percent and Trump lost by 30 something percent. But that’s a lot of people in California who voted for Trump and with the Electoral College they get erased,” he said, adding that there are Biden votes that get erased in right-leaning states as well. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego researcher is looking into whether social media affects the teenage brain the same way as marijuana.Dr. Kara Bagot, a child psychiatrist and assistant professor at the University of California San Diego, believes her findings could change how medical professionals view adolescents' usage of various social media. “Kids keep using social media even in the face of negative consequences,” said Dr. Bagot, “and that’s what we see with drug usage as well.” Bagot’s team will scan 60 teens’ brains as they look at images from social media and then pictures of marijuana. “No one will be smoking for this study,” added Bagot, “we’re not that progressive.” They are still compiling results and recruiting more teenagers for the study, but anticipate having it complete by summer. The study is a part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) initiative, a nationwide effort tracking more than 12,000 children across a decade. 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Australian national and his Long Beach business partner are accused of siphoning more than million from the State of California in a years-long charter school scheme. According to the San Diego District Attorney, the pair sought out small school districts with limited experience in oversight and proposed they start online charter schools to earn more public funds. Sean McManus, 46, and Jason Schrock, 44, the CEO and president of A3 Education, along with nine other people named in the case have been indicted in San Diego County. Criminal counts include conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds, paying for student information and conflict of interest.A year-long investigation uncovered a massive scheme in which McManus and Schrock told subordinates and co-defendants to open a total of 19 charter schools in both San Diego County and statewide, according to the DA. McManus is charged with 64 counts and is facing more than 40 years in prison if convicted. Schrock is charged with 62 counts and also faces more than 40 years in prison, Stephan said. On top of creating the charter schools, both McManus and Schrock are accused of running another scam that paid athletic organizations for student information. The pair reportedly paid pre-existing youth programs as little as per student for enrollment documentation and would then enroll the students into a charter school during the summer, collecting roughly ,000 per student from the state. McManus and Schrock are then accused of transferring more than million in public charter school funds into companies the pair own or control. Instead of spending the money on education, once the money was in private bank accounts, both men are accused of using the funds for themselves and their families. According to authorities, McManus and Schrock used the money to invest in startup companies, real estate, and wired money directly to themselves or family members. Most of the money obtained from the state ended up in the pockets of McManus and Schrock, the District Attorney's office said. San Diego's District Attorney held a news conference Wednesday morning.
