BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

ZURICH, Switzerland, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Doris Leuthard, president of the Swiss Confederation, held talks on Sunday and agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), delivered Chinese President Hu Jintao's regards to Leuthard. He said China will work together with Switzerland to push forward the Sino-Swiss ties.The Chinese and Swiss economies are highly complementary and have large potential in economic cooperation, said Wu. Dig deep for the violators behind them, seize evidence and give a hard blow to online football gambling," urged vice minister Huang Ming at a meeting Tuesday.Figures from the ministry show that Chinese police shut down 1,461 foreign gambling web sites in less than one week after the start of the 2010 World Cup."Gambling, drugs and prostitution are still rampant in some areas, causing civilians to issue strong complaints... BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday expressed their condolences to the families of the eight Hong Kong tourists killed in a hostage crisis in the Philippines.In a joint letter to Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Hu and Wen expressed their deep sorrow for the families of those killed and consolation for the injured."We are in grave shock and grief on hearing that eight Hong Kong compatriots fell and many others were injured in the Manila hostage incident," the letter said."We hereby express our grave condolences and our deep sympathy to the families of the Hong Kong compatriots, and we hope the injured will recover soon," the letter said.Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday also expressed his condolences in a letter to Tsang.Eight Hong Kong tourists were confirmed dead and seven injured, two seriously, in Monday's incident in Manila, an official of Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said Tuesday.The coachload of Hong Kong tourists were held hostage for more than 10 hours by a former policeman who was protesting his dismissal before police commandos stormed the vehicle.
