WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said on Monday that China will continue to cooperate with other countries to cope with the current financial crisis.     "For the international community, the most urgent task is to join efforts to stem further deterioration and spread of the crisis -- the major threat to global growth -- and restore global economic and financial stability," said Yi Gang, vice governor of the People's Bank of China     "China will continue to strengthen its cooperation with concerned countries and hopes that all governments will work together to overcome the current difficulties and restore international financial stability," he said in a statement at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.     He urged the two Bretton Woods Institutions to "fulfill their mandates to maintain global monetary and financial stability and facilitate sustainable, balanced growth."     The fund should give the surveillance priority to the ongoing financial turmoil, deepen its analysis, learn lessons, and listen to the opinions of member countries, said the senior official of China's central bank.     "From the medium- and long-term perspective, the fund must address the inherent deficiencies of the current international monetary system and foster an international financial architecture adaptive to the evolving global economy and financial markets," he noted.     As the largest multilateral development institution, the World Bank should re-assess the challenges confronting the developing countries -- soaring food and fuel prices, higher financing costs, deteriorating balance of payments positions, and mounting inflationary pressures, said Yi Gang.     "With the advantages of its financing capacity and expertise, the World Bank should urge the developed countries to shoulder their due responsibilities in stabilizing the global economy through targeted measures, carried out in an even-handed and professional fashion," he said.     Yi Gang also stressed the fundamentals of the Chinese economy are "solid and resilient."     "We are confident we can weather the financial turmoil," he said. "With the global economic slowdown, it is important that China maintains its stable and relatively rapid growth." 

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to domestic athletes busy training for the upcoming Olympic Games, saying he was looking forward to their good performances.     With 16 days to go until the Games opening ceremony, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the stadiums of the Training Bureau of the General Administration of Sport in southern Beijing in the morning. He watched training programs of athletes in gymnastics artistic, synchronized swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, basketball and volleyball. He voiced concerns for star player Yao Ming who suffered a foot injury in February.     "The whole nation is very concerned about your foot. How is it going now?" Hu asked the star center with the Houston Rockets.     "It's okay," Yao replied. The NBA star played his second match after coming back from injury on Saturday in the eastern city of Hangzhou, scoring 16 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes against Angola.     Hu told Yao he needed to be more careful in future training and matches.     He expressed high hopes for the men's national basketball team, which also includes NBA stars Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian.     "We Chinese people pay lots of attention to basketball and expect your superb performance in matches. I hope you can show your best at the Games," Hu told them.     At the swimming stadium, Hu watched the performance of synchronized swimmers and extended gratitude to head coach Masayo Imura from Japan.     "We are here today to give a boost to your spirits," Hu told the swimmers. "We are happy to learn that you have improved rapidly under the guidance of head coach Masayo Imura. I propose that we give a big applause to her to express our sincere thanks."     The 58-year-old coach, dubbed the "godmother" of Japanese synchronized swimming, started coaching her country's synchronized swim team in 1978. She helped her swimmers to eight Olympic medals over the past 30 years.     Imura started coaching in China after the 2006 Doha Asian Games in which China dethroned long-time Asian champion Japan in both the duet and team competitions.     Last month, she reiterated her hopes for medals at the Beijing Olympics, saying Chinese swimmers would help present a modern and dynamic China with their performance.     Hu praised Imura for her coaching and role in promoting sports exchanges and friendship between China and Japan.     "I believe that China's synchronized swimming team will give an outstanding performance at the Games under the guidance of Ms. Masayo Imura."     Imura pledged she would do her utmost to lead China's team to achieve good results.     At the table tennis stadium, Hu urged on the players from a sport that China has dominated, winning 16 Olympic gold medals over the years. On the team are such top players as Wang Nan and Zhang Yining.     "I hope you can have more exchanges with athletes from other countries and regions to work together for boosting the development of table tennis in the world," he said.     "I'm looking forward to your good news."     Hu also visited the weightlifting athletes and women's volleyball players.     Athens Games weightlifting gold medal winner Chen Yanqing told the president "Just watch me at the Games!" While Feng Kun, captain of the national women's volleyball team, told Hu: "We will repay the motherland and the people with the best results."     Chinese athletes have qualified to compete in all 262 events within the 28 Olympic sports, marking the first time that the country's athletes are represented across the board at an Olympics. The Chinese national delegation at the Beijing Games will also be the largest in the country's Olympic history.     At the training venues on Wednesday, Hu also visited the athletes' dining hall and rehabilitation center, urging the cooks to continue to prepare delicious meals and the doctors to provide thoughtful services.     He also voiced strong support for anti-doping.     "Anti-doping is a precondition for hosting a successful Games," he said after signing his name on a scroll for anti-doping. "As the host nation, China is obliged to set a good example in this regard."     "We must ensure the Chinese delegation attend the Games cleanly and make positive contributions to safeguard the purity of the Olympics."     Apart from boosting morale of the country's athletes, the president had shown concerns for the preparatory work at Olympic venues.     During a visit to the eastern city of Qingdao on Sunday, the venue of the Olympic sailing event, Hu highly praised the use of renewable energy and environment-friendly material in the buildings of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center. He urged the center staff to make greater efforts for the preparations.     Starting in mid-June, the coast of Qingdao was coated with a vast algae coming from the Yellow Sea. A bright green covering of algae smothered beaches and extended out several hundred meters. It once covered 32 percent of the sailing venue at the peak of the outbreak.     Hu expressed satisfaction with the efforts Qingdao had made to clean the seawater and make it qualified for the sailing event, and urged local authorities to continue to keep alert.     He also encouraged Chinese athletes to achieve good results and voiced sincere welcome for foreign athletes.     "The Chinese people are showing their warm welcome to athletes from all over the world. We will do our best to provide good service for you," he told some foreign athletes who were training at the center.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with Bill Gates, chairman of Bill & Gates Foundation, to discuss issues concerning development and poverty alleviation.     During their talks on the sidelines of the a high-level U.N. meeting for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Wen expressed appreciation over Gates' long-term efforts for promoting settlement of issues concerning development.     The current turbulence in the international economic and financial situation, sharp increases in oil prices and food supplyshortage have made things more difficult for poor countries, Wen said. BEIJING, June 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner announced Thursday night the country will raise the prices of gasoline, diesel oil, aviation kerosene and electricity, revealing an unprecedented broad plan to raise energy prices.     Beginning Friday, the benchmark gasoline and diesel oil retail prices will be marked up by 1,000 yuan (144.9 U.S. dollars) per tonne, with the price of aviation kerosene up by 1,500 yuan per tonne.     The prices of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, however, would be left unchanged, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).     The benchmark retail prices of gasoline and diesel oil would be lifted to 6,980 yuan and 6,520 yuan per tonne, up more than 16 percent and 18 percent respectively.     The price rises also translate into mark-ups of 0.8 yuan and 0.92 yuan per liter, the measurement used at service stations in China, for gasoline and diesel oil respectively.     The commission said the oil price adjustment was made to ensure supplies in the country by diminishing the gap between continuously rising international crude prices, especially since February, and state-set domestic oil prices.     Crude oil price on the international market reached above 136 U.S. dollars per barrel on Wednesday, up more than 45 percent from the price when the country raised oil prices in November last year. An employee changes the cards showing the prices of refined oil at a gas station in Beijing on the early morning of June 20, 2008The government-controlled oil prices on domestic market should be blamed for a shortfall of supplies, as some refineries stopped or cut back on processing to avoid losses, said an unidentified NDRC official.     The commission said more subsidies would be offered to farmers, public transport, low-income families and taxi drivers to cushion the crunch of price rises.     For instance, farmers would get five yuan per mu (1/15 hectare)of farmland in extra subsidy; low-income families in cities would get an extra 15 yuan for each person every month starting from July, 10 yuan for such rural families.     The commission said fares for passenger travel by rail, urban and rural public transport and taxis would remain unchanged after the rise.     The official did not comment on the impact of oil price rises on the inflation rate, which eased to 7.7 percent in May. In April, it rose 8.5 percent after a 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     The commission also said the average electricity tariff will be raised by 2.5 cents per kwh starting from July 1, up 4.7 percent on average.     It said the price rise was made in response to rising costs of the country's power plants, including rising power-coal prices, increased costs on desulphuration facilities and investment in grid upgrading.     More than 80 percent of all the power generation companies suffered losses in the January-May period due to power-coal price rises.     Official statistics showed that power coal prices went up by more than 80 yuan per tonne in the past two years. The prices had gone up by 60 yuan since the beginning of the year.     The commission also announced the country would exercise temporary price intervention on power coal as of Dec. 31, and power coal prices are capped below the price on June 19.     The policy was adopted as the commission expected the power-coal price to rise further because of the gap between domestic and international prices and tight supplies.     The commission also said urban and rural residents and sectors of farming and fertilizer production, as well as the quake-hit provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu, will be exempt from the price rise.     Industrial and commercial undertakings, however, would only see limited impact, as power expenses usually account for a small portion of their total costs, it said.     "The price rise in electricity would not have a fundamental impact on the country's inflation rate," said the NDRC official.

They should work more closely on economy, trade, investment, energy, environment and high-tech.     He also urged the United States to observe the three joint communiques, refrain from anything harmful to bilateral ties and the stability of the Taiwan Straits, so as to ensure the sound and steady progress of bilateral constructive cooperation.     As all nations were becoming more connected, Hagel, a Republican senator from Nebraska, said the stronger cooperation between the United States and China would help ensure world financial and economic stability.
