SAN DIEGO — The main stretch of Avenida de la Playa in the La Jolla Shores area is closing to vehicles through September so restaurants can set up tables out on the asphalt.Restaurants began setting up Wednesday for the outdoor service, which will run through Sept. 27. The change comes in response to a new round of Coronavirus related restrictions that make it illegal for restaurant to serve food indoors. Avenida de la Playa will close to cars from El Paseo Grande to Calle de la Plata. Restaurants will be setting up in the part of the street that was reserved for parking spaces. There will be a 20-foot wide walkway down the center of the road for pedestrians to pass. The move will allow restaurants that lost capacity due to restrictions a chance to add tables. Piatti, for instance, will get 16 additional tables by moving outside, creating 35 new shifts for its workers."I've been here 29 years and I've been able to tell people I'll have something in an hour, I'll be able to seat you in 90 minutes. Those are extreme wait times. and now I'm actually saying for the first time ever, I don't have anything tonight," said Piatti General Manager Tom Spano. 'Hearing the word 'no' is something you've got to get used to when you're trying to make it in life."Ganaway says the afternoon was busy as people lined up for his signature service. It was the first day operating under new state rules for haircuts to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus. The rules allowed hair stylists to operate outdoors, or under shaded coverings that allow normal airflow. The rules also restrict the kinds of services that can be conducted outdoors, including eliminating big money makers like coloring services. For some salons, that's a deal breaker and they'd rather just stay closed."It's business suicide for our industry," said Corinne Lam, who decided not to reopen Salotto Salon in Rancho Bernardo. SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of best friends who met while studying at Utah Valley University are taking a long, unique journey to deliver a message of peace.James Alan Thompson of Sandy and his friend Paul T. Chavez are walking across the United States.Their journey began on June 24 in San Francisco. They hope to complete the 3,000-mile journey in Washington, D.C., by December.They were inspired to make the trek after seeing civil unrest and protests erupt across the country.“What is it we can do to make an impact, instead of just complaining about what’s going on,” Thompson said. “Talk to people in person and talk to them about how they have received kindness in their lives."The friends hope that by connecting with individuals from all walks of life and from all over the country, they can show there is much more that unites people than divides.“It’s touching one life at a time, one day at a time,” Chavez said. “We are opening up a space for this conversation about peace.”“There are good people in this country. This country is not as divided as some think it is,” Thompson said.Thompson and Chavez are walking about 20 miles per day. They expect to pass through Utah sometime in August.“Once we reach Salt Lake City we will do a day of kindness where we bring people together. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The United States Attorney’s Office is asking anyone who might have gotten their immigration paperwork “lost” in the mail to please give them a call.Federal prosecutors have contacted 181 potential victims whose documents may have actually been intentionally destroyed by a former United States Postal Service employee in Salt Lake City.Special agents with the USPS identified the suspect as 77-year-old Diana Molyneux from West Jordan.Many of the victims were legal immigrants residing in Utah and Nevada who were waiting for their Permanent Resident Card, commonly referred to as a Green Card.“I pray for her. I really do,” said Eloisa Mendoza, the proprietor of Elko Hispanic Services. “I personally think she knew what was in those envelopes.”Mendoza told KSTU she worked with approximately 60 victims in Elko, Nevada. Whenever a client’s mail had a tracking number, Mendoza said it seemed like the documents always got stuck in Salt Lake City.“It’s really difficult for me to understand why (the suspect) would do something like that,” Mendoza said. “Issues. Personal issues… I do not know her, so I really cannot say if she’s racist or not. To me, I think her issue was just ‘aliens.’”According to Mendoza, some of the victims lost their jobs due to the inability to provide proof of legal residency in the United States. Others had to pay more than ,000 in fees.Mendoza said although most of the victims were Hispanic, some were from Russia and the Philippines.“The emotional suffering they went through is very harsh,” Mendoza said. “I saw the emotion, the stress, the nightmare that these people went through. Sometimes I think, ‘Did she ever think of that?’ What was she doing to the lives of these people?”Mendoza credited the office of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto for helping fix the issues for Nevada residents.When KSTU tried to reach Molyneux for comment at her home in West Jordan, she did not answer the door. According to federal documents, she has been unemployed since losing her job with USPS.Assistant Federal Defender Wendy Lewis, now the sixth defense attorney to represent Molyneux, did not immediately return KSTU’s calls.According to a handwritten letter filed earlier this year, Molyneux asked for and was granted a new attorney, accusing Assistant Federal Defender Carlos A. Garcia of having a “conflict of interest” because the victims were “his people.”“I WAS APPOINTED ATTOREY (sic) GARCIA,” she wrote. “ENGLISH IS ATTORNEY’S SECOND LANGUAGE AND I AM HAVING A HARD TIME COMMUNICATING WITH HIM.
