NEW YORK (AP) — As monuments, statues, and memorials around the world come under increased scrutiny, some former Most Valuable Players in Major League Baseball are saying they'd like to see a change in future MVP plaques. The trophy is engraved with the name of Kenesaw Mountain Landis in large letters. Landis was baseball's first commissioner and there were no Black players in the majors during his reign from 1920 until his death in 1944. His name has been on every American League and National League MVP plaque since then. Barry Larkin, Terry Pendleton, and Mike Schmidt say they'd like to see it pulled off. 621

NEW YORK (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric says its equipment may have ignited the 2018 Camp Fire, which killed 86 people and destroyed an entire town in Northern California. The embattled utility, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, said Thursday it's taking a .5 billion charge for claims connected to the Camp Fire in its fourth quarter earnings. The cause of the Camp Fire, the deadliest in California history, is still under investigation. But firefighters located the start of the fire near a tower on PG&E's Caribou-Palermo transmission line. PG&E says that transmission line lost power right before the fire and was later found to be damaged."We recognize that more must be done to adapt to and address the increasing threat of wildfires and extreme weather in order to keep our customers and communities safe," said John Simon, interim CEO of PG&E, in a statement. "We are taking action now on important safety and maintenance measures identified through our accelerated and enhanced safety inspections and will continue to keep our regulators, customers and investors informed of our efforts."PG&E also recorded a new billion charge related to the 2017 wildfires in Northern California, saying it still estimates it is facing wildfire liabilities in excess of billion.Citing extraordinary challenges from wildfires, PG&E's management concluded the circumstances "raise substantial doubt about PG&E Corporation's and the Utility's ability to continue as going concerns."PG&E also said there was an outage and downed wires in another location, called Big Bend, that morning. While fire officials have identified the second location as another potential ignition point of the Camp Fire, PG&E said it's unsure if that problem might have ignited the fire. The Caribou-Palermo transmission line has been out of service since mid-December, and inspections have identified equipment that needs repair or replacement, the company said. 1997

NEW YORK CITY — Not all New York City public schools will begin their in-person instruction Monday as originally planned, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Thursday."For months, teachers, principals and school staff have been working hard to make sure our students have the education they deserve while putting health and safety first," de Blasio said. The announcement came as educators have raised concerns over safety measures in school buildings and lack of preparedness. The mayor said he has talked with school officials about different types of school buildings and their levels of readiness and decided to develop an updated approach with several phases for resuming in-person learning.Beginning Monday,3-K, Pre-K and District 75 schools will reopenSept. 29: K-5 and K-8 schools will openOct. 1: Middle and high schools will reopenAll students in full remote programs will continue as planned, starting full-day instruction on Sept. 21."Our students, staff, and families have demonstrated tremendous resilience over the last six months, and we're going to continue to build on all the work we've done as we move forward," Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza said. "We are giving our schools more staff, more time, and more support to have the strongest possible start to the most unprecedented school year."The mayor also announced another 2,500 educators will be deployed to New York City schools in addition the 2,000 added earlier this week. The 4,500 total is still short of the 10,000 more staff requested by city schools. Those educators are expected to assist in in-person learning in schools to make sure that all students have a rigorous learning experience in a safe, healthy environment. President of the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators Mark Cannizzaro said the additional teachers would fulfill staffing needs at 3-K, Pre-K, District 75, K-5 and K-8 schools. The Department of Education continues to work with middle and high schools to establish their needs for additional staffing, de Blasio said. When asked what was "the straw that broke the camel's back," de Blasio, Cannizzaro and United Federation of Teachers Pres. Michael Mulgrew said school staffing shortages had not been resolved enough to have all school buildings safely reopen.Mulgrew also said it became apparent a "snow day scenario," where a large amount of students would be placed into a room with a teacher, cannot be used during the pandemic. He also acknowledged staffing issues have been raised for weeks, and they have been addressing the concerns and monitoring, but as teachers returned to schools, "that was when we noticed the huge need for more educators." 2672

NEW YORK CITY — An Arizona man is dead after jumping out of a freezer at a New York City restaurant and charging at an employee with a knife.Police identified the man as 54-year-old Carlton Henderson of Cave Creek, Arizona.Police say on Sunday an employee at Sarabeth's restaurant in New York City opened the freezer door, and Henderson allegedly ran out screaming, "Away from me, Satan!"The restaurant worker was able to calm the man down but the man went into cardiac arrest and later died at an Upper West Side hospital. No one else in the eatery was injured.  585

NORFOLK, Va. - The first presidential debate of 2020 was all some voters needed to watch before heading to the polls.“[I] tuned into most of the debate last night, and that really solidified my decision to vote today,” said William Jimenez. But the thought of this year’s election is nerve-wracking for some voters.“Regardless of political persuasion and who you intend to vote for, people across the political spectrum are all experiencing that kind of stress,” said Gary Roftus, the director of Fairfield Psychological Associates.Jimenez says this election is important.“A lot is on the line. A lot is at stake,” he adds.Election stress - according to the American Psychological Association, it’s affecting more than 50% of Americans.Gabrielle Harrell felt the pressure at the polls Wednesday.“It’s been very stressful. As I was filling out the ballot, I was triple-checking to make sure I’m checking the right box,” Harrell said.Roftus says people are already stressed with the coronavirus.“We’ve never had an election where we are told is the most important election ever in the middle of a pandemic,” he adds.As we get closer to November 3, Roftus says politics comes up in his counseling sessions.“Inadvertently or directly because it's bothering them, people are bringing up the election all the time,” he adds.Roftus says the additional voting options are affecting stress levels.“Sometimes some people are uncertain as to where they should vote, whether they should vote by mail, is their ballot going to be accepted?"For people who want to get rid of some of that election stress, voting early is an option.Roftus says it gives some people some comfort and relief. Some voters agree.“I do feel better having done it,” Harrell adds.Experts say it’s also best to take a break from politics if you can, but most importantly, take care of yourself.“Try to get enough rest and eat properly,” said Roftus. This story was first reported by Nana-Séntuo Bonsu at WTKR Norfolk, Virginia. 1993
