SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled a traffic stop in Encanto Tuesday led officers on a 40-minute pursuit that ended with his arrest near Lake Hodges, authorities reported.The man refused to yield when San Diego police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in the 6800 block of Akins Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., SDPD public-affairs Officer Michael Stirk said.The motorist drove off to the east toward Spring Valley, then entered state Route 125 and headed north, Stirk said.Reaching Santee, the man entered SR-52 and headed west, then merged onto northbound Interstate 15 when he got to the Miramar area.While passing through northern San Diego with SDPD and California Highway Patrol personnel tailing him and tracking his pursuit aboard a police helicopter, the driver managed to avoid running over several spike strips that CHP officers hurled onto the roadway in his path.After entering Escondido, however, the man finally pulled to a stop on the side of the freeway near Ninth Avenue and was taken into custody without further incident about 9:45 a.m., Stirk said.The arrestee's name was not immediately available. 1139

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego physician already facing a federal mail fraud charge for allegedly selling a false COVID-19 cure has been indicted on new charges of impersonating one of his employees to obtain hydroxychloroquine, making false statements to investigators and importing what he believed was hydroxychloroquine smuggled out of China, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.Dr. Jennings Ryan Staley, 44, who formerly operated Skinny Beach Med Spas in and around San Diego, was indicted on the latest charges Wednesday by a federal grand jury. In addition to mail fraud, he's now charged in a superseding indictment with importation contrary to law, making false statements, and aggravated identity theft.Staley was originally charged earlier this year for allegedly marketing and selling pricey "COVID-19 treatment packs," described as a "concierge medicine experience" priced as high as ,995 for a family of four. Prosecutors allege he paid roughly per tablet of hydroxychloroquine included in the kits.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Staley's marketing materials stated customers should "NOT BELIEVE THE REPORTS THAT HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE DOESN'T WORK!" and he allegedly told an undercover FBI agent who posed as a customer that the purported treatment was a "magic bullet" and a "miracle cure."When asked whether the treatment kit would cure someone infected with COVID-19, he allegedly said, "One hundred percent," but later denied ever making the claim.The U.S. Attorney's Office alleges he tried to solicit investments for his COVID-19 cure venture, telling one customer and prospective investor that he sought a ,000 minimum investment and aimed to raise 0,000 total. He allegedly promised the customer that she would be repaid "triple your money in 90 days."Prosecutors allege Staley obtained hydroxychloroquine pills in several ways, including by soliciting them from acquaintances and employees with preexisting hydroxychloroquine prescriptions, and writing prescriptions for immediate family members and acquaintances to get the drugs "by any means necessary."He allegedly wrote a fake hydroxychloroquine prescription using the name, date of birth and prior home address of one of his employees, and took the prescription to multiple pharmacies in an attempt to obtain the drug. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.''
