We're all familiar by now with the student walkouts in solidarity against gun violence. It's one way they've united in one voice to try to make a difference.  But some students are using art, and billboards, to send a message of their own.           For Yoki Ogbai, the overalls she's painting are more than a school project"Our colors are red and white," Ogbai said. "So a lot of wings a lot of bows glitter all types of crazy.The overalls are her latest work of art."Art for me is like a big sense of release," Ogbai said.Born in East Africa, she used art as expression when she moved to the U.S and a way for people to see her for who she is."A lot of times people don't really try to understand and don't really try to get to know a person before creating their onw ways," Ogbai said.  "Their own idea of who you are."So when she heard about a contest called the "Healing As One" campaign, she figured it would be an opportunity to inspire thousands to take a look at things in a different way."Cause he's kind of taking a picture and was like through the lens," Ogbai said.That idea grew into a billboard on a busy intersection that reads, "See Me, I Am Denver.""To be seen is to be acknowledged for everything you are and not for what you're expected to be," Ogbai says.Ogbai's billboard is just one of several in the Healing As One initiative. The topics are timely. One reads education not deportation. And others, encourage people to have courage and hope.Albany Reynolds designed the hope billboard."For me it's amazing because I've always been someone who wanted to speak out about issues like that," Reynolds said.  "And just bring attention to that."She placed the word over a picture she took of her classmate Kelly."It's giving us leeway to have artistic freedom and to put our ideas out there," Reynolds said. "And to say I want to represent hope and to have that on an actual billboard it's a good opportunity."In a time with young people across the country speaking out about the issues important to them, this group believes doing that through art can be just as powerful."If you look at any big historical changes throughout history art has been a very big part of that," Reynolds said."Even though I am just another person using my voice and what I know what I can do I really am able to make some sort of impact in someone’s life," Ogbai said.Inspiring change through billboards, advertising messages of a different kind. 2526

WAYNE COUNTY — Four children were killed when a semi struck a car that was slowing in a construction zone on an Indiana interstate Thursday evening.It happened shortly after 5 p.m. on eastbound I-70 in Wayne County, about 70 miles east of Indianapolis.According to Indiana State Police, troopers arrived to find a Chevrolet car and a semi pulling a box trailer both on fire, just west of a construction zone.State police investigators believe the truck did not slow down when it came upon slowed traffic near the construction zone and slammed into the back of a car, pushing it into another semi.Witnesses told the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that the driver of the semi that struck the car from behind was operating in an "erratic manner" prior to the crash. Investigators say evidence revealed that stopped traffic was not a contributing factor to the crash.Preliminary toxicology reports indicated that the driver had multiple drugs in his system at the time of the crash. He was arrested and lodged into the Wayne County Jail on the following preliminary charges:Four counts of reckless homicideFour counts of operating while intoxicated causing deathOperating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injuryIndiana State Police say a passerby was able to pull the driver of the passenger car out of the vehicle, but none of his passengers.State police say four children inside the vehicle were all pronounced dead at the scene. He escaped his burning truck and was taken to a hospital in Richmond. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Inside one Washington D.C. bicycle repair shop is a cacophony of sounds, where both the bicycles and employees get a chance they may not have otherwise.“Working with your hands is still very important,” said Keith Jackson, operations manager at Gearin’ Up Bicycles.The nonprofit trains Black teens about everything it takes to run a bike shop.“For a lot of the young Black youth, this is really their only opportunity to get their feet wet in a bicycle business,” Jackson said.It’s an opportunity Daiquan Medley knows firsthand.“I’ve been here a long time now,” he said.Medley started coming to Gearin’ Up Bicycles several years ago, eventually working his way up to youth shop manager. It is quite a journey for someone who didn’t take to bicycling right away.“I couldn’t ride at first,” he said.Eventually, though, Medley picked it up and now envisions a future full of bicycles.“I would still have a full-service bike shop,” Medley said, “but then also have programs within it to actually still be able to teach people and they can learn how to maintain their bike on their own.”It’s an inspiration drawn from Gearin’ Up Bicycles, which helps young people build their own bicycles to keep and teaches them how to fix donated bikes that otherwise may have ended up in a landfill.“Our main goal obviously is workforce development, but I hope they get a sense of confidence and empowerment that they can do any job once they leave here,” said Lauren Shutler, the organization’s outreach coordinator.The repaired bicycles are then resold during Saturday sales, which have grown increasingly popular during the pandemic’s global bicycle shortage.“Our general sales are up 60%,” Jackson said. “Our bicycle sales are up 330% over last year.”The money from the sales then goes back into the nonprofit, though they say there’s always room for more.“As a nonprofit, we need people to come in and support us in that way,” Shutler said.It’s all part of the program to keep these wheels, and lives, in motion.“We've got them,” Jackson said.For more information on Gearin’ Up Bicycles and how you can help, click here. 2135

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has become the latest world leader to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden on his election victory, saying she offered to share her nation’s expertise on dealing the coronavirus. The country of 5 million people has only reported about 2,000 cases of the virus and has only seen five deaths.Ardern was re-elected last month, largely on the back of her administration's successful response.Ardern said the tone of the 20-minute phone call Monday was warm and that Biden spoke very favorably about how New Zealand was handling the pandemic. Ardern said the two also discussed trade issues and climate change, and talked about Biden’s Irish heritage and his fond memories of visiting New Zealand a few years ago. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Despite a late-night tweet in which President Donald Trump attacked Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and called on him to declare a special session in the hopes of overturning election results in the state, Georgia's Elecoral College vote went off without a hitch on Monday and the state awarded all 16 of its votes to president-elect Joe Biden.In a tweet early Monday morning, Trump called Kemp both a "fool" and a "clown," Trump wrote that his supporters should demand the governor “call a Special Session and open up signature verification, NOW.”Without proof, Trump claimed that if the state legislator doesn’t call a special session in an attempt to appoint new Electoral College voters in his favor, it could negatively affect the GOP’s chances of holding on to their two U.S. Senate seats in Georgia’s runoff elections.“Otherwise, could be a bad day for two GREAT Senators on January 5th,” wrote Trump.Georgia’s two Senate seats will determine which party controls the chamber come next year. Democrats would need to win both seat to take control back.Despite the threats, Georgia convened its noon ET Electoral College vote and granted all 16 votes to Biden. That vote was held without incident or interruption.However, while Georgia electors were casting their ballots, Republican electors held their own vote in a separate room of the Capitol, according to the Washington Post and WSB-TV, wrongly claiming that the election has yet to be decided. That vote is inconsequential and will have no legal bearing.The next big date in the 2020 election will be Jan. 6, when the House and Senate will hold a joint session to count the electoral votes. Biden will then be sworn in on Jan. 20, Inauguration Day.Trump’s tweet is only the latest in the ongoing feud between him and the governor. The Washington Post detailed the feud in an article Monday that says Trump is “furious with Kemp for not heeding his calls to question the integrity of the state’s election results." Since the election, The Post reports Trump has berated Kemp on phone calls and said the governor was losing all his popularity for not fully supporting him.Last week, Georgia recertified President-elect Joe Biden won the state after multiple recounts showed the Democrat defeated Trump by more than 11,000 votes.
