JUPITER, Florida —  It's now a sprawling sex trafficking investigation involving many jurisdictions and ensnaring wealthy, powerful suspects, but it began with a health inspector observing curious details suggesting women might be living at a Jupiter, Florida, day spa.Since at least July, after a state Health Department employee alerted police to signs of human trafficking, authorities had suspected Orchids of Asia Day Spa was providing more than massages and facials. Their suspicions were buttressed by a preliminary investigation that uncovered a seemingly all-male clientele and internet postings describing the spa as a "rub and tug," according to a police affidavit.Police requested the Florida Department of Health conduct a "routine inspection," and the department sent one of its inspectors there November 14. She reported back that the spa housed two rooms with beds, sheets and pillows, the affidavit said. There were also dressers containing medicine and clothing, as well as a fridge with food and condiments, it said.The findings, police and the health department determined, were "consistent with individuals living inside," the affidavit said.Taking a closer lookThis led a Jupiter detective to ramp up the investigation. Investigators pulled bags from a Dumpster and found a ripped-up ledger, credit card receipts and napkins wet with semen, the affidavit said.Police staked out the business, watching man after man enter the spa and leave after 30 minutes or an hour, the affidavit said. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard announced Thursday that, at sundown, they would be suspending the active search for two firefighters who never returned home after a boating trip off the Florida coast.Officials say Brian McCluney and Justin Walker were last seen leaving a Port Canaveral boat ramp on Friday morning in a 24-foot center console. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the two men were heading toward 8A Reef, a popular fishing spot. On Monday, crews found a tackle bag belonging to one of the men about 50 miles off the coast of St. Augustine. That bag is the only piece of debris located that belongs to the men during the search. And while a new furry best friend is a popular holiday gift, there's a word of caution about the hidden risk of getting a puppy from a pet store. Questions are being raised after the Humane Society released undercover video they shot at the Petland store near Summerlin, Nevada. The Humane Society had members of their organization get jobs there and at a store in Kennesaw, Georgia to document conditions they've been trying to expose for years. The video was shot in November at Petland in the Boca Park shopping center. The Humane Society claims the store is just waiting for the Maltese puppy in the video to die, and that people need to know the truth about those doggies in the window. "Since 2006, we received over 1,200 complaints from consumers who have purchased sick and sometimes dying puppies from Petland," says Humane Society Western Region Director Heather Carpenter. The animal welfare organization offers this video as proof that there's a problem when pets are sold for profit. But Boca Park Petland store owner Jeff Fausett says not so fast."My reaction is it's a total fabrication of the events," Fausett says.He says the Humane Society is trying to make it look like Petland was warehousing a dog until it died. "That's never happened here. That's not what we're about," he says. There are a few simple facts he wants to make clear."This was not a dog that, one, was in our kennel for weeks," Fausett says. "It was at the vet for weeks. It had a birth defect and it went back. It wasn't going to die."According to Fausett, after Petland sent the puppy out for medical care due to a respiratory infection, the veterinarian discovered the dog's air passage was too narrow.
