(KGTV) - Trains passing through southern Orange County were delayed Monday night causing headaches for thousands of travelers.According to Amtrak, a train became stalled on the track between Oceanside and San Clemente “due to mechanical issues.”The Metrolink Twitter account said train 609 that was disabled.The Pacific Surfliner Twitter account said train 583 was also having mechanical issues. The delays resulted in the cancellation of train 590.Metrolink wrote on Twitter that they canceled OC Line 603 to LA Union Station Tuesday morning because of the issues with train 609.Metrolink offered busses from Laguna Niguel down to Oceanside, but one traveler who was stranded at the San Juan Capistrano station told 10News that Amtrak did not offer any busses to complete the trip. ORANGE COUNTY, California — A man who reportedly sent an email that warned “this place will burn down” was arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Holy Fire in the Orange County area.The Orange County Register reported 51-year-old Forrest Gordon Clark was arrested by sheriff’s deputies, and U.S. Forest Service officials confirmed Clark was booked into Orange County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of felony arson, one count of felony threat to terrorize and one count of misdemeanor resisting arrest.Clark is being held on million bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.A volunteer fire chief told the Orange County Register that Clark sent him threatening emails last week, including one with the “this place will burn down” statement.In the Register’s report, the volunteer fire chief said that “Clark ran through the community screaming last week and sent an email predicting "Holy Jim, with roots to the Reconstruction Era, would burn.”According to the Register, Clark owns a cabin located in the Holy Fire’s burn area. (KGTV) — Oceanside Police are investigating the discovery of a body near Capistrano Park Saturday.Police received a call about a body in a river bed near the park at about 1:30 p.m.The body was discovered, but was severely decomposed, police said.It's not known if the victim died of natural causes or if this is a homicide case, police added. 369

OJAI, Calif. (KGTV) - As many as 700 wild rats, along with dogs, rabbits, a parrot and a cat were found living in an Ojai home at the center of an elder abuse investigation, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday. Deputies were first alerted to the situation on Mar. 13, when they responded to a “check-the-wellbeing” call initiated by Ventura County Adult Protective Services. APS officials suspected Catherine Vandermaesen of not properly caring for her 96-year-old father, who lived at the home with Vandermaesen and her 74-year-old sister. Deputies who went to the family’s home said the smell of ammonia and urine was detectable 20 feet away from the house. Vandermaesen, they said, refused to let them into the home. A task force of Ojai deputies and detectives said Vandermaesen allowed her father and the animals to remain in conditions not fit for living. Vandermaesen’s father was taken to the hospital and is now under the care of Ventura County Adult Protection Services. Vandermaesen’s sister was also treated at the hospital for unknown reasons and gained temporary housing. Animal Control officials impounded the animals, including 55 rats, but estimated as many as 700 more rats were still loose in the two-bedroom home. Ojai Code Enforcement officials yellow-tagged the residence as a danger to occupants. Vandermaesen was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor failure to care for animals. 1446

Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes.An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said.It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone.While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May.
