BALTIMORE, M.D. - Some voters may be riding in style when they cast their vote on Election Day, courtesy of local funeral homes who offering up their limousines."The focus is on the seniors but will still provide for those who call," said Dr. Henri P. Close II. "We know it's fancy and that's why we're doing it be the real issue is to get you out there to vote."Dr. Close owns Henri P. Close Funeral Service in Baltimore and is also the president of The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association."Funeral directors have always been the quiet ones in the background," said Dr. Close. "We were always the Underground Railroad. Our limousines and our cars were always used, even when you go back to Selma when you go back to Montgomery. The funeral directors always provided transportation because people didn’t have that mode of transportation. The funeral home always had that mode of transportation."Close said the goal of NFDMA is to offer free rides to 300,000 registered voters in Baltimore, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Kansas City."Some people are using their Mercedes," said Close. "Some people are using their sedans; some are using sprinters. Even though it might be huge it’s a limited number of people we're transporting at a time."According to the organization, the initiative has helped Baltimoreans get to the polls for 25 years, with ridership peaking on election days in 2008 and 2012.Talking with WMAR, Dr. Close emphasized that transportation is more crucial this year as people attempt to vote safely during the pandemic."There are fewer polling places," he said. "so there is a need for transportation. Now we're the above-ground railroad to get people to the polls, no matter where they stand on issues."Because of COVID-19, the vehicles will be sanitized before and after voters get in. Face masks are required for both drivers and passengers. BONITA (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Bonita say their street is becoming congested with "toll dodgers" - drivers who are going out of their way to avoid paying the .55 toll on State Route 125.   It's not just the traffic buildup that neighbors find concerning, it's that these drivers are often speeding - right past an elementary school, parks and horse tracks. In a community meeting Tuesday, the City shared plans to fix the issues on Briarwood and San Miguel Ranch roads. RELATED: Drivers dodging tolls on SR 125 cause problems in South Bay neighborhood"There's a lot of concern about people trying to evade the tolls," said Greg  Cox, with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. As a result, Cox said the City lowered the speed limit on San Miguel Road to 25 mph and placed a stop sign at a popular horse crossing. They also plan to intall a traffic signal at Sunnyside Elementary School. "If the County can secure a grant for the funding, that could be done within the next year," Cox said. John Scott has been in the neighborhood since the mid 1980s. He's noticed the buildup up of traffic over time, and says...he can't fault the drivers for trying to save a buck. "They got as much right to use the road as anybody else has to use the road," he said.  1327

Beginning in late October, Marriott International Inc., says they will lay off over 600 employees at its headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.In an email to E.W. Scripps, a spokesman for the hotel chain said 673 employees would be laid off.The spokesman added that employees that were furloughed would be back at the end of September.In 2018, Marriott began construction on its new headquarters and hoped to relocate by early 2022, the company said in a press release.The company currently has over 3,500 employees working at its headquarters.According to the Baltimore Sun, the old building will be turned into a senior living center after Erickson Living bought it. 673

BALTIMORE, Maryland — In the early hours of Jan. 19, 2015, the 15-foot Christmas tree proudly displayed in the Great Room of a large Annapolis, Maryland mansion caught fire.It spread through the home killing Sher Grogg's brother, sister-in-law, and their four young grandchildren.“They just didn’t have enough time to do anything, and it was under three minutes and everything was gone,” Grogg said.It's painful for her to talk about, even more distressing to see rooms engulfed in flames, but as an advocate for Common Voices, a coalition whose mission is a fire safe America, she witnesses fire demonstrations.“Oh, it’s horrible. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg.This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers.The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. Sprinklers decrease the risk of dying in a house fire by 80 percent.Grogg also wants to remind people with this upcoming holiday season to water your tree every day, get rid of it right after the holiday, and unplug your tree every night.National Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 13.
