NEW YORK CITY — An illegal party on a New York City cruise ship was shut down early Sunday morning, city sheriff's deputies said.The Liberty Belle, which is operated by Empire Cruises, was spotted on Saturday departing from Pier 36 in Manhattan with dozens of people aboard, according to officials and photos of the boat.The person who posted the photo on Twitter said it appeared no one was wearing masks or social distancing.Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said her office would contact city and state agencies regarding the incident.The Sheriff's Office later said its deputies intercepted the owners and captain of the ship and arrested them for operating an illegal party in violation of social distancing provisions in the city and state emergency executive orders as well as other charges.A request for comment from Empire Cruises was not immediately returned.The company stopped operations in March because of the COVID-19 outbreak and a city emergency executive order, according to its website.This story was originally published by Lauren Cook on WPIX in New York City. 1095

NORFOLK, Va. - An Old Dominion University student wants to see more African-American Physicists.She and others are making efforts to make this a reality and they are looking for mentors in the Hampton Roads community.“I love Accelerated Physics,” Kat Watkins, a junior at ODU said. She is passionate about physics and has been since childhood.She recently started the group Society of Black Physicists at ODU.The American Institute of Physics found that fewer than four percent of bachelor’s degrees went to black students for Physics and there's a nationwide effort to change this and to increase the number of African American Physicists.“Knowing all of this, hearing these numbers and being in a very small population of people, it's very hard to find the representation,” said Watkins.With the support of her adviser Dr. Matthew Nerem, an ODU Professor, and other students, she created the organization.“To provide a place for a person of color to feel home, you may be the only one in your class, you may be the only one that you see, but your experience is not singular, you're not alone. So that's why I started S.B.P.,” said Watkins.Physics student Jade Hooper is also part of the group. “Right now, I'm pretty much, if not in all of my classes, most of them, not just the only black female, but the only black person in the classroom and so from that standpoint, it kind of puts me in a position where sometimes I don't feel comfortable,” said Hooper, “My colleagues who are not the minority, they never have to go into a classroom or a building and wonder am I going to be the only white person in the classroom.”“If we want to have a proper representation, based on the population size, we need to bring up the number of Ph.D... by like almost eight times,” said Dr. Nerem.Watkins said her group is looking for mentors throughout the Hampton Roads region to help the students. She said the students also are looking at ways to reach children in hopes of getting kids interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.“We really just want to spread our roots out into the community,” said Watkins, “We want to inspire little ones. We want to inspire young minds too.”“It’s very important that these teens and the students can see a representation, somebody like me and Kat who will make it in this field so that they have somebody to look up to,” said Hooper.“Studying physics just gives people the opportunity to try and explore the universe, what we're composed of,” said Dr. Nerem.You don't have to be African American to join the group or mentor, you just need to support their mission: "The mission of the Society of Black Physicists is to promote the professional development and well-being of ethnic minority STEM students within the international scientific community and within society at large. SBP seeks to develop and support efforts to increase opportunities for ethnic minorities and People of Color in physics and to increase their numbers and visibility of their scientific work. It also seeks to develop activities and programs that highlight and enhance the benefits of the scientific contributions that People of Color provide for the international community."“I would love to come back in 20 years to ODU and walk into the mathematical methods of physics class and see half of the class be people of color, that will be incredible. New security measures were enforced as students of Santa Fe High School in Texas returned for the new school year Monday.The security changes come after a student opened fire on May 18, killing 10 students.The most noticeable security addition: metal detectors. Other renovations at the high school include the installation of bullet-proof glass, a secure entrance vestibule and even panic buttons in the classrooms. Interior doors were upgraded to lock from the inside and outside and 500 security cameras were installed district wide. Additionally, the school hired extra police offers, five of which will work fulltime.“Well, it's a very typical reaction from what we’ve seen in a lot of schools in the wake of spring of ’18,” says Amy Klinger.Klinger, a school safety expert with The Educator’s School Safety Network, says on one hand she’s glad to see more schools like Santa Fe investing in new measures, but she cautions money also needs to be spent on the teachers, too.“Are we combining buying stuff with actually training people?” asks Klinger. “Probably a single point of entry is a good idea, but not if you haven't provided people with training on how to screen visitors who are coming in.”Since teachers themselves are the first line of defense, The Educators School Safety Network is urging all schools to consider training faculty to better recognize out of ordinary behavior.“We know that anywhere between 80 to 85 percent of all perpetrators are students in that school, so who is working with those students? Educators,” says Klinger. “So, we need to invest in those people that see those kids every single day and to give them tools and resources and training to be able to pick up on students who are at risk.” 1739

Nitro is coming to a Starbucks near you.Every company-operated US Starbucks location will offer the nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee, which comes out of a tap, by the end of next year to meet customer demand, the company said on Thursday.The expansion is part of Starbucks' plan to sell more products next year — especially as Frappucino sales slip.Frappuccinos used to help drive sales for Starbucks. But in recent years, increasingly health-conscious customers have turned on the sugary blended beverages.Cold drinks like iced espresso, cold brew and Refresher juice drinks have driven more than 80% of Starbucks' beverage growth over the last two years, said Roz Brewer, chief operating officer for Starbucks, during the company's investor day presentation."As you know, our primary softness has been centered around Frappuccino," Brewer said on Thursday.Frappuccino drinkers tend to treat the drink as a one-off purchase, she noted. But customers are more loyal to cold brews and iced coffees. "These categories are more habitual and create more brand affinity," she said.The company is not moving away from Frappuccinos, Brewer noted. Starbucks is just offering new options for the blended drinks and expanding its cold drink portfolio.Starbucks started selling Nitro in its Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle. The brew was such a hit that Starbucks expanded it to 500 Starbucks stores later that year.Right now, 2,500 out of 8,500 US company-operated stores serve Nitro cold brew. The expansion is "pretty substantial for us," Brewer told CNN Business.Nitro-serving taps will be added to all Starbucks stores, Brewer added.
