BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday pledged to work with Bosnia and Herzegovina to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two nations."We should work together to achieve this goal based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," Wen said during his talks with Nikola Spiric, chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Hailing the traditional friendship between the two nations, Wen said China respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and respects its peoples's choice of their development path.Wen hoped the western Balkan region would achieve lasting peace and stability.Wen said trade and economic cooperation between the two countries has good prospects. SHANGHAI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines resumed some flights to Europe Wednesday, a week after ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland halted air travel.China Eastern resumed services between Shanghai and some European cities including Moscow, Frankfurt and Paris.The airline had canceled 17 flights bound for London, Moscow, Frankfurt and Paris from April 15 to 20, affecting about 8,000 passengers.The carrier said it used bigger Airbus A346 and A343 models to transport as many stranded passengers as possible.German airline Lufthansa resumed flights from Shanghai to Frankfurt late Tuesday. Other European carriers, including Air France, Virgin Atlantic, KLM and Aeroflot, resumed services between Shanghai and Europe Wednesday. Finnair would resume services Thursday, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.Europe's air traffic slowly began to return to normal Tuesday with almost half of all scheduled flights taking to the skies, but officials warned it could take weeks to clear the backlog of millions of passengers stranded since the volcano erupted April 14.

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- A draft regulation on the protection of water resources and ecological environment of the Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, was made public Wednesday to solicit opinions.According to the draft posted on the website of the State Council's Legislative Affairs Office, www.chinalaw.gov.cn, local authorities must readjust their economic structure and eliminate outdated industries with high water consumption and pollution.Recycled paper-making companies with a yearly output of less than 50,000 tonnes, as well as other pollutant-discharging companies with backward production capacities, and those do not operate in accordance with national industrial policies or meet discharge standards, could no longer operate near the Taihu Lake, the draft said.Taihu has been plagued by algae due to severe industrial pollution in recent years. In 2007, an algae outbreak forced local water plants to stop household water supplies in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province.The draft said local government would set discharge limits and annual pollution reduction plans for all polluters near the lake.Establishment of new chemical and pharmaceutical enterprises and projects, sewage outlets, garbage recycling facilities, golf courses, floating restaurants, poultry and livestock farms should not be allowed near the lake, the draft regulation said.It also banned storage and transportation of toxic materials, and the sales and use of laundry detergent containing phosphorus near the Lake, and demanded limited use of fertilizer and pesticide.Those who violate the draft regulation would face administrative punishment, in addition to fines ranging from 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) to 500,000 yuan or one to three times of the money involved in their illegal activities, and would have to pay for government efforts to undo the damages they have caused, the draft said.The public is invited to comment on the draft regulation any time before June 30 via online postings, email or letters.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A leading Chinese government think tank Thursday forecast the country's 2010 economic growth would top the 8-percent target set by the central government by almost 2 percentage points.The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) forecast China's gross domestic product (GDP) would expand by 9.9 percent this year, 1.2 percentage points higher than last year's growth rate.Its forecast is higher than the 9.6-percent economic growth predicted by the Asian Development Bank earlier this month.Fixed assets investment would rise 33.3 percent year on year in 2010, said a blue book on China's 2010 economic prospects jointly released by the CASS and the Social Sciences Academic Press.The CASS said a slim chance existed of serious inflation in China this year with the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, growing within a moderate range.The book also said the government should make economic policies more flexible and better targeted over the rest of the year, while mapping out plans to withdraw stimulus measures gradually within the next two years without jeopardizing economic growth.China's GDP grew 11.9 percent year on year in the first quarter to 8.06 trillion yuan (1.19 trillion U.S. dollars) and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent to 3.53 trillion yuan during the same period.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, below the government target limit of 3 percent.

The number of species in China ranks the first among countries of the Northern Hemisphere, statistics show.Li said biodiversity is very important for improving farming, technological innovation, and promoting development.Li said the system of ecological protection and the management of natural reserves should be improved so the country's unique and endangered species are better protected."Efforts should be made to prevent blind- and over- exploitation, and the impact of exploitation on biodiversity should be reduced to a minimum," Li said.He said most Chinese regions rich in biodiversity are located in the west and are underdeveloped. Li called for both ecological protection and improvement in livelihoods in these regions."The protection of biodiversity is a common environmental problem faced by the international community and a development issue concerning human progress," Li said.Biological-technology research and development should be strengthened and international cooperation should be deepened, Li added.Tuesday's meeting also deliberated documents concerning China's protection of biodiversity.
