The National Basketball Association is reportedly targeting to start the 2020-21 season sometime in December, according to the Associated Press and ESPN.The Associated Press reported that the league is eyeing to start the new season back up on Dec. 22 and teams playing 70 games.According to ESPN, the board of governors met Friday and discussed potentially starting the upcoming season on Christmas Day to take advantage of that "historically prime NBA showcase" and play fewer than 82 games. If the NBA does decide to begin playing near the end of December, that means training camps would start near the end of November, the AP reported. The 2019-20 season ended on Oct. 11 when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat for the NBA Championship. And was last season was one for the ages: the season was suspended back in March after a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the virus before playing the Oklahoma City Thunder. The season resumed in July in a bubble-like atmosphere at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. Players boycotted in the middle of the playoffs in Florida, and games were postponed, which led to other leagues around the sports world to boycott games in the wake of a police shooting in Wisconsin. The league officially announced Thursday that its upcoming draft would be virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league will conduct the draft at ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, on Nov. 18.NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum will announce the selections live. 1541

The Louisville police detective that Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said appeared to have fired the fatal shot at Breonna Taylor back in March is reportedly seeking ,000 through an online fundraiser so he can retire.According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Det. Myles Cosgrove, one of three Louisville police officers who shot into Taylor's apartment, is seeking funds on the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo.Cosgrove's attorney, Jarrod Beck, confirmed to CNN that Cosgrove's family members set up the page.According to the fundraiser's description, the page was set up to ensure Cosgrove can "purchase the remainder of his service time so that he can retire.""Myles’ reputation has been completely dismantled and the psychological trauma is something that he will have to cope with for the rest of his life," the fundraiser description reads. "Every day, the threats seem more legitimate and scarier; his family has been doxed and harassed, while the threats remain unrelenting. Although Myles may never feel completely safe again, if you can help us reach our goal, we can at least get him on a path to security and allow him to focus on his main objective: the safety of his family."The fundraiser's goal was set to ,000 and, as of Thursday afternoon, had raised over ,000.A grand jury announced Monday that Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly were "justified" in using lethal force because they were fired upon first. 1444

The government’s leading infectious disease expert told CNN on Thursday that the NFL will need to take significant steps in order to conduct a season this fall.During an interview with CNN, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the NFL will need to consider playing games in a “bubble,” much like how the NBA and MLS plan on resuming their seasons later this summer."Unless players are essentially in a bubble -- insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day -- it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall," Dr. Fauci told CNN. "If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year."Dr. Fauci's comments come as several states, including Arizona and Florida have seen a jump in coronavirus cases. As of now, the NFL continues to plan on playing games in home stadiums. But decisions on moving forward will need to be made in the coming weeks, with training camp starting in a month, and preseason games in August.NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills told the NFL Network that placing NFL players in a “bubble” was not realistic. The number of players and coaches employed by the NFL is considerably higher than the MLS and NBA."Dr. Fauci has identified the important health and safety issues we and the NFL Players Association, together with our joint medical advisors, are addressing to mitigate the health risk to players, coaches and other essential personnel," Sills said in a statement to the NFL Network."We are developing a comprehensive and rapid-result testing program and rigorous protocols that call for a shared responsibility from everyone inside our football ecosystem. This is based on the collective guidance of public health officials, including the White House task force, the CDC, infectious disease experts, and other sports leagues."Make no mistake, this is no easy task. We will make adjustments as necessary to meet the public health environment as we prepare to play the 2020 season as scheduled with increased protocols and safety measures for all players, personnel and attendees. We will be flexible and adaptable in this environment to adjust to the virus as needed." 2249
