SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy. The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. She also founded and runs the Dove Self-Esteem project at High Tech Middle. The hours Richards has dedicated to the cause pales in comparison to the contributions of wounded veterans, according to the teen, who says "When I am tired or feeling lazy, I remember what they sacrificed, and they never complain."In addition to her accomplishments, Richards has worked with the Freedom Station and USO San Diego and maintained a 4.0 GPA. She's also an avid dancer. 1095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A cheating scandal on a California State Board of Pharmacy exam has left 1,400 recent graduates unlicensed and unable to work, forcing some to deny job offers as their student loans become due.The board announced this week it invalidated all test scores on the California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination for Pharmacists (CPJE) administered since July after it found evidence of "wide-scale subversion" of the exam.Board investigators determined more than 100 test questions were shared online. The CPJE is a critical step in the licensure process for new pharmacists."The board sincerely regrets that the actions of some are negatively impacting the lives of many," the board wrote in a statement posted Wednesday. "California consumers must have confidence that individuals passing a licensing exam have the requisite knowledge and skills to practice safely and competently."Some graduates working as interns in pharmacies while waiting for their license said they had lost their jobs over the licensing delay. Others said they had to turn down job offers."Our loans are increasing, we are all financially burdened as we can't find jobs until we take this exam," one test-taker wrote in an email to 10News. "People are very frustrated in the lack of communication from the board. We are being punished over other people's mistakes. We don't deserve this."The board is offering pharmacist applicants a chance to retake the test on November 16 and 17, and said it would "work diligently to expedite the results." That means applicants likely wouldn't be licensed and ready to work until December, leaving some who expected to begin working by late August in a financially stressful situation."Most people study for this exam for one to two months," said another test-taker. "The prospect of taking it again is daunting." 1864

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Celebrity Cruise Line ship docked at the Port of San Diego Monday, pulling into the Embarcadero just before sunrise. More than 1,500 passengers were on board the "Eclipse," including Mali Lev-Ram and her husband. The couple started the cruise on March 1 in Buenos Aires. They were supposed to get off in Chile March 15, but the cruise was turned away because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. "It was frustrating, but everyone I have to say was very patient, we trusted that the crew are doing their best to do everything they can for us," said Lev-Ram.RELATED: San Diego issues health orders on cruise ships amid COVID-19San Diego County health officials said no one on board had shown symptoms of the virus, but precautions are being taken. Customs officers boarded the ship wearing masks. All passengers will go through a medical screening before going home to self-quarantine for fourteen days."We are very happy. My husband was so emotional to see San Diego, we were a little crying even, we were very happy," said Lev-Ram. 1063

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo and Zoo Safari Park combined for a record attendance of more than 5.5 million visitors in 2018, it was announced today.More than 4 million people visited the zoo in 2018 and over 1.5 million visited the Safari Park. It was the first year in the zoo's 100-year history in which attendance surpassed 4 million, according to zoo officials, who believe the appeal of new exhibits such as Walkabout Australia and Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks contributed significantly to the record-setting year."We are delighted to have been able to host more than four million people at the zoo, and I know that a lot of this is due to the wonderful new guest areas and the commitment to guest service shown by our employees every day," said San Diego Zoo Director Dwight Scott. "It has been a pleasure to share our love of wildlife with so many people this year -- and we know that this high attendance will help to fund additional conservation work in the future."Zoo officials also touted the year's conservation efforts of San Diego Zoo Global, the nonprofit that runs the zoo and the Safari Park. The organization was able to continue increasing its work conserving and protecting at-risk species all over the world due, in part, to the record attendance numbers."This attendance record shows us that people care about wildlife, and care about saving species," said Douglas G. Myers, president and CEO of San Diego Zoo Global. "This last year, we increased communications about the need to save species and ran advertising asking people to support our efforts by coming to the zoo and the Safari Park. More than five and a half million people responded by visiting us in 2018 -- imagine what we can do to save species next year!" 1757

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A clerical error means the San Diego Unified School District will not have federal funding available for its homeless students in the coming years.Local investigative news group inewsource reported the district will likely lose out on up to 0,000 in funds due to a missing signature on its application for the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program.California Department of Education spokesperson Scott Roark confirmed with 10News that the SDUSD submitted an application that was “disqualified and was not read” because of the missing required signature. 605
