SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old documented gang member was convicted Wednesday of murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of a career Navy man and the wounding of his cousin outside a comedy club at Horton Plaza.Jurors deliberated for nearly two days before finding Arrow Morris guilty of the two felony charges, in addition to sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm and three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in connection with three guns investigators found during a search of his girlfriend's home.Morris, who is scheduled to be sentenced May 20, faces more than 80 years to life in prison for the killing of 43-year-old James Celani, who was struck in the head, neck and chest. His cousin was grazed in the leg.Deputy District Attorney Amy Maund said that on the night of June 10, 2017, following a violent confrontation with his girlfriend, Morris and his brother walked away from the club and encountered Celani and his cousin, who were walking past them in the opposite direction.Maund told jurors that either Celani or his cousin said "What's up?" to the Morris brothers as they walked past, to which Morris replied "Don't (expletive) talk to me," then began firing.The prosecutor said Morris, still in a rage over the confrontation with his girlfriend, took his anger out on Celani and his cousin, some of the first people he came across after leaving the club.The shooting happened to "a truly innocent, vulnerable victim," Maund said, "and it could have been anyone."Maund said several witnesses pointed to the shooter as a man wearing a red shirt, red hat and white jacket, which Morris can be seen wearing in surveillance footage from Horton Plaza and a 7-Eleven convenience store.Defense attorney Steward Dadmun contended that witnesses mistook his client for his brother, who, according to Dadmun, was the actual shooter. The whereabouts of Morris' brother was unclear."None of these witnesses passes the reasonable doubt test, not a single one of them," Dadmun told the jury.According to Dadmun, Morris had "no idea" his sibling was going to begin shooting, while Maund maintained that the altercation with his girlfriend left Morris enraged and prone to violence."The defendant was angry, the defendant had a gun and he wasn't backing down," the prosecutor said.Morris was arrested two days after the shooting during a traffic stop in Serra Mesa. 2411

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder following a SWAT standoff after a shooting in the City Heights area that sent two people to the hospital, police said.The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Rowan Street at 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department.When officers arrived on scene, they found a 21-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to his head, Brown said. The victim directed officers to his companion, who was seated in a nearby car and also appeared to have been shot.The officers provided aid to the victims, who were later taken to a hospital, Brown said. The man who called for help is expected to survive his injuries, but the other victim was not expected to survive.Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. ``While the investigation has just begun, detectives have learned that the two men arrived in San Diego from Central California to meet with a male at 1700 Rowan Street,'' Brown said. ``It is believed the men were meeting to conduct a marijuana transaction. The suspect shot both victims and fled to a nearby residence.''A SWAT team and emergency negotiators arrived and attempted to talk the suspect into surrendering peacefully, the lieutenant said. After 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Matatoa Samoata, 20, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of two felony counts of attempted murder and one count of grand theft, according to jail records. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former member of the U.S. national wrestling team, who was severely injured during a training camp exercise held at Camp Pendleton, has filed a lawsuit alleging the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling encouraged him and other civilians to take part in a military-style exercise involving weapons that the participants weren't adequately trained to use.Richard Perry and his wife Gina Cimmino filed the lawsuit Tuesday in San Diego federal court against the United States and Armament Systems and Procedures Inc., a company that manufactured and sold a padded baton used in the exercise that resulted in Perry's injury on Aug. 27, 2018.Perry and another civilian attendee of the training camp were provided batons and helmets with facemasks and given "instruction to strike, thrust and jab at the opponent's head and face to score a `kill shot,"' according to the complaint.As Perry's training partner jabbed with the baton, the weapon passed through a gap in Perry's facemask and shattered his eye socket and skull, pushing shattered bone fragments into his brain, the suit alleges.The injury nearly killed him and left him with multiple traumatic brain injuries, skull fractures and "permanent, disfiguring, disabling injuries" which "will require extensive future medical care, vocational rehabilitation, and life care for the rest of his life," according to his court papers.Perry and the other wrestlers were invited to Camp Pendleton as part of a joint event held by USA Wrestling and the Marine Corps that was partly intended as a Marine Corps recruitment initiative, according to the suit.Perry's attorneys allege National Team members were required to attend the camp, as non-attendance resulted in "adverse consequences, including losing a monetary stipend they otherwise earn as National Team members."The lawsuit alleges the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling "placed Richard Perry and other civilian Camp attendees into a `fight club'-style full- speed, full-contact military weapons training exercise," and that Marine Corps and USA Wrestling members "recklessly encouraged head shots and baton jabs by the inexperienced participants" during the exercise in which Perry was injured.The helmets provided to Perry and other wrestlers were "grossly unsuitable for the baton striking drills and posed a clear risk of serious injury," according to the suit. The plaintiff also alleges the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling failed to inspect or maintain the equipment used during the exercise and the batons were "dangerously unprotected," with the padding only held in place by duct tape.Robert J. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego was the site of the first big outbreak at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s 221 detention centers. The origins of the outbreak are uncertain, but in interviews with The Associated Press, workers and detainees reveal shortcomings in how the private company that manages the center handled the disease: There was an early absence of facial coverings, and a lack of cleaning supplies. Symptomatic detainees were mixed with others. Some workers at the center quit; the Mexican consul general, responding to complaints from detainees, raised concerns about how the facility handled the outbreak.One guard at the facility told the Associated Press employees were discouraged from wearing masks because it would frighten detainees and make them think they were sick.According to ICE, there have been 168 detainees at Otay Mesa that have tested positive since the start of the outbreak. Cities across the U.S. still may be trying to deck the halls, but a COVID-19 Christmas just looks and feels different.For people of faith, a season full of worship and togetherness will be missed."They do feel isolated," said GlenRoy Watson, a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Watson’s congregation is made up of about 100 families."Normally at Christmas, we'd eat dinner and hang out and have a Christmas presentation," he said.This year, religious celebrations need to be held at home, but he had an idea."I'm just hoping that everyone will learn a little bit more about each one another and just continue to feel united," Watson said.He asked all families in his congregation to make a home video about their traditions or fond holiday memories to share with each other."It will be kind of like a mini movie," he said."For our Christmas tradition we read the story of Jesus Christ," congregation member Denise Cordero said as she sat with her young daughter by their Christmas tree and spoke to her iPhone camera.For church piano player VerLynn Brink, playing Christmas hymns for everyone at her church is what she will miss most."This is one of my favorite memories of Christmas," she said as she recorded a video on her phone while playing her piano.
