SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More rolling power outages are expected across San Diego as an intense heatwave bakes the county.SDG&E warned Monday that more rotating outages are likely across the region for the next few days."We certainly understand it's a pandemic and everyone is at home right now. We're working from home and schooling from home, and we totally get that, but everything we can possibly do to conserve any ounce of energy is going to help the collective right now," said Denice Menard communications manager for SDG&E.The California Independent System Operator runs the majority of the state's grid. The non-profit says the outages are necessary due to increased demand from the scorching temperatures, but some industry experts disagree."Asleep at the wheel might be a thought that comes to mind," said Bill Powers, Principal of Powers Engineering. Powers has worked on electrical systems for decades, and he's also testified as an expert on energy matters.Powers said there was nothing unusual about the heat."Those of us that watch this on a daily basis knew that Friday was a hot day, but it wasn't an atypical hot day. There was nothing special about Friday's temperature or electrical demand in terms of what we are capable of handling," said Powers.The last time California had rolling blackouts was in 2001. Powers believes the outages have more to do with how the power is managed rather than how much is available."That's due to their whole format where they determine who has the cheapest power in this moment, and then we will let that operate.If you have some units that take awhile to come up to speed that are higher cost, the system doesn't really work that well for that," said Powers.California's governor also called the outages unacceptable and promised a swift investigation."If they start operating the grid with a little bit of practical wisdom, they're not going to be any more blackouts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect who reportedly stole a cello worth 0,000 from a Mission Valley hotel room.According to police, the incident happened on August 8 between 8 and 10 p.m. at the Town and Country hotel on the 500 block of Hotel Circle North.Police say the suspect forced their way into the hotel room, which was unoccupied at the time, and stole several items, including the rare, custom-made cello.The cello was made by Mario Miralles and has a label that reads “Mario Miralles 2010 Alta Dena California”. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly unsealed court documents reveal how investigators were able to identify the suspected Church's Chicken shooter.Albert Lee Blake, 49, was arrested weeks after the shooting erupted inside of the Otay Mesa West restaurant. Blake is accused of shooting three employees and killing Maribel Ibanez. The shooting happened after an argument stemming from Blake allegedly trying to use a fake 0 dollar bill to purchase food. A number of witnesses gave similar descriptions of the man seen shooting inside of the Church's Chicken. Witnesses reported the man coming back into the restaurant after the argument, standing in line, then shooting at employees. Police ran the license plate through their database and found a match. The same vehicle was connected to a stop in September and the driver then was Albert Blake. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One man is dead after a car hopped onto a sidewalk and ran over him.A vehicle traveling southbound near 3950 Normal St. in Hillcrest veered off the road and onto the sidewalk at about 11 p.m. Friday. In the process, the vehicle ran over a man sleeping on the sidewalk, killing him.Police said the vehicle continued through some bushes and into a parking lot, where it collided with a parked car. The vehicle fled the area traveling eastbound on University Ave.The vehicle was described as a silver Honda Accord. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking for some extra cash on hand during the coronavirus pandemic are turning to pawn shops as one way to make ends meet.Moris Adato, the owner of CashCo Pawn, says business for pawn loans started to pick up near the end of April when people needed extra money for mortgage and rent payments."It's getting crazy right now," Adato says.Pawn shop owners say their loans can help people make ends meet as they wait for things like EDD payments or stimulus checks or search for a new job.When someone pawns an item, the shop owner gives them a loan against the item's cash value. People typically have 4-6 months to pay it back, with interest. Once the loan is repaid, the item is returned to the owner.If someone can't, or chooses not to repay the loan, the item then belongs to the store and can be sold. There's no penalty for forfeiting the item, and it will not affect your credit score.Many stores, like Adato's, will allow people to extend their loans if they ask.Adato says his most common item is jewelry."Jewelry in itself is something to wear and to look good, but it's a commodity," he says. "It's gold, silver, or diamonds. If things go wrong, this is how you get out of trouble."Experts say there are a few things people need to know before deciding to pawn a possession.First, make sure the store you go to is accredited with a state or national pawnbrokers association. That will ensure they follow all the laws and regulations of the business.Second, ask about the terms of the loan, especially the interest. California law caps the interest on a pawn loan at 3% per month.Third, make sure you understand all of the extra costs, including storage and set up fees.Despite the spike in demand, Adato says about 90% of the people who come in for loans pay them back and reclaim their items.
