Dr. Michael Drake became the University of California's first Black president on Tuesday, the Board of Regents announced in a press release.Dr. Drake will replace Janet Napolitano when she steps down in August.“Dr. Drake personifies the qualities we looked for in selecting a new president: He is committed to seeing the whole student and to supporting all our students. He recognizes the incalculable value of faculty and staff to the University’s mission, and he understands the importance of the public and private partnerships that help us achieve that mission,” said John A. Pérez, chair of the UC Board of Regents in the release. “As the first person of color to serve as UC president, Dr. Drake returns to UC at an important point in the University’s journey. This is a homecoming the University of California is very excited to be celebrating early.”Drake will oversee 10 campuses, five medical centers, three nationally affiliated labs, more than 280,000 students, and 230,000 faculty and staff.Up until this past week, Drake was president at The Ohio State University beginning in 2014.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said in the press release. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead. Brenda and I are thrilled to be back. Fiat Lux!” 1564
During a press conference on Wednesday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said that he believes the police officers who shot Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor should be charged with crimes.Biden said that the cases should be handled within the judicial system, but said that the officers in the cases should face charges "at a minimum."Biden added that the person who shot a Trump supporter during a weekend confrontation in Portland, Oregon should also face charges. When asked by reporters how Biden would keep Americans safe in times of civil unrest, Biden said he wouldn't "incite violence" and would condemn it when occurred. He accused Trump of acting "irresponsibly" by not condemning violence amid protests."Protesting is a right and free speech is a right. But to engage in violence: Burning, looting, unrest in the name of protesting is wrong and people should be held accountable," Biden said.Biden added that he "didn't hear much" from Trump in regard to the shooting of Jacob Blake.Biden is scheduled to visit Kenosha tomorrow, where he says he will "meet with community leaders." Biden's visit will come two days after Trump visited the city — a visit that largely consisted of viewing damage caused by riots and meeting with law enforcement officials. Biden's comments came a day after Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, filed a .5 million lawsuit against the Louisville Metro Police Department in connection with the fatal shooting that stemmed from a "no-knock warrant." 1503

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The owners of the Cottonwood Golf Club in El Cajon have filed an application with the county to convert the property into a sand mine.Details were revealed at the Valle del Oro community planning group meeting earlier this month. The proposal calls for a three-phase mining operation over 10 years. The first phase would take place on the course west of the Steele Canyon bridge, which has already been closed to golfers.Sand is needed as a component of concrete, which has become scarcer during the construction boom of the past decade. The mine would produce a maximum of 570,000 tons a year, creating an estimated 170 heavy truck round trips a day from the site. The property is owned by Beverly Hills real estate agent Michael Schlesinger, who also owns the shuttered golf courses at Stoneridge Country Club and Escondido Country Club.10News reached out to EnviroMine, the consulting company involved in the plan. They said they would comment at a later date.Nearby residents have already created an opposition group called “Stop Cottonwood Sand Mine.”Barry Jantz is one of the organizers who argues a sand mine is not compatible with the neighborhood.“The character of the neighborhood would be impacted,” said Jantz.More specifically, he says they are worried about the noise and traffic from the trucks, as well as pollution, environmental impacts and the potential to decrease property values. They will be holding a meeting at the Rancho San Diego library on Wednesday, November 27 at 6 p.m. 1535
